1 Newburyport Art Association Winter Members Juried Show, Part 2 Digital Art, Drawing, Oil, Printmaking, Sculpture, and Watercolor AWARDS Sam Sargent Award for Best in Show Noriko Fox, Oil, Consumption #2 Juror Comments: Being able to paint realism is one thing, but to give a painting a reason for being more than just making it look real is actually more important. All the objects of the composition are cut off by the edge of the painting. This consumption is too much to even be contained by the frame. The pretty colors of the shopping bags lure you in like candy. There is the implied message of too much of a good thing may not be good for you. This is a well done and thoughtful painting. 2 For best work in Oil Don Reed, October Corn Juror Comments: This artist is not afraid to layer on the paint. The use of uniform applications of the medium with a pallet knife in a gradation of color makes the surface sparkle. The effect is almost like looking at the scene through a kaleidoscope. H. Patterson Hale, Jr. Charitable Foundation Award For best work in Watercolor Michael Doran, Old Harbor Honfleur West Juror Comments: This watercolor stood out to me for its clarity of color and light. Nowhere is it muddy and the small bits of white paper coming through give this painting just the right amount of sparkle. Newburyport Development Award For best work in Sculpture Pete Spampinato, Forever Free Juror Comments: This artist has an understanding of the anatomy and character of a bird of prey. The bird is poised to take off in flight and has his eye on its prey. It is not an easy feat to imply movement in a sculpture. If I were a mouse I would take cover in the presence of this fine sculpture.

3 RE/MAX on the River Award For best work in Digital Art Lisa Reinke, Pinterest Doodle #1 Juror Comments: This artist took full advantage of a variety of digital effects and has made it her own. Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank Award For best work in Printmaking Muriel Angelil, The Man Juror Comments: I liked this print for its bold graphic quality and it s simple use of color and pattern. There is a spontaneous quality to the imagery, as if the figure appeared on its own, as a consequence of the arrangement of collage elements..

4 Matter Communications Inc., Award For best work in Drawing Skip Motes, Plum Island, Tidal Pool Juror Comments: This drawing is made up of definitive strong mark making. Repeated and layered marks create a velvet surface. There is a nice balance between areas left white, paper and those areas that are richly black. This is a drawing with lots of atmosphere. Newburyport Art Association For work in Oil Jan Roy, Still Life 3 Juror Comments: A unique and individual style contemporary impressionism.

Newburyport Art Association For Work in Watercolor Gail Wright, Vermont Winter Juror Comments: A super, well done watercolor. Classic and bright.

7 Juror Overall Show Comments I returned to Newburyport on yet another sparkling winter day to Jury Part Two of the Winter Members Juried Show. As before, I was very impressed by the dedication of the artist members, staff, and volunteers who were in the gallery, busy, and at the ready. Watercolor and oil paintings made up the majority of the work for my review. I could tell that extra care is given to presentation. I would caution the use of wide gold and heavy frames. They do not suit every kind of work and in some cases even detract from the painting. One wants the viewer to be drawn in by the imagery, color, and atmosphere and not by an over-powering frame. Unless you are channeling the past, I suggest more contemporary and simple framing. There is nice diversity in styles and approaches and it wasn t easy for me to jury out pieces. Even as I was putting on my coat to head home, pieces caught my eye. Good work does just that draws your attention back. There were a considerable number of landscapes, which makes sense since we live in such a beautiful and scenic area. The vast majority of these landscapes have a horizontal format. I would suggest mixing it up a bit by trying landscape compositions with a vertical or even square format. This automatically adds tension and interest to the composition. There were fewer submissions in the drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and digital art categories, but still a lot to catch my attention. I believe the mix of these other works will add to an overall very good show. Thank you again for asking me to jury this winter show.
