2 The Composition The Composer Jeremy Woolstenhulme received his B.M.E. rom Brigham Young University in 000 and an M.A. in Perormance rom the University o Nevada (Las Vegas) in 005. Currently, Mr. Woolstenhulme serves as the orchestra director at Hyde Park Middle School in the Clark County School District. He has traveled with his orchestra to London, Washington, D.C., Boston, and New York. Mr. Woolstenhulme s orchestra was selected to play at the 008 Midwest Clinic in Chicago. He is also a contract musician with the Las Vegas Philharmonic, cellist or the Seasons String Quartet, and a reelance musician perorming at many venues located on the amed Las Vegas Strip. He lives with his beautiul wie Taryn and their two children, Cadence Belle and Coda Blake. The dierence between a iddle and a violin is best summarized in the ollowing adage: the violin sings and the iddle dances. YEE HAW! aims to make the iddle dance. It is a lively tune written or young players to experience the energetic style o olk music. Students can have un with double stops, slap bass, and inger slides to make the piece sound more authentic. The aster your orchestra can play it, the more un they ll have! Rehearsal Suggestions: Young students tend to use too much bow when playing in a iddle style. Try explaining that the aster we go, the smaller bows we should use. Have students work on minimal movement: tell them that the best iddlers look like they are playing eortlessly. As a un homework assignment, students can search the Internet or video o olk iddlers. For some good unison practice on the melody, it would be best to have everyone except basses start at m. 53. The tune is ound in dierent places in all o the sections except the basses, who play the role o the rhythm section. When slapping the bass strings beginning in m. 5, young players tend to lit their hands too high, causing them to be late. Also, liting the hand too ar rom the string can result in a harsh, over-balanced slap. Double stops can be hard at irst or the students to read. Explain that one o the notes is an open string and can be ignored while they concentrate on the ingered notes. I would practice some o the passages with just the ingered notes and later add the open strings. The last measure o the piece in the violins and viola is the only place that requires two ingered notes or the double stop, so some extra practice might be needed here. I tell the kids that tunnel ingers are essential or these double stops with open strings: i the ingers are not round enough, the open string will not vibrate well. Mm might be diicult to balance: the ocus here should be on the moving 8 th notes. Sustained backgrounds and o beat 8 th notes should be played soter than the other moving lines. The most important consideration or this iddle song, however, is that your orchestra has un with it there should be smiles on students aces when they re playing YEE HAW!
