3 Today s Opportunities: -Micro-opticsoptics an enabling technology with a large societal impact: - Potential for a multitude of new applications to improve the quality of life - Potential economical benefits for industry - Potential increase of employment on all levels - Through structuring and integration: More efficient use of research resources Consolidate and strengthen EU leadership Service to industry; providing a leading edge Increase of European industr ustr. competitiveness -Develop µo O technologies for next decade Materials for µo Design and modelling of µo Fabrication technologies for µo Replication technologies for µo Applications with µo Structuring, Integration and Scientific collaboration in µo provide important opportunities for improving industrial competitiveness and quality of life Today s Threats & Consequences: Missing the opportunities offered by the new NoE instrument of 6 th FP or unsuccessful in structuring and integration -Loss of competitiveness of European industry -Gradual loss of exisiting market enabled by µo -Loss of emerging and potential market -Gigantic market goes to US, Japan, China -Loosing decades of know-how and expertise -Missed opportunity to establish a European technology and industry : MICRO-OPTICS OPTICS -Europe will then again have shown that it can be creative and inventive, but that it cannot bring its knowledge to the market. EXIT MICRO-OPTICS OPTICS EUROPE and EXIT ALL RELATED TECHNOLOGIES and MARKETS NEMO is needed as a catalyst; as an enabler; as a guide to industry, and as the developer of the next generations «micro-optics»
