On the other hand, several have participated in at least one a year for the number of years that they have been painting. The hour-long demonstrations CCWS hosts at our monthly meetings will help you improve your painting. I am also convinced attending workshops conducted by career artists can significantly improve an artist s painting ability. This is why CCWS works hard to arrange to bring in talented, successful artists to present professional-level workshops for its members. The cost of attending workshops typically ranges between $100 to $150 per day, so you ll want to choose a workshop that is right for you. Make sure the workshop The Central Coast Watercolor Society was founded in 1976 with the main purpose of fostering interaction, creative activity and artistic development among watercolor artists living on the Central Coast. In addition we seek to further the interests, appreciation, activ- Our Mission leader will focus on the type of painting that you are interested in. For example, are you interested in portraits, landscaping, abstracts or some other subject material? Check out the artist whose workshop you re considering. There is a host of information available online about potential workshop leaders concerning their work and comments about their ability to teach. You can also ask other CCWS members if they have experience with workshops given by that particular artist. Each workshop leader will have a list of materials, which includes the type of paper and the color palette that they typically use. Keiko will do two demonstrations per day and provide one-on-one guidance. Please visit her website at: www: ktanabefineart.com The cost of the workshop will be $275 for CCWS Members and $325 for non-members. It will be held at St. Peter s Episcopal Church, 545 Shasta Street, Morro Bay, CA. Workshop registration begins August 1st and the form will be available on the CCWS Website. Workshop Space Reservation Form CCWS Bylaws Updated at the 2016 General Membership Meeting The first order of business for our Annual membership meeting in April of this year was to approve the CCWS budget for 2017 and the dues structure for We are happy to announce the dues will continue to be only $30 annually, the same as the last several years. When the Central Coast Watercolor Society left the museum organization, a team of hard-working members developed an excellent set of Bylaws for the CCWS to use. The fiscal year which is a part of our 501 (c) (3) mandate requires an operating year that begins on January 1st. The Bylaws as they existed, created a conflict with the timing of 4 important annual events: 1.) The April - General Meeting date 2.) Membership dues notification 3.) Membership operating budget approval President s Message Continued from page 2 I heartily recommend that you try to duplicate this list of materials, and that you dedicate yourself to becoming a student during the workshop. Try to emulate the work of the workshop leader. Keep in mind that the artist probably has done his or her demo paintings numerous times prior to the first time that you see it done, and you may be doing something for the first time. Third Quarter 2016 Page 3 4.) And dues amount approval. Each voting member must have paid their dues by March 1st; however, the General Membership meeting date set for April was required to approve both our current year s annual dues and the current year s annual operating budget. At the General Membership meeting this past April, the Bylaws were revised, changing the annual meeting date from April to October. Also, a number of operational wording changes were made, all of which are now a part of our Bylaws. Due to the meeting s coordination of our fiscal year and approval of the 2017 budget and dues amount, the next annual CCWS General Membership meeting has been changed from April 2017 to October A copy of the CCWS Revised Bylaws will be sent to all CCWS members on August 1, If by chance the workshop leader has a DVD or perhaps a YouTube video, I would strongly suggest you try to duplicate one of those paintings prior to the workshop to at least gain some understanding of the techniques that will be taught. The group critiques from the workshop leader generally focus on the positives, so be sure to carefully listen to any criticism to help you improve your paintings. Continued on Page 4

4 CCWS News and Updates 1-Night Only Members Show and Potluck Dinner The highlight of the April meeting was our second potluck dinner and a 1-night only members show. We had 20 entries for the show with those attending selecting the winners for the prizes. There were four prizes awarded for the show. Roseanne Seitz, 1st Place Winner with her painting Spooner s Cove, Montana de Oro. First place went to Roseanne Seitz, for her landscape painting called Spooner s Cove, Montana de Oro. Second place prize was a tie between Sue Sevier s painting of Sticks and Stones and Jerry Smith s Quiet Time. The final prize for the evening was awarded to Michael Grahek for his delightful cat painting called Canut. Be sure and mark your calendars for the next 1-Night Only Members Show and Potluck Dinner to be held October 25, Michael Grahek took third place with his painting called Canut. CCWS Show Schedule Sue Sevier s Sticks and Stones tied for second place with Jerry Smith s Quiet Time. President s Message Continued from page 3 Be sure and write down what was said, both good and bad, so you can remember what was said to apply it to your paintings. The number of days in the workshop also needs to be considered. Typical CCWS workshops are 3 days in length, because it s been our experience that a 5-day workshop can sometimes be tiring; the last day is almost a wash due to people getting ready to go home and rest. If one focuses on the learning process with a good workshop leader and works at the techniques and procedures shown, a workshop length of 3 days is just about right. I urge each of you to attend as many workshops as you can place in your budget. It will help improve your work, and it can be a lot of fun at the same time. We all can learn from those painters who are Full-time artists. 6 CCWS Member News Nipomo Library Hosts Intro to Watercolor Workshop On Saturday, June 18, the Nipomo Public Library hosted a free, one-time, introduction to watercolor workshop, which was attended by 18 adult students. Jerry Smith, on behalf of the Monday Morning Painters and the CCWS, was the instructor. Dail Schroeder and Leslie Parsons were classroom assistants. The majority of the attendees had never painted with watercolors prior to this class. Jerry supplied the students with a picture pre-drawn and premasked on ¼-sheet watercolor paper. Students were given a 4- color palette, and Jerry walked them through the steps to create the finished painting. When the workshop was over, the students seemed very appreciative and some were hoping for another class. Jerry and his assistants were wishing for a good beginning watercolor class to recommend. The students were given a CCWS brochure and invited to attend a meeting. In Memorium Page Graeber announced that her sister, Marilyn Marshall passed away, Monday, June 27, Marilyn was active in all of the Society s events and enjoyed helping out with the development of the organization. This last 1-1/2 years she has had to stop a lot of her involvement due to health issues. She will be missed! A Celebration of her Life was held July 17th at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Paso Robles. 7 Upcoming Events Michael Grahek and Limited Color Palette Opportunities! July Presentation Michael Grahek s Lighthouse, painted with a limited palette. The speaker for the July 26th meeting will be Mike Grahek, who paints with both watercolor and ink together. For a dozen years, Michael studied with Milford Zornes recognized as a leader in the California Style watercolor movement traveling with him on painting excursions to Spain, Cuba, Death Valley, New Orleans, Utah and Arizona. Grahek s presentation will explore the benefits of using a limited color palette to add excitement to paintings. Marguerite Lyons, Still Life Painter August Presentation Everyday objects in uncommon arrangements are the essence of Marguerite Lyons still life paintings. Lyons is an awardwinning watercolorist whose work has been displayed at the National Arts Club and the New World Art Center, both in New York City; the Colorado Springs Museum of Fine Arts, the Pasadena Historical Museum, the San Diego Museum of Art, Tubac Arts Center in Arizona, Long Beach Arts Gallery, and the University Club of Santa Barbara. Marguerite Lyons is a Signature Member of Women Painters West and Artist Member of the California Art Club. She is a member of: National Association of Women Artists, National Watercolor Society, California Watercolor Association and the American Academy of Women Artists. Jackie Bradley September Presentation Jackie moved to San Luis Obispo, California in 1974 where she still resides with her husband. She works in watercolor but also does beautiful silk paintings. Her classical art training exposed her to traditional old masters as well as contemporary and modern European art. Her main interests include drawing, water media and especially silk painting. The richness and subtle hues made possible with French dyes and the use of resist is what Shell Beach by Jackie Bradley makes silk painting so exciting and challenging for the artist. It also holds the potential for creating both 2D and 3D art. Third Quarter 2016 Page 7 Jackie uses figurative and realistic approaches as well as abstract themes to draw inspiration from and interpret the beauty of the Central Coast and other California locales. Jackie is a signature member of the Central Coast Watercolor Society a member of several other art associations and also serves on the Board of Directors at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art.

8 Upcoming Events Don t Miss Out on this Fun Event in October Our Last 1-Night Only Members Show and Potluck Dinner Each member is asked to bring one dish and their drink for the potluck along with one or two paintings for display. The show will be juried by all in attendance and prizes will be awarded for the best three paintings. The potluck dinner and social time start at 6:00 pm. This is a wonderful chance to share your work with other Society members and maybe win a prize. Your painting should be matted and or framed. This is a casual competition and everyone seems to have a good time. CCWS members enjoying potluck fare at the April event. FIVE Important Benefits of a CCWS Membership 3. Make New Friends: CCWS is 100 members strong, and we all share watermedia interest and are very open to sharing information. What a great icebreaker for our group of Signature Member, Roseanne Seitz, shared her process for Plein Air painting as the June demo artist. 1. Learn from Others: Our members have a common interest in enjoying watermedia artistry. Sharing ideas and information is a major focus not only about paints, paper and techniques, but marketing and show opportunities as well. 2. Improve Your Paintings: Your CCWS membership includes a Members Only juried show each year and two 1-Night Only members shows which occur during the monthly meetings. This is a great chance to compare, learn and see how your development as a watermedia painter is improving. Scott Carichner shares his painting with the group at a 1-Night Only Member Show Pot Luck Dinners give us a chance to get to know our fellow artists a little better. 5. Stay Inspired and Stay Motivated: With our annual regional Aquarius show and participation in the Members Only Shows, an artist wanting to improve will have many benchmarks in their sight to measure their personal development. artists to open themselves to devotees of watermedia. 4. Strength in Numbers: This means we can sponsor more events for our membership to enjoy. We are now sponsoring 2 workshops each year and have developed excellent monthly demonstrations with outstanding artists to help with our watermedia education.
