1 Application Technique Using a Combination Sensor with the XM-360 Module This Application Technique describes how to wire and configure a sensor with combined temperature and acceleration measurement capability with the XM-360 Process module. Introduction The XM-360 can measure the temperature output portion of the Entek and Wilcoxon brand combination accelerometers/temperature sensors listed in Table 1. A key difference between the various models is how the integral temperature sensor is powered. In some models, the temperature sensor is powered by the externally provided constant current (IEPE) circuit. In other models, the sensor draws the requisite power from the accelerometer s power supply. Therefore care must be taken to ensure that the sensor is wired appropriately (per this technical note). Sensors that require constant current power for the temperature output can be wired in two ways. If the XM mA outputs are not otherwise being used, they can be wired and configured to provide the necessary constant current power. Figure 1 on page 3 illustrates this installation. In order for the 4-20mA output to source the correct current, the 4-20 output channel must be disabled. By disabling the 4-20 output channel, the output will drive ~3mA. If the 4-20mA outputs are being used, you must supply an external source of constant current. This is best accomplished by an external constant current diode in the range of 2mA to 4mA. A suitable part is Central Semiconductor CCL2700. The diode should be installed such that the anode is connected to +24V and the cathode (striped end) is connected to the channel input. See Figure 2 on page 4. Note that the illustration shows the diode connected to terminal 37, but any source of +24V will do. Sensors that do not require constant current for the temperature portion, such as Wilcoxon 786T and Entek models 9100AT and 9200AT, can be wired straight into the input channel. See Figure 3 on page 5. 1

If the sensor fails such that its output signal is outside its valid operating range, but still within the XM channel s input range (i.e. 0-5V), no fault would be detected by the XM-360. Only failure conditions that cause the signal to exceed the input range will be recognized as a fault. Example to the XM-360 This section provides the wiring diagrams discussed in the Introduction on page 1. The Wilcoxon models 793T and 797T require a constant current source to power the temperature sensor. Use either Example 1 or Example 2 to wire and configure your XM-360 module. The Wilcoxon 786T and Entek models 9100AT and 9200AT do not require a constant current for the temperature sensor. For these sensors, use Example 3 to wire and configure your XM-360. TIP The illustrations below show the wiring connections to Channel 1 on the XM-360. You may use any of the other channels as well. Refer to the XM-360 Process Module Users Guide for information. Example mA outputs to provide power The 4-20mA outputs of the XM-360 can be wired and configured to source the constant current supply for the temperature portion of the sensor. IMPORTANT Wire the 4-20mA outputs only if they are not being used for monitoring.

Then disable the 4-20mA Output Channel 1 (clear Enable parameter) using your configuration tool. This will source 3mA. Example 2 - an external IEPE diode to provide power If the 4-20mA outputs of the XM-360 are being used for monitoring, you must use an external source of constant current. 1. Wire the sensor and the external constant current diode to the XM-360 module as shown in Figure 2.

These sensors can be wired directly to the input channel. 1. Wire the sensor to the XM-360, as shown in Figure 3.
