1 CELEBRATE AT THE PHILLIPS COLLECTION SPECIAL EVENTS AT AMERICA S FIRST MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
2 ABOUT THE PHILLIPS COLLECTION Encounter superb works of modern art in an intimate setting at The Phillips Collection, opened to the public in 1921 in Washington s vibrant Dupont Circle neighborhood by founder Duncan Phillips. Following the death of his father and brother with whom he shared a close relationship, he and his mother responded by founding the museum, originally called the Phillips Memorial Art Gallery. Sorrow all but overwhelmed me, he later wrote. Then I turned to my love of painting for the will to live. Paintings by Renoir and Rothko, Bonnard and O Keeffe, van Gogh and Diebenkorn are among the 4,000 works in the collection that ranges from masterpieces of French Impressionism and American modernism to contemporary art. Its distinctive building combines extensive new galleries with the former home of its founder. The collection continues to develop with selective new acquisitions, many by contemporary artists. Special exhibitions and frequent changes in the arrangement of the permanent collection mean that there s something fresh on every visit to the Phillips. Hosting an event at the Phillips is an opportunity to gain exclusive access to the intimate galleries and take an inspirational tour through an extraordinary collection.

4 COLLECTION HIGHLIGHTS JACOB LAWRENCE S MIGRATION SERIES The 60-panel Migration Series ( ) portrays the Great Migration, the flight of over a million African Americans from the rural South to the industrial North following between the World Wars. Following the example of the West African storyteller or griot, who spins tales of the past that have meaning for the present and the future, Lawrence tells a story that reminds us of our shared history and at the same time invites us to reflect on the universal theme of struggle in the world today. THE ROTHKO ROOM In 1960, as Duncan Phillips was designing an adjoining building to accommodate his growing collection, he designated a specific room for Rothko s paintings, making the Phillips the first American museum to dedicate a space to the artist s work. From the outset, the room was intended as a meditative space, even referred to by Phillips as a type of chapel. The space set a standard for future commissions for the artist in other locations, but the Phillips s room remains the only existing installation of Rothko s paintings that was designed in collaboration with the artist himself. PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR S LUNCHEON OF THE BOATING PARTY Luncheon of the Boating Party ( ) by Pierre-Auguste Renoir remains the best known and most popular work of art at The Phillips Collection, just as Duncan Phillips imagined it would be when he bought it in The painting captures an idyllic atmosphere as Renoir s friends share food, wine, and conversation on a balcony overlooking the Seine at the Maison Fournaise restaurant. ARTISTS OF TODAY Acquisitions by major artists of today include works by Howard Hodgkin, Anselm Kiefer, Whitfield Lovell, Leo Villareal, and major postwar European artists including Per Kirkeby, Markus Lüpertz, and Karel Appel. The Phillips s Intersections contemporary art series inaugurated in 2009 invites artists to create work inspired by the art and spaces at the museum. 1,000+ PHOTOGRAPHS Although he was primarily focused on painting, Duncan Phillips began collecting photography as early as the 1940s and believed that the camera was as sensitive to the touch and as malleable to the mind as the violin. The Phillips has since carefully curated its photography collection, now the museum s fastest growing area of acquisition. Approximately 1,000 examples comprise the collection 94 percent of which have been gifts to the Phillips. Works by American photographers comprise 84 percent of the total collection.
