The live transmission demonstration and other display cases were finally ready, and the booth was all set to welcome visitors on the opening day of the Exhibition. The highlights of the booth this year was PETRA s own contribution of On Board Optics transmitter and receiver integrated on board with FPGA in the live transmission demonstration, a 12 channel receiver module, a chip-to-chip optical connector interface, and other technological advances such as polymer waveguide, etc. developed in-house, or with other partners (Sumitomo Bakelite) built into the display pieces. Also on display were two other applications, a storage controller device and a detachable optical engine module that were developed in collaboration with Seagate Technology and Kyocera Corporation, respectively. The exhibits not only showcased PETRA s in-house capability, but also demonstrated PETRA s reach and ability to jointly develop applications with international partners and collaborators well known in the industry. 3 Based on 2015 experience, we were expecting a lot of visitors this year as well. On the inauguration day of the exhibition, Prof. Arakawa s plenary talk provided a very timely advertisement for the Si-photonics technology displayed at the PETRA booth. The booth was visited by former partners, and new visitors from USA and other countries to explore potential partnership/collaboration with PETRA. PETRA exhibits also attracted curious visitors who just stopped by. Many were captivated by the exhibits and wanted to explore collaborative work, or simply get the Si-photonics I/O chip. The visitors included former partners, researchers from government, corporate and private institutions who are interested in learning about new frontiers in optical components, and also system developers and packaging houses who understand the technology and wanted to develop applications jointly. The visitors also included competitors who just wanted to snoop for the inside information disguised in clever questions. All this was possible because the live technology demonstrations performed flawlessly without failure for all three days and was professionally supported with exceptional technical expertise of PETRA engineers. Further support for PETRA s technical prowess was provided by presentations in workshop, symposium and technical sessions. PETRA booth attracted more than two hundred fifty visitors. That number does not reflect about visitors, who did not want their information to be scanned and those who were discouraged to step in by the large number of visitors already at the booth at any given time. Many visitors from the last year revisited, and others who discovered PETRA this year visited repeatedly bringing their peers along with them. In the words of one visitor- you guys are ahead of all in Si-photonics business. Page 3 of 5

Undoubtedly, PETRA booth was the star of the Japanese Pavilion. There was a lot of energy on the show floor with more than 13,000 registered participants this year.

Silicon photonics is surely entering the commercialization phase. The interest level in working with PETRA was quite high and in many case with an urgent note. Ciena (Canada), Arista (US), Xilinx (US), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), Celestica (Canada), Molex (US), Credo Semiconductor (US), Rockport Networks Inc. (Canada) and Applied Optoelectronics Inc. are identified as potential new partners/collaborators. We will follow up on these leads. Depending on how fast PETRA can get production volume, some priority for follow-up has to be determined. We initiated a dialogue with Jabil Industries; the contact was established in another meeting. We also had a meeting with Samtec to finalize details for moving forward with the evaluation boards (separate report). In moving forward, the questions to be addressed urgently are- a. PETRA or individual partners be the contact point for business and/or IP, b. Roadmap for production volume and schedule, c. When and how can one buy chips, Page 4 of 5

5 d. Cost of chips and/or cost sharing model for application development in partnership, e. Terms, conditions and formalities and in particular IP formalities, for partnerships with industries outside Japan, and f. Information about partnering suppliers and foundries.
