An introduction
Are you a lighting designer?
You are on your way to understanding lighting design.
What do you think the lighting designer s job includes?
The Functions of Light 1.
2. Focus
3. Information/source
4. Mood
5. Modeling
6.
Controllable Qualities of Light 1)Intensity 2)Color 3)Direction 4)Distribution 5) Texture 6) Movement
Intensity

Color
Filters (known as gels) - Every color emits different wavelengths - Filters absorb all wavelengths except the desired emitted color - Filters range in saturation

Direction - Front - Side - Down - Back
Front Front 45
Side High Side
Down Back

Distribution Sharp
Diffused

Texture (Gobos)

Movement - Lighting cues - Change in intensity - Change in color - Change in texture - Change in direction - Change in distribution - Change of mood - Change of audience focus O1w
What mood does this lighting create?
What qualities do you see here?
Direction, distribution, intensity?
Remember you are telling a story!
The Lighting Designer s Process 1) Analysis - Read the script for enjoyment and initial response. DON T OVER THINK IT THE FIRST TIME THROUGH! - Read the script again to start writing down location, time, and specific lighting needs for the show. - Read the script to dig for the deeper meaning, themes, and purpose. *** As a designer the more you read the script the better you can tell the story through your concept.
The Lighting Designer s Process 2) Research - Research anything and everything that can help you move forward with your design - Location - Era - Weather - The play themes - Colors that represent your characters - Art that emotes how you feel about the play - Lighting moods - Anything and everything that will help you build your concept. Don t think inside of a box. There is no box when it comes to creation.
The Lighting Designer s Process 3) Design Meetings - Collaborate with director and fellow designers. - Show director all visual research - Assure that you are on the right path with your ideas - Make sure your concept helps tell the story and coincides with the concept the director has chosen - With a clearer vision of the entire show, continue research.
The Lighting Designer s Process 4) Finalizing your concept Concept should include; - What you are trying to accomplish with your lights. - What affect your lights have on the story. - What design elements you will use (Color, texture, distribution, direction, etc. ) - Why you have made these choices.
The Lighting Designer s Process 5) Creating Light Keys - Recreating a visual look - Based off of your research - Should include the direction and color of the light

Let s create a light key for this image;
The Lighting Designer s Process 6) Paperwork - From lighting keys we create a plot - A completed lighting package includes all the information that an Assistant Lighting Designer, Master Electrician, Production Manager, and Technical Director would need to make the show happen. - Plot (Electrics, deck view, section view) - Instrument schedule - Channel Hookup - Dimmer Hookup - Gel and template schedule - Magic sheet - Cue sheet - Spot cue sheet
The Lighting Designer s Process 7) Cueing the show a) Create cues for the entire show - Include changes in movement, color, intensity, focus, etc. b) Designer s use magic sheets to make cueing quick and easy - A magic sheet groups all of the similar instruments by color and purpose c) Cue sheets should include - The cue number - The location in the script; page number, character, line, and/or movement - Description of the cue - Some designers also include time (up fade, down fade, and follow timing)
