1 Introduction 1.1 Background The dissemination activities of the COVER project are part of the task 2.1 activities. The goal of these activities is to maximise the dissemination of results of COVER and the underlying projects. For the future implementation of research findings in industry design processes as well as regulatory & rating procedures, it is essential to seek for agreement on and acceptance of the findings and conclusions at relevant stakeholders. For this purpose interaction with groups like GRSP, ACEA, CLEPA, and Euro NCAP is crucial. Some of the involved projects have already included this into their dissemination activity. However, for the objective of dissemination both towards relevant high-level stakeholders and the general public a coordinated approach via the COVER project is important to facilitate in providing a clear message and obtaining the necessary visibility. However, all of the COVER projects have their own dissemination work packages. Therefore, dissemination activities within COVER largely focus on: 1) Providing an overview of the underlying projects, their interactions and progress of overall research results. This part is done via the website, leaflets & newspapers, presentations at conferences, seminars and workshops. 2) High level dissemination of project results to key stakeholder organisations linked to industry and governments including consumer testing organisations. Via the COVER projects links are established with key working groups like GRSP Informal Groups & ACEA Working Groups to provide information on the projects and facilitate presentations by the projects. Depending on the topic, this can be either individually per project or jointly. 3) The organisation of a dedicated sessions in / workshops linked to key conferences on impact biomechanics and child safety in which technical results of the COVER projects as well as other related projects will be presented. The dissemination plan of COVER is described in COVER Deliverable D8 Dissemination Plan. That plan consists of four steps; 1) target audience identification; 2) development of the dissemination material; 3) identification of dissemination channels; 4) dissemination efforts for the various channels. 1.2 Report contents Chapter 2 gives an overview of the dissemination activities for M13 M24 as planned for in the dissemination plan of COVER Deliverable D8. Achievements are described in Chapter 3. This includes also achievements not directly listed in the plan of D8. Conclusions follow in chapter 4. 4/10
2 Dissemination Plan for M13 M24 (tools and publications) The table below lists all dissemination actions for COVER and the underlying projects as described in COVER D8. The table only refers to actions from M13 (April ) up to M24 (March 2011) related to the reporting period of this Deliverable D15. 7 3 Results Month 13 Month 24 This chapter presents the achievements of the COVER dissemination activities over the first year of the project (sections 3.1 through 3.7). Apart from those items listed in chapter 2 other achievements are included (section 3.8). 3.1 Workshop on exchange of PMHS data (COVER / THORAX / THOMO) As part of the COVER WP1 activities on Human data and injury risk curves (Task 1.3) a workshop was organised between THORAX and THOMO project partners to exchange results of PMHS tests done in both projects so far. The workshop was successfully organised with 24 representatives from partners from both projects. The tests done in both the projects, initial data analysis and HBM simulations were presented and discussed between the partners. Presentations were uploaded on the restricted areas of the project websites from THORAX and THOMO. The workshop has been summarized in COVER Deliverable D28: Report of 1st Workshop on PMHS data as input for the development of injury risk curves nd Technical Advisory Group Meeting (THORAX) The THORAX project organises annual advisory group meetings to inform and collect advice from external stakeholders. Representatives from EEVC, NHTSA (US), UVa, JAMA / JARI (Japan), Department for Transport (UK) are involved. The meetings are mostly organised in conjunction with the IRCOBI conference to facilitate participants to join the meeting. The second TAG meeting was held successfully in Hamburg in September. An important item for the meeting was the exchange on dummy developments between NHTSA and THORAX as well as alignment of plans contributing to the harmonisation of the dummy design. The TAG meeting in fact is the only tool currently existing for such harmonisation efforts on the THOR. The meeting was reported in THORAX D6.2 Project Dissemination Stakeholders meeting with TAG (2/4). 3.3 Paper and presentation on human modelling and human data (THORAX) THORAX activities on the human modelling and PMHS testing related to the influence of the ribcage geometry were presented at the 6th World Congress on Biomechanics August in Singapore. The presentation was done by INRETS under the title Characterization of the 3D Deformation of the Human Rib Cage for the Analysis of Injury Mechanism: An Experimental and Modelling Coupled Approach In addition to this presentation a paper on the WP1 accident surveys was prepared and accepted for the IRCOBI conference held in Hannover. The paper was prepared by TRL and other Wp1 partners under the title OVERVIEW OF SERIOUS THORAX INJURIES IN EUROPEAN FRONTAL CAR CRASH ACCIDENTS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR CRASH TEST DUMMY DEVELOPMENT. 3.4 Exhibition of Q10 dummy at Kind und Jugend (or alternatives) (EPOCh) At the Kind und Jugend fair (leading EU exhibition related to developments in child restraint systems) the Q10 dummy was displayed at the TRL booth. See picture below. The display at the Kind und Jugend was the first exposure of the Q10 dummy outside the EPOCh consortium. See figure Mid-term workshop on thoracic injuries (COVER / THORAX / THOMO) As part of the COVER WP2 activities a public workshop was organised presenting the results from the THORAX and THOMO projects to the automotive community. The workshop was 7/10
held in conjunction with the IRCOBI conference. It was joined by more than 50 participants from industry, governments, research groups and academia world-wide. The agenda included short introductions to COVER, THORAX and THOMO followed by detailed technical presentations on the PMHS testing, development of injury mechanisms including studies on the influence of the chest geometry (user diversity factor), human body modelling activities (also input from other projects outside THORAX and THOMO). Figure 1 Exhibition of Q10 in TRL stand at Kind und Jugend event. 3.6 Presentation of hardware at Protection of Children in Cars (EPOCh) The EPOCh effectively included an annual reporting of their activities to the leading conference on child safety being the Protection of Children in Cars conference. This annual conference is held in Munich and usually attracts over 150 attendees. In December the Q10 dummy design and prototyping was presented by Humanetics. Apart from the presentation a written paper was generated and included in the conference documentation. 3.7 Mid-term workshop on Child Safety (COVER / EPOCh / CASPER) In conjunction with the Protection of Children in Cars conference EPOCh and CASPER organised their mid-term workshop to present results achieved so far to the general public. Results of dummy developments, modelling activities, development of test procedures and sociological studies were presented to about 30 representatives from industry, governments and research / academia. 3.8 Stakeholders meetings In addition to the dissemination achievements above various stakeholder visits were arranged. These included: GRSP Informal Group on Frontal Impacts: Presentation of accident surveys from THORAX / THOMO and COVER to April meeting of this group. The relevance of user diversity was forwarded to the group indicating the risk of females compared to males. As a consequence of this study the Informal Group is now considering the introduction of a female dummy in front seats of future test procedures. Via the Informal Group on Frontal Impacts thee information on user diversities was also forwarded to the Euro NCAP working group on Frontal Impacts. Like the GRSP group
Euro NCAP will consider the inclusion of a female dummy in their future (2015) test protocols based on this info. GRSP Informal Group on Child Safety: many of the CASPER and EPOCh partners are directly involved in this Informal Group and information of both project is directly forwarded. Various meetings were joined. Based on the information provided the informal group is considering the use of the Q10 dummy as well as various dummy improvements proposed by CASPER. Euro NCAP Child Dummy Working Group: Information from CASPER and EPOCh are forwarded to the Child Dummy working group via COVER. This includes a reporting on the performance of the dummy developments as included under COVER task 2.2. under COVER. Based on the information provided the informal group is considering the use of the Q10 dummy as well as various dummy improvements proposed by CASPER The above mentioned fact that GRSP and Euro NCAP are now considering the inclusion of a 5 th female HIII dummy in future frontal test procedures is regarded as a key success of COVER. The same is true for the intended use of the Q10 dummy by both groups. 3.9 Other achievements With the information in sections 3.1 through 3.8 all achievements planned related to dissemination have been reached. Below some additional achievements are listed. The project public website has been set up for the general public and can be found at the web address: The website provides general information on the project objectives, the work to be performed, details of the project partners, overview of events in the field of Biomechanics including COVER workshop announcements, clear links to the underlying projects THORAX, THOMO, CASPER and EPOCh, executive summaries of reports from COVER and all the underlying projects, other public documentation like newsletters. Over the reporting period a continuous update of the project website was done, especially regarding events in the field of Biomechanics world-wide. Also workshop announcements and registrations were done via the COVER website (see section 3.5 and 3.7). documents like flyers and newsletters were made available via the website. During the reporting period another newsletter was released and distributed via the COVER dissemination database and website
4 Conclusions The COVER dissemination achievements over the period M13 M24 were presented. Dissemination in COVER is progressing well. All items as planned for the reporting period have been achieved. and closed workshops were held, papers generated and visits to stakeholders organised. A key result here is the fact that GRSP and Euro NCAP are considering the inclusion of a 5 th female HIII dummy in future frontal test procedures based on the accident surveys done in THORAX / THOMO and COVER. This is regarded as a key success of COVER forwarding the need to address user diversities as studies in EU FP research into future regulations. The same is true for the intended use of the Q10 dummy by both groups Page 10/10
