Konstantin Rozanov kozanov@yandex.u. Septembe 3, 2018 Abstact Measuement esults fo a meandeed plana inveted-f antenna (PIFA) loaded with magnetodielectic and dielectic mateials ae pesented. Figues of meit and ways to compae antennas with diffeent fillings mateials ae discussed. The used magneto-dielectic mateial is descibed, the adiation mechanism of the meandeed PIFA is studied, and the pope position fo dielectic and magneto-dielectic filling is discussed and identified. Identical-size antennas with dielectic and magneto-dielectic fillings ae compaed at the same esonance fequency using the adiation quality facto as the figue of meit. It is seen, that the benefit fom the magneto-dielectic filling mateial is modeate and stongly dependent on the positioning of the filling.
2 2 1 Intoduction A substate with lossless and dispesion-fee pemeability µ highe than the pemittivity ɛ could theoetically lead to substantially wide impedance bandwidths in patch antennas [1]. Howeve, new atificial and composite magnetic mateials have not yet poved thei expectations in patchantenna miniatuization. Atificial magnetic mateials, such as those based on split-ing esonatos, ae dispesive by natue, and in case of Loentzian-type dispesion, patch-antenna miniatuization in tems of impoved adiation quality facto is impossible, as compaed to a efeence design [2]. As opposed to atificial mateials, substates with natual magnetic inclusions can povide easonably lage static values of pemeability with elatively low dispesion, and miniatuization is possible [3]. In this pape we pesent measuement esults of a meandeed plana inveted-f antenna (PIFA) miniatuized with a magneto-dielectic mateial, and miniatuization using conventional dielectic mateial is used as a efeence fo compaison. Moden mateial manufactuing technology has made possible to design composite substates with magnetic inclusions mixed with dielectic host mateials. Antennas with magneto-dielectic mateials ae studied expeimentally in [4 13]. Known magnetic mateials tend to be lossy, and in antenna applications the adiation efficiency becomes the main figue of meit in addition to the unloaded quality facto o impedance bandwidth. Pevious esults in antenna miniatuization and efficiency include [14 16]. When using magneto-dielectic substates in miniatuization, miniatuization is equivalent to a decease of the esonant electical size of the antenna at a given opeating fequency. A question that should be answeed when using novel mateials is whethe the used mateial outpefoms the taditional miniatuization methods [17]. If we accept that by using magnetic substates we can, at least in theoy, miniatuize a patch antenna without deceasing noticeably the bandwidth, we also have to challenge it against available dielectic mateial. Good-quality dielectic mateials have low loss, but magneto-dielectic mateials ae typically consideably moe lossy. Theefoe, both the adiation efficiency and the measued unloaded quality facto must be used when compaing the same antenna with magneto-dielectic and dielectic fillings. This has been done in this pape by using the adiation quality facto as as a figue of meit, whee the effect of dissipative losses in the antenna have been nomalized away fom the esults. The quality facto of a small antenna depends on the opeating fequency and the antenna size in addition to effective utilization of the antenna s volume [18], so one has to be caeful when compaing antennas with diffeent fillings. When compaing an antenna with magneto-dielectic
3 3 and dielectic mateials, the quality facto must be measued at the same fequency fo both cases. Moeove, the physical size of the antenna should also be the same. We discuss in this aticle the necessay conditions fo fai compaison between antennas with diffeent mateial fillings. Resonant antennas in geneal behave diffeently when using magnetic o dielectic mateials fo filling. This can be undestood easily fom the field distibutions inside antennas. It has been poposed, that in some cases the optimal filling mateial can be detemined fom the adiating fields [19, 20]. We discuss how to choose and also position the used filling mateials fo antennas in geneal, and use these guidelines fo the meandeed PIFA unde study [21]. In Section 2, we descibe the needed figues of meit and discuss how to compae antennas in pactice. Section 3 descibes the used magneto-dielectic mateial and Section 4 pesents the antenna unde test and the esults of the measuements. The measuement esults ae analyzed and discussed in Section 5 and conclusions ae made in Section 6. 2 Antenna Meits and Compaison Befoe we stat descibing the measuements, we will eview and discuss the measued paametes. The obvious figue of meit fo small antenna measuements is the unloaded quality facto, o the adiation quality facto when the adiation efficiency of the antenna is included in calculations. Howeve, when compaing two small antennas, we must also conside the size o volume, and the esonance fequency togethe. 2.1 Figues of Meit fo Small Antennas Fist we discuss the figues of meit fo antenna measuements. In othe wods, we define what we want to use when compaing pefomance of antennas. The adiation efficiency is the atio between the adiated powe P and the total accepted powe P tot. P tot is the sum of P and the dissipated powe P L in the antenna. Using the Thevenin equivalent antenna impedance Z a = R a + jx a and dividing the antenna esistance as R a = R + R L, whee R coesponds to adiated powe and R L to dissipated powe, we can wite the adiation efficiency as (e.g. [18]): η = P P tot = P P + P L = R R + R L. (1)
4 4 Using the Wheele-cap method to calculate the adiation efficiency [22], the ight-hand pat of (1) can be diectly applied to find η fom the measued Z a. The antenna quality facto Q and the bandwidth B of an antenna with a single esonance ae elated to each othe with the voltage standing wave atios (VSWRs) as follows: If the bandwidth citeion is VSWR < S and T is the VSWR at the esonant fequency, Q can be calculated as [23] Q = 1 (T S 1)(S T ). (2) B S It follows fom (2), that fo a cetain desied matching level we should have half the eflection coefficient fo the optimal ove-coupled esonance. Fo example, fo S 11 = 6 db matching level, the eflection coefficient should be 12 db at the cente fequency of the esonance. It has been ecently poposed, that the quality facto can be appoximatively solved diectly fom the impedance also fo antennas with lossy and dispesive mateials: [24, 25] Q = ω Z a 2R a ω, (3) ω=ω0 although, stictly speaking, the knowledge of only Z a is not enough to find the atio between adiated, stoed and dissipated powes. When the quality facto is calculated fom (2) o (3), the effect of dissipated powe in the antenna can be emoved fom Q by using the adiation quality facto Q = Q η. (4) In pactice, when we measue an antenna and solve Q fom the S 11 paamete o fom Z a, we must use (4) to compae antennas with diffeent η. 2.2 Antenna Filling Now that we know what to compae in antenna measuements, we must set up ules how we compae antennas with diffeent loading mateials. When dealing with small antennas, the wellknown lowe limit fo the quality facto (e.g. [18]) Q 1 (ka) 3, (5)
5 5 can be thought to hold with ka 1. It is calculated fom the stoed aveage enegy outside a sphee with adius a suounding the antenna. If we assume that a 3 is popotional to the volume V of an antenna, we can wite the minimum quality facto as follows: Q 1 f 3 V, (6) since k = 2πf µɛ. Now, it is obvious fom (6) that if we compae the quality factos of two antennas, they should have the same volume V and the same opeating fequency f. Othewise it is not possible to come to any conclusion which one of the antennas has e.g. the lagest potential bandwidth and comes close to the fundamental limit. In fact, the bandwidth itself is a difficult figue of meit since both Q and the adiation efficiency affect it. Because of this, we favo the adiation quality facto below. The effect of mateial filling, patial o full, on antenna pefomance is not simple. Is has been poposed in [19] that the most beneficial mateial type can be detemined analyzing the adiating cuents of the antenna. Next, we summaize the steps needed fo an efficient design of a small mateial-loaded antenna. i) Identify the adiating fields o cuents. Fo example, in case of patch antennas, most of the adiation is poduced by the finging electic fields at the open ends of the patch. The suface cuent due to the magnetic field is canceled by the image cuent below the gound plane, but the magnetic equivalent cuent fom the electic field is doubled. ii) Detemine the fields contibuting mainly to the stoed enegy. If eithe electic o magnetic field does not povide adiation, it is safe to use dielectic o magnetic mateials, espectively, to suppess these fields and make the esonating wavelength lage, i.e. to miniatuize the antenna. iii) Apply the filling to the ight place. If possible, use the filling mateial only at the place whee it has the desied effect. Thee is no need to use dielectic o magnetic filling in places whee thee is no electic o magnetic fields, espectively. Magneto-dielectic mateials have, of couse, both magnetic and dielectic mateial esponses. If we use the mateial in a position with stong magnetic field but weak electic field, we use only the magnetic popeties which may be beneficial and not the hamful dielectic popeties, depending on the antenna type. When compaing miniatuization using diffeent mateial types,
6 6 the compaison should still be fai. By following the afoementioned ules, magneto-dielectic mateial should be positioned only in the magnetic field, and dielectic mateial at least in the electic field. Patch antennas have been studied in [26, 27] with low-loss substates, and it is seen that the mateial loading affects not only the bandwidth, but also the cuent and field distibutions inside the antenna cavity and the adiation popeties of the antenna. Miniatuization of antennas with with dispesive mateials and consideable losses is difficult to analyze, and good analytical models ae not available fo complicated antennas. 3 Magneto-Dielectic Composite Mateial The magneto-dielectic mateial fo volumetic antenna filling must be a bulk mateial if a consideable filling faction is desied in patch antenna applications. One pomising candidate is a magneto-dielectic composite mateial which is composed of myla substate and sputteed multilayeed Fe-SiO 2 films [28 30]. By using this technology, magnetic esponse can be achieved at micowave fequencies without excessively high dissipation losses. Fo the discussion about magnetic mateials fo micowave applications, see [3, Section III]. With this technology, bulk magnetic samples of mm 3 in size wee manufactued. Each sample consisted of 28 multi-laye films glued each to othe. Each film included five Fe-N layes of 0.07 µm in thickness deposited on both sides of 0.07-µm thick myla substate, with the total of ten layes. The feomagnetic layes wee sepaated by SiO 2 intelayes of 0.07µm thickness. The thickness of the glue layes between the films was appoximately 5 µm. To educe the conductivity along the film plane, the glued samples ae cut into stipes of 2 mm in width, stacked togethe and secued by two pieces of adhesive tape as is shown in the figue. The thickness of the adhesive tape is about 40 µm, theefoe the total thickness of the sampled is between 0.5 and 0.6 mm. The concentation of the magnetic constituent in the sample is 3.5%. The stuctue of the sample is sketched in Fig. 1(a). The micowave pefomance has been expeimentally studied with the stip-line technique [31]. The measued pemeability of the sample is pesented in Fig. 1(b), fo the fequency ange of 130 MHz to 5 GHz. The elative pemeability e.g. at f = 500 MHz is µ = µ jµ = µ (1 j tan δ m ) = 5.1(1 j0.08), whee the magnetic loss tangent tan δ m = µ /µ. The bulk sample was stacked fom a seies of laminates so that the magnetic esponse was isotopic along

This in-plane isotopy allows moe flexible use of the mateial in antennas. The elative pemittivity of the mateial is in the neighbohood of ɛ = with the dielectic loss tangent of about tan δ e = The in-plane conductivity of the layeed mateial along the cuts is high, which can lead to consideable losses if the electic field exists in this diection. 4 Expeimental Antenna Compaison One of the antenna types suitable fo loading with magnetic mateials is the patch antenna. Howeve, when examining the pemeability cuves of the mateial seen in Fig. 1(b), we see that the mateial becomes vey lossy when the fequency is in the gigahetz ange. In fequencies below 1 GHz, the wavelength is howeve so long, that a nomal λ/2 patch antenna is simply too lage fo e.g. potable-device applications. Theefoe, we decided to use a plana inveted-f antenna (PIFA) which is a compact vesion of a shoted λ/4 patch antenna. The size was educed even futhe by meandeing the patch of the PIFA. Such an antenna could be used e.g. fo the DVB-H system, with pope vaacto cicuit used to tune the antenna ove the fequency ange [32]. 4.1 Antenna Unde Study With the meandeed PIFA, the fundamental opeation of the antenna can be assumed to be simila to nomal PIFAs despite the meande line as the patch element. That is, vetical electic field and
8 8 Figue 2: The meandeed PIFA dimensions, see also Table 1. Table 1: Dimensions fo the pototype meandeed PIFA of Fig. 2. Abb. If the fields ae simila to the nomal λ/4 esonating cavity, the finging electic field is the majo field poviding adiation. In addition to the miniatuized cavity size, we want to study the antenna with a small gound plane, that is typically found in potable devices. The chosen antenna fo this study is pesented in Fig. 2 and the dimensions ae seen in Table 1. The meandeed patch and the gound plane fom a cavity with the height h p = 8 mm and volume V 0 = 7360 mm 3. The shoting stip is fomed when the meande line is tuned down and connected to the gound plane. The patch is fed via a feed pobe at a distance x 0 of a few millimetes to the shoting stip so that the desied matching level is obtained. The gound plane has the dimensions mm 2. The shoting stip and the meande line add up to the complexity and make the use of filling moe difficult. The vetical shoting stip has a high cuent that contibutes to adiation. The stong hoizontal cuent at the meande line nea the shoting stip may also adiate since the distance fom the gound plane is consideable, and also the gound plane is not lage enough to poduce the image cuent which would cancel the adiation.
9 9 The fields of the meandeed PIFA wee analyzed in detail using Ansoft HFSS full-wave simulato [33]. It was seen, that the adiation is still poduced mainly by the finging electic field at the open end of the patch because of the ealized omni-diectional adiation patten oiented appoximately along the long edge of the gound plane. Fig. 3 shows the esonating electic and magnetic fields inside the cavity in the xy-plane, at z = 3 mm fom the gound plane. The vetical z-diected electic field is stong at the open end of the patch (the left side of the patch in Fig. 3), and it is weak nea the shoting stip. The magnetic field in the hoizontal xy-plane, on the othe hand, is concentated on the ight-hand side, nea the shoting stip. This configuation with pedominating hoizontal magnetic field is suited fo the magneto-dielectic mateial with in-plane isotopic magnetic esponse. Also, since the electic field is vetical thoughout the cavity, the conductive Fe-N layes do not povide excessive mateial losses. The fields nea the meandeed line ae stong due to the small details and distances, and the mateial losses would become too lage with the used magneto-dielectic mateial. We can conclude that the optimal places fo the magneto-dielectic filling is nea the shoting stip and fo the dielectic filling nea the open end of the patch (fo the latte case, see [26]). 4.2 Antenna Measuements Afte the fields in the meandeed PIFA wee identified and veified by simulations, pototype antennas wee manufactued fom coppe accoding to the dimensions in Fig. 2. Since magnetic loading diminishes the magnetic field, and dielectic does the same to the electic field, the change can also be seen in the atio of voltage and cuent (Z = V/I), i.e. in the atio of electic and magnetic fields, at the feed position. The dielectic loading deceases Z and the magnetic inceases it. Because of this, two antenna pototypes wee manufactued, one designed to have a easonable matching with dielectic and one with magnetic loading. The impedance measuements wee fist done in an anechoic chambe using a vecto netwok analyze (VNA). A fixed coaxial cable was used to feed the patch as seen in Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 so that the cable potuded fom the long edge of the gound plane. This helps to minimize the effect of the measuement cable on the measued impedance. Then, the same impedance measuements wee done using the Wheele cap to find the impedance without adiation [22]. A cylindical aluminum cap with 158-mm adius and 148-mm height was used on top of an aluminum gound plane. The antennas wee suspended in the cente of the Wheele cap by the fixed cable, and the VNA was connected though the gound plane. The antennas wee diected so that the y-axis (see

The xy-plane is seen fom the top, and the meandeed patch is maked with a solid white line. The shoting stip and the cylindical feed pobe can be seen in the top-ight cone of the patch. Fom the measued impedance cuves we calculate the quality facto Q using (2) and 3), the adiation efficiency η using (1) and finally the adiation quality facto Q using (4).

The fist antenna unde test (AUT) is designed fo magneto-dielectic loading and the second fo dielectic loading. The empty antennas wee fist measued as efeence. The ealized esonance fequencies wee f 0 = MHz and f 0 = MHz with η = 84.1% and η = 85.0%, espectively. The diffeence in f 0 is due to slightly diffeent feeding points and manufactuing toleances of the empty antennas. The simulations un duing the design of an empty antenna gave a vey simila efficiency of 84.9% as the measuements and so acted as a veification fo the Wheele-cap measuement setup. The measued eflection coefficients (S 11 ) fo both of the antennas can be seen in Fig. 5. The efeence plane of S 11 is moved numeically fom the connecto of the cable to the feeding point of the patch. Next, the measuements fo the dielectic and magneto-dielectic filling wee conducted as follows. A chosen size and shape of magneto-dielectic mateial was placed inside the antenna

The positions and sizes ae pesented in Fig. 6 and Table 2. Then, a suitable amount of high-quality Roges RT/duoid 6002 dielectic substate was placed in the antenna designed fo dielectic loading, in the open end of the cavity whee the electic field is highest, since this is the optimal place fo dielectic filling [26]. The amount and place of the dielectic mateial was tuned until the same ealized esonance fequency f 0 was obtained as with the magnetodielectic mateial. Now with the same f 0 fo both antennas, the fee-space and Wheele-cap impedance esponses fo the dielectic-filled antenna wee measued, and Q, η and Q could be calculated fo both antennas. The atio of the adiation quality factos Q el calculated finally fo a pai of antenna measuements, whee Q magn and Q diel quality factos with magneto-dielectic and dielectic filling, espectively. The fixed feed cable, which was used to make eliable impedance and efficiency measuements, has howeve an effect on the impedance. Measued Q magn and Q diel include a small uncetainty

Some inheent uncetainty appea also fom the VNA s S-paamete measuement. This has also a small uncetainty effect on Q. The two antennas unde compaison wee not pefectly identical due to manufactuing constaints, e.g. thee may be some diffeences in the dimensions. Especially, even the smallest vaiations in the patch height affects the measued esonance fequency, as do small vaiations in the feed position of the pobe.

With the magneto-dielectic filling the values ae consideably lowe due to highe dissipative losses than with the pue dielectic filling. As the effect of dissipative losses is emoved, we see the effect of the mateial esponse to the quality factos. The measued adiation quality factos in Fig. 9 and Fig. 10 ae simila. In both cases we see the effect of miniatuization: as the esonance fequency deceases, the quality facto also inceases. This undelines the fact that with small antennas the esonance fequency must be the same fo fai compaison. The ecently poposed equation (3)

The black-andwhite makes ae calculated using (2) and the gay makes using (3). seems to give easonable estimates fo Q. The esults fom (2) and (3) ae within uncetainty limits fom each othe. With the used antenna type the magnetic esponse does not lead to bandwidthindependent miniatuization, as it would be expected fo e.g. λ/2 patch antennas [19, 27], but the diffeences ae athe small. When we examine the individual filling cases of Table 6, we see the diffeences fo Q fom Fig. 11 and Table 3. The mateial blocks used in position A at diffeent heights ae positioned in stong magnetic field. As the height of the block inceases, f 0 deceases, as does η. The 4-mm tall magneto-dielectic block and efeence dielectic fillings lead to appoximately the same Q as Q el is close to unity, but as h inceases, the magnetic losses also incease and the efeence dielectic povides bette Q. Magneto-dielectic filling in position B, on the othe hand, miniatuizes the antenna mostly due to the electic field effect. The efeence mateial has a pue dielectic esponse, wheeas the magneto-dielectic mateial has both mateial-type esponses. One would expect that the adiation quality factos would poduce simila esults, but the measued Q el < 1. The eason behind this is pobably in the diffeent adiation popeties due to diffeent field distibutions inside the cavity. Positions C and D give simila esults to position A, only with a smalle footpint of the filling block. We see that the block in position C behaves similaly as the block in position A with h = 4 mm and the same volume, and povides Q el close to unity. Howeve, the block of position D utilizes the stong magnetic field close to the shoting stip moe efficiently than the block with h = 2 mm in position A, leading to highe Q el. Does the magneto-dielectic mateial pefom bette in tems of lowe adiation quality facto
17 17 in the studied meandeed PIFA? Due to the discussed uncetainties, the obseved Q el above unity in some cases in Fig. 11 ae within the uncetainty limits, so no definitive answe can be given. The obseved decease in the esonance fequency, i.e. miniatuization, was modeate (8%) fo the filling cases that benefit most fom the magneto-dielectic mateial. This suggests that with a moe effective mateial placement and highe values of µ, the effect would be stonge. With the used magneto-dielectic mateial, highe values of µ (highe filling atio of Fe) would also lead to highe mateial losses, which in tun would decease the adiation efficiency. Theefoe, with available magnetic mateials, we cannot use only Q el as the only figue of meit, but in addition the ealized adiation efficiency of the miniatuized antenna must be high enough fo pactical applications. Howeve, we must take into account that the mateial losses most likely have some effect to the measued Q though changed field distibutions inside the antenna. That is, afte the powe has been accepted to the antenna volume, the adiated powe may still depend e.g. on the filling mateial and types. It can be seen fom the measuement esults that when filling a small antenna patially, positioning of the filling mateial is cucial fo achieving the desied effect. The used magnetodielectic mateial dictates additional estictions fo the antenna. Also the losses depend on the field configuation. Even small mateial losses, in addition to the conducto losses, can lead to geatly diminished adiation efficiency of small antennas. If it would be possible to manufactue mateials with adequate magnetic esponse and low losses in the gigahetz-ange, the situation would be diffeent. Since the adiation quality facto of small antennas with fixed volume fo hand-held devices deceases as fequency inceases, such antennas would toleate lage losses at highe fequencies. 6 Conclusion When measuing and compaing small antennas with mateial loading, special cae must be paid to make the compaison fai. The adiation quality facto as the figue of meit fo small esonant antennas and the most beneficial patial filling places fo magneto-dielectic and dielectic mateial samples in esonant antennas wee discussed. Measuement esults wee pesented fo a meandeed PIFA with fabicated magneto-dielectic mateial and compaed accoding to the pesented guidelines to a efeence dielectic mateial filling. It was seen that the benefit fom the magneto-dielectic mateial is stongly dependent on the positioning of the mateial. The measued
18 18 benefit is modeate due to low miniatuization atio with the used antenna type and small volume of the patial filling and also due to magnetic losses. Magnetic mateials with highe values of weakly-dispesive pemeability and with smalle losses ae needed fo effective miniatuization of antennas.
