25 22. PhotoTune 3 Home > PhotoTune 3 > Using PhotoTune > Using the Wizard Better Images, Step-by-Step PhotoTune 3 is a patented color correction system that quickly and easily fixes an image s dynamic range, exposure, and color balance. Color is by far the most difficult and important aspect of the correction process. The Wizard will dramatically speed up the correction process. Like an eye exam, your response to each step determines the direction of all subsequent steps. The first step is used to set dynamic range. Step two offers automatic color correction and step three adjusts the brightness. The following steps determine a color correction. More steps are required in the color section due to the complexity of color balance. Finally you have the option to add sharpness to your image. Here s our best advice for making appropriate choices for each step: Relax and have fun, PhotoTune will do most of the work for you. Don t over-analyze. Your first impression is usually your best choice. Choose vibrant, pleasing colors. A flat, dull appearance is usually a bad sign. Consider the overall appearance first, and then check important areas like a face, or an area that should be a neutral gray. Move the slider up and down to help decide which preview is better The steps you take through the Wizard will vary depending on whether your image has people in it or not. It will also vary if you use the automatic color option versus the step wise process. Below is brief flow chart explaining the different wizard paths. It may look complicated but you don't need to remember it, it will take you down the right path every time based on your selections.

27 24. PhotoTune 3 Home > PhotoTune 3 > Using PhotoTune > Adjusting Tone Adjusting Tone The Tone Mode of the Pro Interface is for adjusting the tonality of image. The tonality is made up of the dynamic range, the brightness and contrast of the image. The controls for Tone are located in the Tone pane. The controls are: Brightness: Controls the overall lightness or darkness of the image. You can adjust it with the slider in the Tone pane or just move the preview image up or down with the move tool. Its best to adjust the Dynamic Range Enhancement before adjusting the brightness. Contrast: Controls the overall contrast, or how strong the brightest and darkest tones in the image are. An image that lacks contrast will have little or no true whites or blacks. Contrast can be controlled in the Tone pane or by sliding the preview image left or right with the select tool. It is best to adjust the Dynamic Range Enhancement before adjusting the contrast. Dynamic Range Enhancement: Unique to PhotoTune 3, the Dynamic Range Enhancement slider adjusts the amount of tonal compression in the image. It will reveal information hidden in the shadows as well as adjust the global and local contrast of the image. Essentially it remaps the tones in the image to appear more true to life, like you saw when you pressed the shutter. High values of 50-90% are good for landscape images. Lower settings of 20-50% are ideal for portrait images. This is the first control to adjust when starting to work on your image. Fill Light: Fill light will help bring details out in the shadows. Generally only low amounts are required after using the Dynamic Range Enhancement. Recovery: Recovery reduces the lightness of the brightest whites in the image. This can be useful for reducing overexposed areas. Clarity: Clarity is used to increase local contrast which will make the image "pop" without sacrficing the highlight or shadow detail. Clarity only effects the tonal difference along edges in the image. Punch: Punch produces a similar look to clarity but also increases color saturation at the same time. A flat digital image will look more like it was photographed on film with a little extra punch. onone Software uses patented eye-fidelity TM technology, originally developed by and licensed from imsense. imsense has developed and patented breakthrough algorithms to solve the problem of Dynamic Range Correction in standard and HDR images. eye-fidelity renders images faithful to the image the eye saw. It ensures that detail is revealed whilst maintaining colour balance and integrity and the deliberate effects, such as region highlighting, employed by the photographer. eye-fidelity technology is unmatched for the speed, quality and versatility of its output. 29 26. PhotoTune 3 Home > PhotoTune 3 > Using PhotoTune > Adjusting Color Adjusting Color The Color Mode of the Pro interface is used to removal color casts as well as adjust the overall color and for converting the image to black and white. In the preview area, the image is floating on top of a color wheel. By simply dragging the image with the select tool (you can also use the arrow keys) you can influence the color in that direction. This provides a fast and intuitive way to adjust the color of your image. For example if your image has a cool color cast like the image above does, just slide the image in the opposite direction, in this case up. The beauty of color correcting inside of the color wheel is it prevents you from creating unrealistic color adjustments buy affecting more than adjacent colors. In real life, a color cast will only be in a singe direction in the color wheel. In the example image above, the color cast is primarily cyan but may have a green or blue influence as well. It can not have a cyan - magenta or cyan - yellow cast as no such cast could exist, they would be a blue or green cast instead. This prevents you from making unrealistic or incorrect adjustments that are possible in other color correction tools. The remaining controls are located in the Color pane. It contains the following controls: Auto Cast Removal Toggle: This toggles the automatic removal of a color cast. In many cases the auto cast removal may be the only adjustment needed in the color pane. However on some images you may want to manually make further adjustments. Color or Black and White Toggle: PhotoTune can also create great looking black and white versions of image. Simply flip the toggle to black and white. You can then move the image around the preview space to alter the tone via color, just like using a colored filter over your lens on your camera. For portrait images, try moving the image in the green direction. For landscape images try a warm color from red to yellow. Color Sliders: The color sliders represent the six cardinal colors that you also see in the preview area. Even though all six color sliders are visible, only two may be used at any time. This is designed to prevent incorrect color correction technique. Generally moving the preview image inside the color wheel is the best way to adjust the color. You can use the arrow keys on your keyboard for small adjustments or the sliders to fine tune your settings. Vibrance: Vibrance controls how strong, or saturated your colors are. Think of this like the Color control on your television. The vibrance slider starts in the middle and can increase or decrease the color in your image. Gray Purity: Gray purity is actually made up of two controls the Gray Purity slider and the Threshold slider. This tool allows you to remove subtle color casts from near gray areas. This is great for shadows that may have a cross-color contamination or for wedding dresses. To use it, start by setting the gray purity to about 50%, then adjust the threshold up until the cast is reduced. Then adjust the amount of reduction with the Gray purity slider. Neutral Color Dropper: The neutral dropper is used by clicking on areas of the image that should be neutral gray. The really unique about the neutral dropper is that you can click on multiple areas of your image and it will average them to create a compound color correction. For example if your image has an overall cool cast but the shadows have a stronger cast than the rest of the image you could click in the midtones, then the shadows and it will color correct the different tonal ranges at the same time.

31 28. PhotoTune 3 Home > PhotoTune 3 > Using PhotoTune > Adjusting Skin Color Adjusting Skin Color How SkinTune Works Correcting skin color is one of the most daunting, and time-consuming tasks professional photographers face every day. The problem is that the range of acceptable skin color is very, very limited, and it varies slightly for different races. We spent years studying skin color, and collecting thousands of sample images from around the world. Then, we took precise spectrophotometer measurements and compiled a complete reference database of acceptable colors. What we discovered is that skin color represents less than half of 1% of all available colors. So, it s no wonder that correction is such a difficult process. Our next step was to construct complete libraries for different races, including African, Asian, Caucasian, Latin, and Middle Eastern. Each library contains between 120,000 and 150,000 colors made up of different combinations of hue, brightness, and saturation, based on the unique characteristics of each race. Using SkinTune The SkinTune mode of the Pro interface is used for correcting color casts in portrait images. It is the fastest way to get pleasing skin color, simply use the dropper tool to click on the subjects skin in the Left preview image. Then the images color will be corrected instantly by comparing the source color to libraries of hundreds of thousands of properly color corrected skin color samples based on ethnicity. Once you click on your original image, you can use the move tool to adjust the warmth of the image or shift the skin color based on personal preference. The controls for SkinTune are located in the SkinTune panel and are detailed below. Skin Dropper:The dropper tool is selected by default when you switch to SkinTune mode. Use it to click on a mid-tone are of the subjects skin. You can click on different spots to change the color correction. As you hover over the image, you can see the change in color previewed in the navigator. Ethnicity Pop-up: Selects which ethnicity libraries are used. The default is "All" which contains averages from all ethnicities. You can also select a specific ethnicity from the pop-up for more accurate results. Correct Skin Only: This toggle will limit the color correction to only the skin colors of the image. Generally this is not needed, as the color cast on your subject is often the same as the color cast on the rest of the scene. It is useful if your subject is being lit by a different light than your background. Fade: The fade slider controls the overall strength of the color correction. If you find that the default value is too strong, try reducing it by increasing the fade slider. Warmth: The warmth control can be thought of as a saturation control as well. It controls how warm, or vivid the skin color is. Many consumer digital cameras produce over saturated skin color, by reducing the warmth slightly you can create more natural looking skin color. You can also adjust the warmth by moving the preview image up or down using the move tool or the up and down arrow keys. Tip: When using the dropper tool it is important to click on a midtone, or properly exposed area of the subjects skin. Selecting a highlight or shadow may cause an incorrect adjustment. If your image contains multiple subjects, even of different ethnicities, you only need to sample one skin color as the color cast across both subjects is the same. Note: The color corrections from SkinTune are applied before the color corrections made in the Color mode. It is best to use SkinTune before using the Color mode controls.

33 30. PhotoTune 3 Home > PhotoTune 3 > Using PhotoTune > Adjusting Detail Adjusting Detail The Detail Mode of the Pro Interface is for adjusting the sharpness of image. The sharpening tools in PhotoTune are designed to help bring focus to images that are not natively sharp. The sharpening in PhotoTune only effects the luminosity, or detail of the image and does not effect the color. The controls for sharpness are located in the Detail pane. The controls are: On/Off Toggle: This toggle enables the sharpening effect. Sharpening: This Sharpening slider determines the amount of sharpening. Generally an amount of is best more most images. You can also adjust the sharpening amount by sliding the preview image left and right. Don't Sharpen Shadows: When enabled, this prevents the sharpening effect from being applied to the shadow tones of an image, reducing the sharpening of noise. Don't Sharpen Highlights: When enabled, this prevents the sharpening effect from being applied to the highlight tones of an image, reducing the sharpening of noise in the sky as well as scanned negative film. Don't Sharpen Skin: When enabled, this prevents the sharpening of effect from being applied to the skin color range of an image, based on the color selected in the SkinTune mode. Tips: 1. The Don't Sharpen Skin option will only be enabled after using SkinTune. 2. Avoid using the sharpening in PhotoTune at high amounts, it is designed to bring back some lost sharpness to the image, but not for final sharpening for output. Final sharpening should only be done after the image has been resized for output and all other work is done. 34 PhotoTune Home > PhotoTune 3 > Using PhotoTune > Using Snapshots Using Snapshots The Snapshot button (camera), is located in the toolbar under the preview images. You can record up to four Snapshots in addition to the Wizard Snapshot. After that, you will be prompted to replace a Snapshot whenever you make a new Snapshot. A Snapshot makes a temporary copy of any state of the image, and lets you work from that point forward. In this way, you can experiment, or compare different effects while retaining a copy of your previous edits. For example, you can make changes and tweak colors, take a snapshot, and then display and compare different versions side-by-side. Then, take another Snapshot any time you have made an improvement, so you can recover your work easily. Just select a Snapshot from righthand pop-up menu to recall the previous saved version. When a Snapshot is selected from the right-hand pop-up menu, the sliders are updated to reflect the adjustments saved with the Snapshot. Only the righthand preview can be edited. Displaying Snapshots in the left-hand preview are for display purposes only. Managing Snapshots Every time you make a Snapshot, it is listed in both pop-up menus located under the preview images. You can use the pop-up menus to display any combination of Snapshots you d like. Only the preview image on the right can be edited and altered with the sliders. Whenever a Snapshot is displayed on the right, the sliders are updated to show the recorded adjustments that were saved with the Snapshot. You could load Snapshots on both the left and right, so you can compare two images side-by-side while you make changes. If you make changes to a Snapshot, and then switch to a different Snapshot, PhotoTune will ask if you want to save the changes before you switch. If you want to make a new Snapshot, and you ve used up your allotment of 4 Snapshots, PhotoTune will ask you which of the current Snapshots you want to replace. Typical Workflow Like everything in PhotoTune, Snapshot is designed to speed up the correction process. Snapshot is a safety net that lets you continue experiment with different combinations without losing your previous edits. Take a Snapshot whenever you want to preserve a set of correction parameters so you can continue experimenting with impunity. Here s a typical workflow using Snapshot: 1. If you use the Wizard, a Snapshot is automatically taken (Wizard Snapshot). 2. Fine-Tune the results obtained by the Wizard. 3. Take a Snapshot to record your adjustments. 4. Then experiment some more, and make another Snapshot. 5. Use the pop-up menus to compare different Snapshots. 6. Save History if you want to reuse your changes on a future image, or click Apply to process the changes shown in the right-hand preview. 35 32. PhotoTune 3 Home > PhotoTune 3 > Using PhotoTune > Using Presets Using Presets Presets record all of the adjustments you make to an image in PhotoTune. To open a category, click on the disclosure triangle to the left of the category title. When you mouse over a preset, its settings can be previewed on your image in the Navigator. Also if you linger over a preset, the author and description will be displayed in the tool-tip. Using a Preset To use a preset, simply double-click on it. It will adjust all of the image settings to match what was stored in the preset. You can use these presets inside of: PhotoTune from the Presets Pane Inside of Photoshop from the onone Panel or onone Menu Inside of Lightroom and Aperture from the PhotoTune dialog Creating a Preset Saving a preset is simple. Once you have everything set the way you like, go to the File menu and select Save Preset. You can also press the plus icon located in the bottom of the Preset pane. The New Preset dialog will appear. There are several fields to complete including the preset name, the category, creator and description. In the category pull-down you can select which existing category the preset should saved into. You can also create a new category this way by selecting new category from the bottom of the list. You can edit a preset's name, creator, description or keywords by selecting it and then right-clicking on it and selecting edit preset. If you want to edit the effects in a preset, load it into your stack, make your adjustments and then resave the preset with the same name and location. PhotoTune 3 automatically saves presets called Recently Used, which save all the settings you used the last six times you applied. Deleting a Preset To delete a preset, just select the preset by single-clicking it, then press the minus icon in the bottom of the preset pane. 36 PhotoTune Home > PhotoTune 3 > Using PhotoTune > Preferences Preferences The PhotoTune preferences control many important aspects of the software. Preferences are persistent, like a switch and maintain their settings until you change them. You can access the Preferences from the Photoshop menu on a Mac OS X system or the Edit menu on a Windows system. Apply PhotoTune to: The Apply PhotoTune to options controls what layer information is sent to PhotoTune for processing. The options are a copy of the current layer or the current layer. Option Copy of Current Layer: Creates a copy of the current layer and returns the results of PhotoTune to that layer, placed above the original target layer. This option will duplicate an existing layer mask. Current Layer: Applies the results of PhotoTune directly to the image layer itself. When to Use Use this option if want to maintain your original layer with no changes to it. This is the default setting. Use this option if you are working on a 16-bit image or if you want to keep your image flattened. You can always undo PhotoTune if you don't like its results. Preferences will take affect until the next time you open PhotoTune.
