The 1 st European NEFERTITI workshop was successfully held in September 3-5, 2002, in Duisburg, Germany. The workshop was entitled High-Frequency Signal Generation and Processing for Future Broadband Fiber-Radio Systems covering the following topics mentioned in the proposal (see Part B, table 1) a.) Radio-on-Fiber Systems, b.) Optical Signal Processing, c.) THZ Photonics and mm-wave Generation and d.) European Networking in Microwave Photonics. Internationally recognized speakers were invited, presenting an overall number of 19 presentations on novel scientific and technical results in the field of Microwave Photonics. In addition, an industrial exhibit was organised. Altogether 46 participants from 9 different European countries and the USA attended the workshop, among them 32 participants from academia and 14 from industry. The major scientific goal of the workshop was the identification and discussion of state-of-the-art microwave/optoelectronic components and techniques for future broadband fiber-wireless access and airborne applications. To ensure the dissemination and exploitation of the results presented at the workshop and to raise the awareness of NEFERTITI, a proceedings CD has been recorded covering all presentations in pdf-format as well as additional information on the NEFERTITI project. This CD has been sent to all workshop participants, NEFERTITI members and further interested persons. All information and pdf-files were also forwarded to the CO for making them accessible on the official NEFERTITI web side In addition a local german website has been created Partners owning: CR12 Partners contributed: CO1, CR2, CR3, MB9, MB11 Made available to: all CRs and all MBs

5 1 st NEFERTITI European Workshop on High-Frequency Optical Signal Generation and Processing for Future Broadband Fiber-Radio Systems Sept Duisburg, Germany SCOPE The workshop aims to offer a forum for European researchers to exchange their knowledge on Microwave Photonics techniques and components especially focussing on high-frequency signal generation and processing. New developments and innovative applications in the field radio-on-fiber systems will be presented to enhance the dissemination and exploitation of recent achievements. The workshop further aims in identifying potential benefits of optical technologies for future European networking and integrated research strategies. BACKGROUND AND MOTIVATION The success of the modern Information Society is backed by two fundamental properties that modern communication infrastructures offer: mobility or bandwidth. This has been achieved by two fundamental independent technologies: wireless and optical fiber communication. While wireless systems offer mobility, optical fiber communications provide the massive bandwidth that fuelled the huge demand in Internet traffic. These two nowadayscomplementary technologies will eventually converge. For conventional electrical RF technology it is quite difficult to develop a multi-standard and multi-band remote front-end transponder that could work from GSM up to new generation of wireless LAN, without duplicating several RF devices, and the feasibility of a broadband radio front end transponder that could work up to 60GHz seems very unlikely. Microwave Photonic technology is able to fill in this gap, as it should allow the development of ultra-wide band remote front-end RF transponder, without duplication of any device. Novel and innovative photonic components and techniques for optical signal generation and processing required in such ultra-wide band transponder will be the key technical topic of this workshop. ORGANISATION The workshop is organised by Andreas Stöhr, Dieter Jäger and Karin Tempel from Gerhard- Mercator-Universität Duisburg, within the framework of the European Network of Excellence on Broadband Fiber-Radio Techniques and its Integration Technologies (NEFERTITI). TOPICS The workshop will include the following technical topics: BROADBAND RADIO-ON-FIBER SYSTEMS OPTICAL MILLIMETER-WAVE GENERATION AND MIXING TECHNIQUES OPTICAL UP- AND DOWN CONVERSION ULTRA-FAST OPTICAL COMPONENTS PHOTONIC LOCAL OSCILLATORS AND TRANSPONDER 4

6 Registration The participation to the NEFERTITI workshop is free of charge and is not limited to NEFERTITI members. However, the maximum number of attendees is limited. 8 Travelling by plane, nearest airport: D ü s s e l d o r f The distance from the airport to the hotel is about 25 kilometers. We recommend to use a taxi from the airport to the Hotel which costs approx Train connections from the airport to Duisburg main station ( Hauptbahnhof ) are also convenient (approx. 12minutes). Travelling by train: Leave at Duisburg main station (Hauptbahnhof). You are free to walk (10 minutes) or take a taxi (costs approx. 5.00). Travelling by car: From any direction follow the signs to the Duisburg motorway junction A3 / A40 (Autobahnkreuz Duisburg Kaiserberg). Leave the motorway in the junction at exit Duisburg- Kaiserberg. After leaving the motorway turn left for Universität and Zoo. After underpassing a footbridge (100m), turn right following direction Duisburg Zentrum. After 100m you are forced to turn right onto the Mülheimer Straße. Following that street you will underpass a bridge (railway bridge) after two kilometers. After the bridge turn right at the third traffic lights. The hotel is on the right hand side. Parking slots are limited directly at the hotel. We therefore recommend you to turn left already at the second traffic lights after the railway bridge following the parking signs. Supported The workshop will be co-sponsored by: 7
