2 1 Safety precautions 1.1 Safety The instrument described in this manual is designed to be used by properly trained personnel only. Adjustment, maintenance and repair of the exposed equipment should be carried out only by qualified personnel aware of the hazards involved. 1.2 Safety precautions For correct and safe use of this instrument it is essential that both operation and service personnel follow generally accepted safety procedures in addition to the safety precautions specified in the manual. Specific warning and caution statements, where they apply, will be found throughout the manual. Safety is the responsibility of the user. Warning! The whole equipment works in high voltage environment and therefore all instructions and precautions which apply for such operations have to be considered working with the measuring instrument. 1.3 Impaired safety precautions Whenever it is likely that safety protection has been impaired, the instrument must be made inoperative and be secured against any unintended operation. The Resonating Inductor is an optional part of the FT-12, C -tan delta measuring system. The inductor can compensate the capacitive current of the test object and this way make possible to test higher capacitor than 53 nf. The span of the inductance value is from 380 Henry to 7 Henry and with it, it can compensate min. 50 nf, maximum 1 F. The allowed maximal voltage on the Inductor is 12 kv rms, The maximal current is 4.5 A. Manual_FT12Drossel-Englisch.DOC / KF/ Page 3 of 8

4 2.1 Design of the Inductor The inductor is an AC - iron core coil with air gap. The air gap is adjustable by a diving core. The diving core is moved by a trapezoid spindle. The resonance - state is detected by an AC ammeter, measuring the current flowing in the HV transformer. A brake can block the movement of the core and by it reduce the mechanical vibration of the diving core. A thermo switch protects the inductor of overheating. Operation Make a test set up according the example in the principle schematics (Fig. 1): Warning: Although the instrument is safe, there is no protection against certain application errors and carelessness. In case of unsteadiness please consult a senior specialist instead of damaging the test object or the instrument. 1. Connect the connector "GROUND" to the GROUND connector of FT-12HV using the delivered green- yellow cable. 2. Connect the "GUARD" connector to the GUARD connector of the FT-12HV unit. 3. Connect the "INTL1" connector to the "SAFETY" connector of the FT-12CTR unit. 4. Connect the INTL2 connector to the manual Interlock Cable with the push-button. 8 5. Connect the "HV1" connector by the 2 meter HV Lemo cable to the HV connector of FT- 12HV. 6. Connect the HV cable of delivered with FT-12 to the HV terminal of the test object. If the expected current is higher then 1 A, replace the connection head with crocodile head. 7. Look at Resonating Inductor Tuning Table at the in the inner side of the cover: Resonating Inductor Tuning Table L/H C/nF Scale If you know the expected value of the capacitance of the object to test, position the wheell (8) to this value, set HV from the system to approx. 1 kv and let the FT-12 balance. 9. If you don't have any idea of the capacitances, adjust the wheel (8) to position "1", give some lower voltage e.g. 1 kv) and balance the bridge. 10. Turn the wheel up to a minimum deflection of the ammeter (7) and at the same time observe the "Ix" display on the FT-12CTR. Ix must be minimum. 11. Close the Brake 12. Go to the prescribed test voltage and note C and tan delta. If you increase the voltage, the inductance changes slightly. It can happen, that you have to readjust the wheel (8) to find a better resonance. In this case, open the brake carefully, because the inductor will be vibrating, and try to find a better resonance.
