1 The Yellow Barn Newsletter Yellow Barn Board Members, President Jim Kettler, Vice President Paula Rubin-Wexler, Vice President Patti Hatleberg, Treasurer Ann Schaefer, Secretary W. Michael Bartman III Fall From the Director As the Yellow Barn Studio and Gallery begins its fourteenth year of operation, I am proud to say the Yellow Barn has become a well-known center for drawing and painting in the metro area. Thanks to your support, our reputation continues to grow. Recent accomplishments of the Yellow Barn have been nationally recognized. Articles in the New York Times and Bethesda Magazine highlighted the Yellow Barn as an important residency at Glen Echo Park. Julie Zhu, a Yellow Barn student, was named as one of three 2008 Presidential Scholars in the visual arts. An example of her work was displayed in the National Portrait Gallery for the month of July. Register for classes Now! Registration for Fall and Winter classes. Classes begin September 13 th. Register now to secure a spot. Register online at or by calling Put this on your Calendar The Third Friends of the Yellow Barn Paint Out Historic Braddock Heights/ Middletown Saturday, September 27, 2008 RSVP Now to Enjoy a Special Day of Painting in Historic Braddock Heights, Maryland, Founder of the Yellow Barn, and Julie Zhu The Yellow Barn continues to make a great contribution to the Glen Echo community. This fall our plans include expanding our offering of classes and workshops. Anyone interested in taking advantage of our fine programs will have a great opportunity to study with an array of outstanding Yellow Barn instructors. A variety of drawing and painting classes and workshops makes the Yellow Barn Studio an excellent destination for those interested in taking art classes. We look forward to seeing you here this fall! Sincerely, Braddock Heights, with its beautiful homes and wrap-around porches, was a popular summer destination in the late 1800 s and early 1900 s, complete with a trolley line that brought summer visitors to enjoy the famed Braddock Heights Amusement Park. On Saturday, September 27 th, The Friends of The Yellow Barn Studio will present the Third Annual Braddock Heights Paint Out. Enjoy a day of fresh mountain air with our Yellow Barn community as we Paint the Town Yellow! Last year s Braddock Heights Paint Out drew nearly fifty talented artists, who enjoyed Braddock s historic homes and scenic vistas. You might choose to paint one of the many Victorian homes in this quaint former mountain resort colony or focus your talents on the Appalachian mountains in the distance. You can see three states from Braddock! You might set your palette down in a pasture overlooking cornfields or a herd of cattle. Whatever you choose to paint, you are sure to have a memorable day in this

2 unique and beautiful setting. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Braddock Heights Community Center. Bring a potluck dish. Fried chicken and drinks will be provided. All artists will be provided with an area map. Each artist will pay $5.00, which will go toward the winner s prize. There will be a break for lunch at 1:00 p.m. and we will continue to paint until 4:30 p.m. At day s end, you will bring your work back to The Home Restaurant at Braddock Inn where you will set up your easel for a competition and exhibit from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. If you would like, you can make your painting available for sale at the Artist s Sale Table. Stay, have dinner and enjoy a 10% starving artist discount at The Home Restaurant at Braddock Inn. Reservations are suggested but not required. You will enjoy The Home s famed family-style cooking and the camaraderie of your fellow artists. We need artist volunteers to help staff the Artist s Sale Table, and to help at various times throughout the day. Please check the registration form or call Robyn Bartman at to volunteer! RSVP TODAY: Please complete the entry form at the end of this newsletter to pre-register. We need your RSVP by September 10 th.
