Reference the Diode Pointer Specifications located on our website. Introduction: The diode pointer provides a safety measure by enabling operators to monitor the location of the CO 2 beam. The diode pointer contains a ZnSe beam combiner that merges the two wavelengths of light into one. The adjustable diode can be centered for near field coincidence while the combiner angle is adjustable for the far field coincidence. The pointer is shipped with both near and far field adjustments set approximately to their nominal positions. If your SYNRAD laser is shipped with a Diode Pointer installed, it is pre-aligned and ready for operation. 1. Upon arrival, inspect all shipping containers for signs of damage. If you discover shipping damage, document the damage (photographically if possible), then immediately notify the shipping carrier (responsible party for any transportation damage) and SYNRAD. See the inventory section with in the Introduction chapter of the Operation Manual for packaging list(s). Important Notes: Keep All Foam and Packaging, you will need to re-use it when moving your unit to prevent damage that could void your warranty. Refer to this guide and the Technical Reference chapters in the laser s Operation Manual when re-packaging for shipping and/or relocation. Remove all accessory items not originally attached (if applicable) prior to re-packaging for shipping. Series 48 lasers manufactured after August 1998 provide a Diode Pointer power connector on the faceplate. All others, use the supplied wall-plug transformer power supply. Installation Preparation: 2. The following tools and Hardware are required for Diode Pointer Installation. One 1/4 open end ignition wrench Two 1/8 Allen hex wrenches (included) Four 8-32 x 1/4 hex head screws (included) Thermal image cards Fire brick or equivalent stable beam stop 1 QSG Diode Pointer Ver 2.0

2 Diode Pointer Quick Start Guide Installation: 3. Insert the four 8-32 x 1/4 hex head screws into the front of the laser a few turns so that the threads are engaged. Allow at least 1/8 clearance between the screw head and the laser s front plate to hang the diode pointer on the laser s faceplate. See the figure below. Once the pointer mounting plate is hung over the heads of the screws, assure access to both the near and far field adjuster screws with an Allen hex wrench is possible. Tighten the four screws with the 1/4 ignition wrench. 5. To power the Diode Pointer, connect the supplied power cable between the 5 VDC jack on the side of the pointer and the laser s diode pointer power connector. If your laser does not provide a power connection for the Diode Pointer, use the plug from the supplied wall-plug transformer into the 5 VDC jack on the side of the pointer. Warning Serious personal injury Do not stare directly into the red laser light emitted from the Diode Pointer. The light is intense enough to injure the eye with exposure. Always wear eye protection! CO2 laser emits invisible laser radiation. Since direct or diffuse laser radiation can inflict severe corneal injuries. Remain clear of the beam while performing adjustments; direct or diffuse laser radiation can seriously burn human tissue. 2 QSG Diode Pointer Ver 2.0

4 Diode Pointer Quick Start Guide Adjustment: The adjustment process consists of two types; coarse (or larger movements) and fine (or smaller adjustments). Coarse adjustments gets your diode pointer and laser in the same general area, within 0.1 mm, and is accomplished by loosening the (4) mounting screws and moving the pointer up, down, left and/or right. Fine adjustments, 0.1 mm or less, are made by: (1) Adjusting the near field diode position coincident with near field CO2 beam and once that is accomplished. (2) Adjusting the far field diode position coincident with the far field CO2 beam (3) testing. 7. Assure the diode pointer cover is removed. Tape a thermal card to the firebrick (beam block) and place it about 30 cm in front of the pointer. Far Field Distance Approx m (1 of 1). 5 Adjustment (Continued): 8. Fire the CO 2 laser at low power (approximately watts) for a long enough time to get a good burn image on the thermal card. 9. If the red diode beam is centered on the burn within 0.1 mm proceed to the next step for fine adjustment for the far field, until the red diode beam is centered in the middle of the CO 2 burn. If not, make further coarse adjustments to the beam position by loosening the four hex head screws holding the pointer to the laser and moving the pointer in the direction necessary to center the beam in the CO 2 burn. If the pointer is all the way to its limit in the slots, it may be necessary to rotate the mounting plate in relation to the pointer housing. To do this, remove the pointer from the laser and remove the two socket head cap screws holding the mounting plate to the pointer body. Rotate the mounting plate 180 degrees then reinstall and tighten the two screws. Reinstall the pointer to the front of the laser and repeat the coarse then fine adjustment until the pointer is secured in a position where the red diode beam is roughly centered on the CO 2 burn image. IF further coarse adjustment needed: Loosen the screws holding mounting plate to pointer. Rotate the pointer mounting plate 180: re-tighten the screws holding mounting plate to pointer. Re-install and tighten the two screws. Warning Serious personal injury Always wear safety goggles. Always use shielded cable when connecting your PWM Command signal source to PWM Positive/PWM Negative inputs. Never stare into a laser beam! 5 QSG Diode Pointer Ver 2.0

Reposition the thermal card to a new location on the brick, then move the brick to the far field (3-10 m) Fire the CO 2 laser again at low power (approximately watts) until you get a good burn image on the thermal card. Adjust both far field screws (see prior figures) on the Diode Pointer so that the red diode beam is centered on the CO 2 burn image as accurately as possible. Average out any beam asymmetries of the diode. 11. Move the brick back to the near-field position and repeat the near field procedure in step M B Far field Approx. 3-10m Important Note: Since adjusting the beam affects both near and far fields in the same direction, you may need to overcompensate towards the opposite side of center in one field and then bring both back to center in the other. Repeat step 7-10 once more. The goal of the adjustment procedure is to get the CO 2 beam and the Diode Pointer coincident within 100 microradians, which is equivalent to 1 mm in 10 meters as the recommended outside tolerance of alignment. Anything more precise and accurate is desireable, but not necessary. Final accuracy and precision alignment is completely dependent on the final use of the pointer. Most articulated arm applications require 100 microradians, while a simple lens system requires only 1 milliradian. The outside tolerance or acceptable misalignment is 1 milliradian, or 1 mm in 1 meter. Congratulations!
