1 TGA Lighting Handbook V1.0 1) Concepts of stage lighting Most important things: 1) you need to be able to see the actors 2) What you are doing has to look good on stage. Areas of acting. How to divide the stage. Use areas and lights to create different environments. Use lights to attract the eyes of the audience and to focus towards what you want them to see. Lighting helps to reinforce time and place. You are able to control lighting intensity, color, and transition speed. Intensity helps determine: 1) what you want people to focus in 2) The environment in which the scene happens Transition speed: Make sure to balance your changes, and to avoid transitions that are too sudden. The eyes get tired. Angles of lighting: Front, sides, back. Front diagonal top: Most used. From 2 sides. Lights both sides. Front top: Projects light downwards. Creates a lot of shadow on the floor. Front straight: Follow spot. Shadow on walls. Side top: Cenital/spotlight. Creates shadow towards the floor and on the face. Spooky. Front/side bottom: creates shadow towards ceiling and on face. Back lights: Create contrast. Commonly used with colors. Make actors pop put from scenery. Creates shadow towards front. Dramatic. 2) Concepts of color usage Color serves to change the environments. Examples. Cold colors vs warm colors. Cold colors (blue, white, green, purple) are associated with night and calm. Warm colors (red, yellow, orange, pink) convey feelings of joy and vitality. Best color for skin are amber, lavender, light pink. Color mixing, RGB. Gels, LEDS. 3) Types of light fixtures NEVER TOUCH BULB WITH BARE HANDS.

2 Fresnel (12): 500W bulb in a can. Push and twist. Reflector in the back. Concentric circles diffuse the light. Clamps and grill. Generally used for front light. Change bulb by twisting. Source 4 PAR (5): 575W bulb. Parabolic lens. Standard gel holder. Used for front light. Change bulb by unscrewing back. Source 4 Leko (7): 575W or 750W bulb (same as s4par). 3 lens angles (26, 75, 90 (the guild s 90 degree lamp has a 750W bulb)). Includes flags. Adjust lens with screws. Used from front / sides, or as backing light. Mini leko (8): 75W small spot MR16. Used from top down, of for focusing certain areas. Change bulb by unscrewing back. Mini par (3): 75W small flood Par30. Change bulb by unscrewing. Ministrips (4): 35W bulbs 12v MR11 in sequence. Can have multiple colors and multiple channels. Used as backing light. Pin spot (10): 30W small spot. LED light (4): white lights that can change color. Color can be remotely controlled. PAR 64 can (6): 600W bulb. Parabolic lens. Cage to protect bulb. Unfocused. Brighter center. Change bulb by removing front. 4) Other lighting accessories Safety chains: Serve to tie the lamp in case the clamp fails. Clamps: Serve to tie the lamp to the pole. Types of plugs: Edison, 3way. We do not use 3way. Barn doors: Serve to flag off sections of the light. Included in the LEKO. Use with fresnels, source 4 pars. Top hats: Serve to block off light. Use with fresnels, source 4 pars. Gel holders: Put colors in lights. Gobos and gobo holders: Put patterns in lekos. Iris: Like top hat for leko. Tiny flags: for spots. Extension cord: For length. Glow tape: Used onstage to mark positions in darkness. Place somewhere where it can be charged by stage lights. Plug tester: Used to make sure a plug works.

3 5) How to hang lights How to aim the area of acting you are looking for. Near/far. How to attach clamp, hang light, apply safety chain, focus. Connect to ceiling. Ceiling plugs are numbered. Numbers correspond to cables in lighting room, which are then connected to the dimmer packs, which are controlled by the console. Dimmer load 1200 watt maximum per channel. Do not turn dimmer on without first turning console on and connecting signal cable. If a dimmer channel is overloaded, you have to change the fuse. How to change dimmer fuses: TURN OFF DIMMER, open cap, remove fuse with plier, insert new fuse. Use 10amp fuse. 6) How to program lights THE MANUAL IS YOUR FRIEND Channel A lights, Channel B subs How to program submasters: Bring lights up in channel A, press record, press corresponding submaster button. 16 Submaster pages. How to build a cue stack: Press Record Cue Stack, organize the submasters in the desired order. Chases: Press record chase and record the steps with channel A faders. Can add to cue stack or activate manually with chase button. Rate lever to control speed. 7) How to run a show Press the stack button and go to the corresponding stack. Press the go button to go to the next cue. You can use the step button and the wheel to skip cues or to back to previous cues. 8) Misc / other Guild has 2 lighting boards. One has faulty channel A faders, the other one has finicky buttons, Fader B- 21 does not work and master A fader is faulty. Use 2 left faders with it to control light. Try to only use fixtures with Edison plugs. Ask Dean to give you more plugs if you need them. Fixtures with Edison plugs: 1-20, , 47-52, Ceiling plugs 7, 8 and 10, 11 are in the front bar. House lights are par28. Side lights are par 16.

4 Bulbs locally available: Par16, Par28, Par30 (Lumicentro): For the House lights, the Mini PAR and the side lights. MR16, MR11 (Novey): For the mini lekos and the ministrips. If a light or dimmer breaks, take it to Dean or Electrónica Japonesa in Via Brasil. Current dimmers channels 8, 24 do not work. Do not use. Order of setup: Plug in console to power and signal cables, turn on console, then turn on breakers for dimmers. Order of storage: Turn off breakers for dimmers, unplug console, store.
