1 Dunfermline Weekend May 16th-17th 2015 The Dunfermline Weekend is one of the best ways to meet other photographers, relax and enjoy excellent talks from a wide range of speakers. This year we are lucky to have Robert Thompson FRPS, William Hume LRPS, Ian Beesley HonFRPS, Brijesh Patel, Jon Tonks, Derek Birch ASIS HonFRPS, Colin Harding, Jamie Simpson ARPS, and Mark Mumford FRPS. Beyond Words are again providing a book stall as well as the RPS stall There is a meal on the Saturday, which is a great opportunity for members to chat with each other and the speakers. Many members come on the Friday night to make a weekend break of the whole event. I have kept the cost to 2013 prices in the hope of encouraging more people to attend the weekend. We are staying at the Carnegie Conference Centre in Dunfermline as this is convenient for as many members as is possible and has good onsite facilities. They have always been supportive of the weekend. There is accommodation at the onsite Holiday Inn Express, and to allow flexibility, I am asking members to contact the Hotel directly ( ) to make bookings. 2 Robert Thompson FRPS Robert is a freelance natural history photographer and author with a number of wellknown publications in natural history and nature photography. As one of Ireland s foremost nature photographers, he is widely acknowledged as a specialist in close-up and macro photography, in the UK and a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and the Irish Photographic Federation. As an active conservationist, he has worked on several high-profile natural history recording projects in Ireland in conjunction with, the National Museums Northern Ireland, Northern Ireland Environment Agency and the National Parks and Wildlife Service in the Republic of Ireland. He has a particular interest in dragonflies, butterflies and moths for which he has a specialist scientific knowledge and was the national recorder in Ireland for Dragonflies; co-ordinator for the highly acclaimed DRAGONFLYIRELAND PROJECT. His photographs are represented by a number of agencies, including, Natural History Photographic Agency (NHPA), Photoshot, and Nature Picture Library (NPL) in the UK. William Hume LRPS Coming to photography after a clinical career, Bill particularly enjoys the scientific rigour required of these historical printing process. His alternative processes prints have won trophies at the Yorkshire Photographic Union and Photographic Society and were selected for the 2014 International Photographic Exhibition. He will describe the development from the salt print of the 1840 s, through large format film photography to the introduction of digital negatives, chemicals and ultraviolet light to make prints, this latter approach contributing to the increasing interest in these techniques. Ian Beesley HonFRPS Ian was born in Bradford West Yorkshire and after being the recipient of the Kodak Scholarship for Social Documentation in 1978 he began what has become a lifelong study of the decline of the industrial society and its impact on community. His work has been widely recognised both in the UK and abroad with his work held in such major collections as: The National Media Museum Bradford; The Imperial War Museum; The Victoria and Albert Museum London; The National Museum for Coal Mining for England, Wakefield; The Central Museum of Labour, Tampere Finland; The Smithsonian Museum Washington USA He has produced twenty monographs of his work with the latest being The Drift (2011) and T Ales (2011). 2 RPS - Scottish Region Newsletter December 2014

3 Mark Mumford FRPS Mark is a successful Artist, Illustrator, Graphic Designer and Photographer living in West Wales. His specialization is in creating wonderful surreal digital images using only his photographs and his skill manipulating images in Photoshop. He has been described as a master of his craft and probably the best digital artist working in Wales. Although Mark is now retired he spends a lot of time creating new surreal works and giving talks and workshops to camera clubs around the country. Mark will talk about his artistic background and how it has influenced his work today. His surreal work has a distinct style which is primarily landscape photography but with slight hints of Dali, Bosch, Bacon and MC Escher. Jon Tonks Originally from the West Midlands, he studied Design before turning to photography. Following a brief period as a staff photographer for a newspaper network in the Midlands, Jon left to study for an MA in Photojournalism & Documentary Photography at the London College of Communication. Since 2007, he has been undertaking commissions and working on a long term personal project voyaging to remote British Overseas Territories in the South Atlantic Ocean. This work has culminated to form his first monograph Empire, nominated by Martin Parr as one his best books of Jon s work has appeared in The Sunday Times Magazine, PDN, Guardian Weekend Magazine, British Journal of Photography, Financial Times Magazine, Monocle, Saturday Telegraph Magazine, Source and TIME lightbox. He received the RPS Vic Oddenn award in Derek Birch ASIS HonFRPS Derek is the President of the RPS. He was originally volunteered to join the RPS by a senior manager early in his 32 year career with Kodak Limited at Harrow in R&D, with over 5 years on assignments to Eastman Kodak in the USA. He had come in with a chemistry degree from Imperial College and started with fundamental studies of silver halide emulsions, including electron microscopy and grain sizing, moving on to chemical and spectral sensitization the tools for enhancing the speed and broadening the wavelength sensitivities of photographic films and papers and later advancedtechnology emulsion making. His product work was on high-speed colour negative films, colour print paper and graphics film developments. Although interested in digital technology, his more detailed knowledge is located in the traditional understanding of photographic emulsions. His personal interests are rooted in the science and technology of imaging which can lead to fascination with the range from earliest historical photographs to the latest digital imaging. 3 RPS - Scottish Region Newsletter December 2014

4 Colin Harding Curator of Photographic Technology at the National Media Museum. As well as looking after the camera collection he has curated many special exhibitions over the years. The Museum is home to over 3.5 million items of historical significance. It looks after the National Photography, National Cinematography, National Television and National New Media Collections. In 2003 it acquired the world-famous RPS Collection which consists of over images and artefacts from the last 150 years of photography. Jamie Simpson ARPS Jamie Simpson is a staff photographer for the Herald, Evening Times and Sunday Herald group of magazines and newspapers based in Glasgow and Scotland. Covering news, features, sport, events, music, portraits, and fashion for all these titles. Previous to taking up a staff job he worked as a freelance photographer with work published in the Guardian, The Telegraph, Metro, Herald, Scotsman and the Press & Journal Closing Ceremony Jamie Simpson ARPS - Herald & Times Group Brijesh Patel Based in London, he has been creating work for editorial clients since He started out making portraits for publications such as How To Spend It, Saturday Telegraph, New York Times, Monocle & The Guardian Weekend. Shortly after, he was commissioned to shoot interior features. He loves symmetry in portraiture, and hence shooting interior projects have become a second nature to his photographic practice.
