Howeve, unknown paametes and conditions may estict geneal statements duing usage. It is vital that customes satisfy themselves as to the suitability of individual poducts though adequate testing. Fo this eason, and due to the wide ange of applications of ou poducts, Busak + Shamban can accept no liability as to the suitability o coectness of ou ecommendations in individual cases. The application limits fo pessue, tempeatue and speed given in this catalogue ae maximum values detemined in the laboatoy. Duing pactical applications it should be emembeed that due to the inteaction of the opeating paametes, the maximum values must be set coespondingly lowe. 2 Desciption Oiginal QUAD-RING R s ae fou lipped seals with a specially developed sealing pofile. A wide ange of elastome mateials fo both standad and special applications allows pactically all liquid and gaseous media to be sealed. QUAD-RING R s ae vulcanized as a continuous ing. They ae chaacteized by thei annula fom with a fou lipped pofile. Thei dimensions ae specified with the inside diamete d 1 and the coss-section W (Figue 1). d1 W - Unlike an O-Ring, the mould line flash lies in the tough, between and away fom the citical sealing lips. Method of Opeation QUAD-RING R s ae self enegizing double-acting sealing elements. The foces acting in adial o axial diection due to the installation give QUAD-RING R its initial leak-tightness (initial squeeze). These foces ae supeimposed by the system pessue. An oveall sealing foce is ceated which inceases with inceasing system pessue (Figue 2). Unde pessue, the seal behaves in a simila way to a fluid with high suface tension and the pessue is tansmitted unifomly to all sides. W Figue 1 QUAD-RING R dimensioning QUAD-RING R s ae supplied to the Ameican Standad AS 568 A. Advantages In contast to the O-ing, QUAD-RING R has a double sealing function. It equies a lowe initial squeeze, which esults in educed fiction duing dynamic applications. Futhemoe, it has a numbe of othe advantages ove the O-ing: - Avoids twisting in the goove. Due to its special pofile, the seal does not tend to oll in the goove duing ecipocating movement. - Low fiction. QUAD-RING R equies less adial squeeze than a compaable O-ing. Less squeeze mean less fiction, less wea, and thus a longe sevice life. - Vey good sealing efficiency. Due to an impoved pessue pofile ove QUAD-RING R coss-section, a high sealing effect is achieved. - A lubicant esevoi fomed between the sealing lips impoves stat up. 3 Applications Fields of Application QUAD-RING R s can be used fo a wide ange of diffeent applications. QUAD-RING R is used pedominantly fo dynamic sealing functions. It s use is always limited by the pessue to be sealed and the velocity. Dynamic Applications - Fo sealing of ecipocating pistons, ods, plunges, etc. - Fo sealing oscillating, otating o spial movements on shafts, spindles, otay tansmission leadthoughs, etc. Static Applications - As a adial-static seal, e.g. fo bushings, coves, pipes, etc. - As an axial-static seal, e.g. fo flanges, plates, caps, etc. - As a enegize element fo elastome enegized hydaulic seals whee thee is a isk of the O-ing twisting. Technical Data QUAD-RING R s can be used fo a wide ange of applications. The choice of a suitable mateial is detemined by the tempeatue, pessue and media. In ode to assess the suitability of QUAD-RING R as a sealing element fo a given application, the inteaction of all the opeating paametes have to be taken into consideation. Woking Pessue: Dynamic Application: Recipocating upto 5MPa( 50ba)withoutBack-upRing up to 30 MPa (300 ba) with Back-up Ring Rotating up to 15 MPa (150 ba) with Back-up Ring Static Application upto5mpa(50ba)withoutback-upring up to 40 MPa (400 ba) with Back-up Ring Please note the pemissible extusion gaps on page 9, Table III. Speed: Recipocating: up to 0.5 m/s Rotating: biefly up to 2.0 m/s Tempeatue: depending on mateial and media esistance, fo: Geneal Applications: -30 C to C Special Compounds: -60 C to C Rotating Applications: -30 C to+ 80 C When assessing the application citeia, the tansient peak and continuous opeating tempeatue and the cyclic duation facto must be taken into consideation. Fo otating applications, the inceases in tempeatue due to fictional heat must be taken into account. Media: With the lage ange of mateials, each with diffeent popeties, which ae now available, it is possible to seal against pactically all liquids, gases and chemicals. Please note when selecting the most suitable mateial the infomation in the esistance lists on pages 16, Table VI. 3

Mateials The available elastome mateials ae shown in the mateials list, Table VI on page 16. If no paticula specifications ae given fo the mateial, NBR (Acylonitile Butadiene Elastome) in 70 Shoe A will be supplied. The hadness is one of the most impotant and most fequently quoted popeties of elastome mateials. Nevetheless, the values can be vey misleading. Hadness cannot be egaded as a genuine measue of the igidity. Hadness measuements ae measuements of mino defomations at the suface. Rigidity measuements, on the othe hand, involve lage defomations of the mass as a whole. Fo this eason, no coelation can be dawn between hadness and igidity. Futhemoe the measued popety, namely the impession at the suface, is seldom a measue of the seviceability of the sealing element o the elastome aticle. The hadness values and thei toleances ae always based on the measuement in accodance with DIN 53505/ASTM D 2214 on a flat test specimen and ae expessed in Shoe A. Hadness measuements on finished poducts ae pefomed using the IRHD (Intenational Rubbe Hadness Duomete). Measuements on coss sections < 2 mm poduce inaccuate esults and ae theefoe not pemissible. In view of the diffeent measuing instuments used, Shoe A and IRHD values may diffe fom one anothe. This manifests itself, paticulaly when measuements have to be pefomed on cuved sufaces. With extenal gooves - intenal sealing applications - QUAD-RING R is installed in compessed state. The maximum compession in the installed state is 3 %. Exceeding these values will esult in an unallowable incease o decease in QUAD-RING R coss section. As a ule of thumb: a 1% incease in the inside diamete coesponds to a eduction in the cod diamete of appox. 0.5 %. Initial Squeeze An initial sqeeze of QUAD-RING R in the goove is essential to ensue its function as a pimay o seconday sealing element (Figue 3 ). It seves to: - Achieve the initial sealing capability - Bidge poduction-dependent toleances - Assue defined fictional foces - Compensate fo compession set - Compensate fo wea. Depending on the application, the following values apply fo the initial squeeze: Dynamic Applications: 6 to 18 % Static Applications: 8 to 25 % initial squeeze Design Instuctions Choice of QUAD-RING R size pessue = 0 The chosen coss section W should be in an appopiate atiototheinsidediameted 1. Fo static applications, QUAD-RING R s with smalle coss sections may be used. Elongation - Compession With a adial sealing configuation, QUAD-RING R in an intenal goove - extenal sealing - should be stetched ove the oot of the goove. The maximum elongation in the installed state is 6 %. pessue > 0 Figue 3 ing foce with and without system pessue 4

Methods of Installation of QUAD-RING R s QUAD-RING R scanbeusedincomponentsinawide vaiety of ways. At the design stage, the subsequent installation situation should be taken into consideation. To avoid damage duing installation it is not ecommended to assemble the QUAD-RING R ove edges o boes. Whee long sliding movements ae involved, the seal seat should be ecessed, if possible, o the sealing elements aanged so they only have to tavel shot distances duing installation. Radial Installation (static and dynamic) Intenal sealing QUAD-RING R size should be selected so that the inside diamete d 1 has the smallest possible deviation fom the diamete to be sealed d 5 (Figue 4). Extenal sealing QUAD-RING R size should be selected so that the inside diamete d 1 is equal to o smalle than the goove oot diamete d 3. Axial-static Installation Duing axial-static installation, the diection of the pessue should be taken into consideation when choosing QUAD-RING R size (Figue 5). With intenal pessue, QUAD-RING R outside diamete should be chosen appox. 1 to 2 % lage than the goove outside diamete. With extenal pessue, QUAD-RING R is chosen appox. 1 to 3 % smalle than the goove inside diamete. d5 d1 d3 W W Figue 4 Radial installation, static and dynamic d8 d7 d8 d7 pessue inside pessue fom outside Figue 5 Axial installation, static 5

QUAD-RING R fo Rotay Application In applications with small cyclic peiods of activity, QUAD-RING R can also be used fo sealing otating shafts. In this case, the following points should be obseved: In ode to function as a otay seal, QUAD-RING R must be installed in accodance with specific guidelines, the otay seal pinciple. The otay seal pinciple is based on the fact that an elongated elastome ing (O-Ring o QUAD-RING R ) contacts when wam (Joule effect). With the nomal method of installation (inside diamete d 1 < shaft diamete), the fictional heat would cause the ing to contact even futhe. This esults in a highe pessue on the otating shaft so that a lubicant film is pevented fom foming unde the seal and even highe fiction occus. The esult would be inceased wea and a pematue failue of the seal. Using the otay seal pinciple, this is pevented by the seal ing being selected so that its inside diamete is appox. 2 to 5 % lage than the shaft diamete to be sealed. The installation in the goove means that the seal ing is compessed adially and is pessed against the shaft by the goove oot. The seal ing is thus slightly cougated in the goove, which helps to impove the lubication. The otay seal pinciple can be neglected at peipheal speeds of less than 0.5 m/s. X-sel R QUAD-RING R s A special QUAD-RING R, Type X-sel R, is ecommended fo otay seal applications. X- sel R QUAD-RING R s have a special, thin and highly wea-esistant plastic coating. This blue coating educes fiction by absobing lubicant in its poous suface and thus inceasing the abasion esistance. Fo installation dimensions fo a pefeed seies with and without back-up ing, see Table IX, page Goove Design Rectangula Goove QUAD-RING R s ae installed in ectangula gooves. Designs with bevelled goove flanks up to 5 d ae pemissible. If back-up ings ae used, staight goove flanks ae necessay (Figue 6). The goove widths specified in ou ecommendations aleady take into account a limited swelling of the seals. Figue 6 Sufaces Goove design Unde pessue, elastomes adapt to iegula sufaces. Fo gas o liquid-tight joints, howeve, cetain minimum demandsmustbemadeonthesufacequalityofthe sufaces to be sealed. Fundamentally gooves, scatches, pit maks, concentic o spial machining scoes, etc. ae not pemissible. Highe demands must be placed on the suface quality of dynamic mating sufaces than on static sealing sufaces. At pesent, no unifom definitions exist fo descibing the mating sufaces. In pactice, the specification of the R a value is not sufficient to pemit an assessment of the suface quality. Ou ecommendations theefoe contain vaious tems and definitions in accodance with DIN 4768/1 and ISO 1302 (Table I). 1 Table I Suface Finish Type of Load Suface R max [ m] R z [ m] R a [ m] Radial-dynamic Radial-static Axial-static *gound without spials Mating suface* (boe, od, shaft) 1,0-2,5 0,63-1,6 0,1-0,4 Goove suface (goove oot, goove flanks) Mating suface Goove suface (goove oot, goove flanks) Fo pulsating pessues: Mating suface Goove suface (goove oot, goove flanks) 10,0 6,3 1,6 10,0 16,0 6,3 10,0 6,3 10,0 4,0 6,3 1,6 3,2 0,8 1,6 6

Lead-in Chamfes Beaing in mind the subsequent installation equiements duing the design of QUAD-RING R can help to eliminate possible souces of damage and seal failue fom the outset. ounded, polished Since QUAD-RING R s ae always fitted ovesize, lead-in chamfes and ounded edges must be povided (Figues 7 and 8). The lengths of the Lead-in Chamfes ae specified in Table II. The pemissible suface oughness of the Lead-in Chamfe is defined as follows: R max <2.5 m R z <1.6 m R a <0.4 m Table II Lead-in chamfes Lead-in Chamfes Length z min. If the extusion gap is too lage, thee is a isk of seal extusion which can esult in the destuction of the QUAD-RING R (Figue 9). The pemissible gap S between the pats to be sealed depends on the system pessue, the coss section and the shoe hadness of the QUAD-RING R. 8 Installation of QUAD-RING R s with Back-up Rings Anothe possible method of potecting QUAD-RING R fom extusion into the gap is the additional installation of Back-up Rings. The installation of Back-up Rings is geneally ecommended when at least one of the following conditions exists: - High pessues - above appox. 5 MPa (50 ba) - Lage toleances o gaps between the pats to be sealed - High tempeatues o tempeatue fluctuations duing expansion of the pats unde pessue - High degee of contaminants in the system. Whee the pessue acts fom only one side, it is sufficient to install a Back-up Ring on the side away fom the pessue. Whee the pessue acts fom both sides, two back-up ings - one on each side of QUAD-RING R - ae necessay. A complete summay of ou back-up ing poduct ange can be found in the catalogue Back-up Rings. The following tables offe the designe the pefeed seies. They pemit easy selection and the assignment of the Back-up Rings to QUAD-RING R sizes and goove dimensions. Extenal sealing installation, Table VII, page Intenal sealing installation, Table VIII, page Rotay seal installation, Table IX, page The selection seies contains two Back-up Ring types: - Split, spial-type design, pefeed fo both extenal and intenal sealing applications (boe and shaft) - One-piece design, pefeably fo intenal sealing applications (shaft) unde adially-dynamic loads. The standad mateial fo the Back-up Ring is vigin PTFE. Special mateials, e.g. fo injection moulded Back-up Rings, on equest. Installation Instuctions Geneal Instuctions Befoe stating installation, check the following points: - Lead-in Chamfes made accoding to dawing? - Intenal boes debued and edges ounded? - Machining esidues, e.g. chips, dit and foeign paticles, emoved? - Scew thead tips coveed? - s and components geased o oiled befoe installation. Ensue media compatibility with the elastome mateial. - Do not use lubicants with solid additives, e.g. molybdenum disulphide o zinc sulphide. Installation by Hand - Use no shap tools! - Use installation aids wheeve possible - Do not ovestetch QUAD-RING R. Automatic Installation Automatic QUAD-RING R installation equies good pepaation. The sufaces of QUAD-RING R s ae fequently teated by molycoating, gaphitizing, powdeing with talcum o coated with PTFE. This offes a numbe of benefits duing installation by - Reducing the installation foces equied - Non-stick effects, easy emoval. The handling and installation of dimensionally unstable components equies a geat deal of expeience. Reliable automated installation thus demands special handling and packing of QUAD-RING R. 26 Stoage (The notes in italics only apply to elastomeic sealing mateials) s and beaings ae often stoed as spae pats fo polonged peiods. With a few simple pecautions, the shelf life of these poducts can be consideably lengthened. s and beaings should be stoed whee they ae safe fom damage by extenal influences. Defomation, in paticula, should be avoided duing stoage. Unde the influence of vaious extenal factos e.g. heat, moistue, light, oxygen, ozone and as a esult of contact with liquid media, the popeties of cetain mateials may change. Fo example, defomation, ageing and weatheing can cause deteioation of the oiginal mechanical and physical popeties, depending on the mateial and shape of the pats. Fundamental instuctions on stoage, cleaning and maintenance of elastome seal elements ae descibed in intenational standads, such as: Stoage of ubbe poducts: DIN 7716/BS 3F68:1977 Maximum age limitation: MIL-HDBK-695C o MIL-STD-1523A o DIN 9088 The individual guidelines give seveal ecommendations fo the shelf life of elastomes, depending on the mateial classes. The following guidelines should be obseved to maintain the optimum physical and chemical popeties of the pats: Heat The ideal tempeatue fo stoage is between +5 C/41 F and +25 C/77 F. Diect contact with heates should be avoided. Moistue Pats may be stoed dy unde nomal atmospheic conditions (65% el. moistue 10). Weatheing To potect them against damage, seals and beaings should be kept in the oiginal sealed packaging. Ozone Destuction of cetain elastomeic sealing mateials due to ozone can be caused by the following machines and equipment: Mecuy dischage lamps High voltage equipment Electic motos Electic spak souces o dischages. Quality citeia The cost-effective use of seals and beaings is highly influenced by the quality citeia applied in poduction. s and beaings manufactued by Busak + Shamban ae continuously monitoed accoding to stict quality standads fom mateial acquisition though to delivey. Cetification of ou poduction plants in accodance with intenational standads EN ISO 9000 meets the specific equiements fo quality contol and management of puchasing, poduction and maketing functions. Ou quality policy is consistently contolled by stict pocedues and guidelines which ae implemented within all stategic aeas of the company. All testing of mateials and poducts is pefomed in accodance with accepted test standads and specifications, e.g. andom sample testing in accodance with DIN ISO 2859 pat 1/ANSI/ASQC Z / MIL-STD- 105 E. Inspection specifications coespond to standads applicable to individual poduct goups (e.g. fo O-Rings: ISO 3601/DIN 3771). All tests on mateials and seal elements ae pefomed accoding to the elevant intenational standads and test egulations, such as e.g. the andom sample testing in accodance with ISO/DIN 2859 Pat 1/MIL-STD-105E o the test of O-Rings to ISO 3601 (DIN 3771). Ou sealing mateials ae poduced fee of chloofluoinated hydocabons and cacinogenic elements. The tenth digit of ou pat numbe defines the quality chaacteistics of the pat. A hyphen indicates compliance with standad quality citeia outlined in this catalogue. Custome-specific equiements ae indicated by a diffeent symbol in this position. Customes who equie special quality citeia should contact thei local Busak + Shamban sales office fo assistance. We have expeience in meeting all Custome quality equiements. 26
