5 EID Guidelines for Monthly Themes September, Architecture can be a stately Craftsman home around the corner, a shed in your backyard, or an age-old cathedral. Perhaps there's an interesting building or museum you've visited. Think construction sites, bridges, escalators, stairways, or any details of a man-made structure (including windows, doors, roofs). People can also be in the photo, as long as architecture is dominantly portrayed. (No "natural" architecture such as arches or rock formations for this category, please. The structure or detail must be man made.) October, Lines can be actual or implied. They are linear forms in which length dominates over width. Wherever we see the edge of an object, it can be perceived as a line. Actual lines can be straight, curved, jagged, colored, soft or hard. Implied lines suggest visual connections between a series of objects or forms. Picture a pencil drawing of your scene to more fully appreciate its' "line" qualities. Although all images have lines, lines should be a dominate feature of your image. November, Humor is a comic, absurd, or incongruous quality causing amusement. It can be subtle or blatant. You know: it's a funny picture! December, Waterfalls are steep, vertical falls or a flow of water in a watercourse from a height, as over a precipice; cascade. January, A sense of Motion can be achieved by depicting actual or implied changes in position. Slow shutter speeds can capture the blur of motion. Fast shutter speeds can freeze motion in a way that allows us to see different aspects of motion. Merged action sequences or the rhythmic repetition or moving elements (i.e. legs) may capture a sense of motion. Motion blur filters in Photoshop may be used to emphasize real or implied motion. Fountains, kites, flags, runners, airplanes, flowing water commonly represent motion. February, Panoramic photography is often used to capture landscapes or city skylines. It gives a wide perspective to a scene and captures vastness in an image, which is not often shown by a solitary shot. Although a panoramic view is usually thought of on a horizontal perspective, like in landscapes, the photographic technique can also be used to create a panoramic effect from a vertical perspective. For example, if you are standing quite close to a skyscraper building and would like to capture the towering beauty of the structure, you could use the same technique, but instead of panning horizontally, you will be orienting the camera vertically. With most photo editing software (and sometimes with camera settings) it is now possible to "stitch" together images taken to form a consolidated panoramic image. However, those without software may also crop an image to achieve the same effect. March, Abstract means to extract the "essence" of an object or idea. These can be images in which there are no recognizable objects (i.e. just patterns, colors, lines and/or shapes). Also, abstract images may depict recognizable objects in simplified, distorted, or exaggerated ways. Some extreme close-up's or blended images may appear abstract. Abstract may depict a wide variety of patterns, objects, forms, moods and messages. Be imaginative! April, Non-Human Mammals: warmblooded higher vertebrates that nourish their young with milk secreted by mammary glands, and in most cases, have their skin more or less covered with hair. They can be wild, domesticated or ocean mammals. May, Street Photography includes candid (non "studio," non "staged") images of people and events. It often depicts the human condition in public places. People are usually the central focus in street photography; however objects or environments that elicit a human emotion or aesthetic may be depicted. Actual streets or urban environments are not mandatory. Costumed people are acceptable. Benjamin Lowry of National Geographic wrote: "Street photography. It sounds dirty. It sounds urban. Behind every syllable is a honking horn, a toothless grin, a siren wailing in the background. Chewing gum under your shoe, the smells of the street wafting up to hit you in the nose. Street photography is a harsh name for a beautiful pursuit. To tame the chaos. To frame the cacophony of modern life. To capture what it means to be alive." 5 SOPA November 2015

6 EID Categories: Traditional & Manipulated SOPA's Electronic Imaging Division (EID) has an additional category in called "Traditional". There is a list below of minor editing allowed for the Traditional category. SOPA will still continue to have the "Manipulated" EID category we have used in recent years, which allows for extensive image modification (layering, compositing, additions and subtractions of objects, the use of filters, HDR, stitching, infrared, etc.) All entries should be sent to Al Ingersoll by the Sunday preceeding the competition meeting. Please send four images maximum (two for assigned and two for general) to both Al's personal and the SOPA digital entry alanw46@q.com and SopaDigitalSubmissions@gmail.com Labeling Guidelines for EID Entries Traditional images will use the designator A--for Assigned, and B--for General. (See "Guidelines" within this newsletter for a list of Assigned categories for the year.) Manipulated images will use the designators C--for Assigned, and D--for General. Using Al Ingersoll as an example, his second Manipulated Assigned entry would look like this: sop-ingea5590-c2-sunset over Bandon.jpg sop = the name of the club (abbreviated from SOPA), followed by a hyphen (-). ingea5590 = the first four letters of Al's LAST name (inge) plus the first letter of Al's FIRST name (a), plus the last four digits of his phone number (5590), followed by a hyphen (-). C-2 = His second entry in the Manipulated Assigned category Sunset over Bandon.jpg = the title of Al's image. Note: The words in the title do not have to run together (e.g. sunsetoverbandon)--there may be spaces and capitalized words. More information at: or contact Al Ingersoll, alanw46@q.com Traditional EID Entries Allowed: Lens filters (polarizers, neutral density, soft focus etc.) In camera adjustments to vibrance, white balance, sharpness, etc. Cropping and straightening Exposure modification Sharpening and clarity modifications Saturation changes Vibrancy changes White Balance changes Removal of minor distractions Dodging and burning Vignetting Not Allowed: Focus stacking Composited Images (images created from combining layers) Addition of elements to the image Substantial changes to portions of the image HDR (including in-camera settings) Panoramic Stitching of multiple images (including in-camera settings) Infared sensors, filters, or software (including converted cameras) Post processing software (e.g. NIK, Topaz, Silver Effects Pro, purchased presets, Lightroom presets, artistic or painting filters) 6 SOPA November 2015
