1 ~ Next meetings ~ Tuesdays, February 5th and 12th VOLUME 50 ISSUE 6 Southern Oregon Photographic Association SOPA BOARD NEWS Dick Simonson will assume the position of historian for SOPA. As the only charter member of SOPA since its establishment in 1961, his knowledge of the history of the club is a welcome addition to meetings. There has been an increase of community interest in SOPA with about 25 new contacts in the last year. They have been added to the mailing list. The SOPA Board welcomes additional members to the board. Meetings are held after the second meeting of the month. The help of members volunteering for club setup, the providing of refreshments, and publicity makes the club run smoothly. The SOPA newsletter editor encourages the submission of guest articles on photography. Anyone is invited to submit their written opinions of topic of photographic interest. Calibration of the EID projector is currently being done. Recent competitions have been somewhat marred by color and light intensity problems. Upcoming programs are by David Winston, Sean Bagshaw, and Dan Elster. Crater Lake Sunrise Debra Harder Debra Harder will speak at the February 12th meeting of SOPA at Twin Creeks. Her outstanding photography has won many awards in Columbia Council competitions. I will be showing images that I took in 2012 including portraits, landscapes, wildlife and still life. I will also share some of my Ireland and London images from the end of Debra s images are outstanding, often dominating the competitions at SOPA and the Columbia Council of Camera Clubs. She shares her expertise in photographic capture and image manipulation regularly with SOPA members.

6 Non-Destructive Editing One of the main rules of Photoshop editing seems to be never destroy pixels and always leave yourself a way to return to the image to further edit it. This usually is expressed in the term, non-destructive editing. Along with the additional advice to shoot in raw, the pixels of an image are viewed like holy water, never to be destroyed. But are these injunctions really sage advice for every situation? Even the professional art photographer might back down from the raw, non-destructive dictum if he were taking snapshots of the family. At that point he might take jpeg images and do simplistic editing. But how about the serious photographer, intent on image manipulation and the production of images for display or competition? Must he/she slavishly follow the advice of experts and save every pixel, adjustment, and masking layer in hopes that a second delayed look at the image at some future time will dictate change in the processing stream? The original image, prior to editing change, needs to be saved. That is one rule (sage advice) that most photographers would follow. After destruction of the original, an attempt to rework a messed up non-destructively manipulated image would be, at best, difficult if not impossible. If the original is always there, a fresh start is possible. What is actually involved in non-destructive image processing? It requires a good knowledge of adjustment layers, layer masks, and selections including alpha channels. An understanding of smart objects is also valuable. One has to learn how to manipulate images without flattening the image master file. Then the saved image must have the layers saved in order to return to the image for further corrections. Photoshop has a steep learning curve and many hours working images, usually with a book in hand or an instructor at the shoulder is the best way to gain proficiency. There are many excellent photographers who do not work nondestructively. They often express the feeling that a specific image does not need that much change or that return to the original might be just as easy as twinking the already processed image. They also point out that the history panel allows for adequate return to correct mistakes in processing. They say that saving images that are most likely never to be seen again with their many layers are just a waste of space on the hard drive. Are these valid reasons for not working nondestructively or just excuses for not learning the procedures of Photoshop? Much is made of non-destructive image processing and most of the argument for it depends on the need for revision at some future time. Some artists feel it is important to not do the final processing on an image in just one step. Rather they say it is important to come back to the image in a day or so and have a fresh look at it. This would clearly indicate the need for non-destructive imaging.
