2 Page Layouts There are several ways to organize your investigative pages. Presentation, craftsmanship and neatness count for a lot. A well organized page will only enhanced the overall look of your IW/Art Journal. If I can not read your pages they will be skipped, unread and receive not credit for that page. Resulting in a lower score than you may deserve. Therefore making sure your writing is legible will go a long way. You should also ensure your layouts are presentable. The slides that follow will include several page layouts, please do not photograph or use this Presentation/PDF without the author s permission. This presentation has been uploaded to the class website as a PDF for educational purposes only. This is meant to help you but not as the only way to complete pages. You should consider adding your own creativity to your workbook pages. Most importantly make sure your investigative pages are significant, meaningful to you and relevant to your FOCUS.

If you don t have a source for MOST of the art images you are using it will be evident you are finding your artwork using the least favorable sources. 7 ART ANNOTATION Here you would comment on art elements and principles of design. For example, Absence or use of color. Importance of text or subject mater. You can describe movement created by the use of line. Or emphasis on the face. NOTE: This is a VERY useful and highly regarded way to analyze artwork. annotate: verb, add notes to (a text or diagram) giving explanation or comment. Talk about artist s intentions or influences of other artwork/cultures. 9 Include a description of what you are doing. NOTE: You should be including final sketch or photo of the final plan in your IW. You can rework or talk about reworking your art on the same page. Write about how your research is influencing this work. Write a short reflection on what you did. Describe what areas you like or dislike. (your own or from investigation) and/or artwork.
10 INSPIRATION My focus is portraits and I have been looking for new ways to explore portraits. In particular, I was looking for self-portraits for inspiration. Upon doing so I came across this cut paper portrait by artist Tom Banwell. I love how simple it is however I would want to make it my own so I will definitely change the color scheme. This color scheme is very dull and I want something with more intensity. The monochromatic scheme is not how I would like to approach my own work. I think I will also crop my face to create interest. Along with portraits I have been looking into expression of emotions through color so my choice of color scheme will be vital to the outcome of my artworks success. I found it very hard to find information on this art piece. It seems Banwell is better known for his Steampunk artwork. Here is an example. 11 Exploring Color Mixing/Blending Take this opportunity to talk about why you are exploring color. This is NOT a technique it is mixing colors. I need to choose a color scheme for my artwork so I decided to explore colors I own and mix them to see what other colors I can get. I m noticing how the colors are changing intensity. Since I am using colors to show shadows, tints and shades on my portrait I am thinking I will paint white paper to create my own colored paper. It will be too difficult to find these colors. I am leaning towards the warm colors because this is a selfportrait and I think those colors really will express the emotion I want to evoke. (your own or from investigation).
12 Technique Here you can practice techniques you researched in art books, magazines, worksheets or videos. Cite your sources. Take the time to explain why you are exploring this technique. It should be relevant to your artwork. What are you learning? Here you can apply what you learned in relation to your art. For example if my focus is portraits I would practice the shading techniques above with various facial features. PRIOR to a final sketch. (your own or from investigation).
13 What is the purpose of these examples? The intention of this presentation is to help you build comprehensive pages. Keep in mind that these are examples to help you however you should make your pages your own. Add artwork, decorate, doodle and be creative using visual interest on every 2-3 pages. There is no EXACT formula however there is criteria which is required and expected of you. I will attach some of those here at the end of the presentation. We have reviewed them in class twice this semester so they will (should) be familiar.
14 REPUTABLE SOURCES Art reference books (Bookcase) Art text books (Bookcase) Art magazines (Gray/Red Binders) Art museums resources (online or at the museum) Art encyclopedias online (or other educational websites) Official artists websites Documentaries (about artists, movements, art etc) *You may include other sources for tutorials and techniques however be careful to not use this as your primary source!
15 IN-DEPTH What do you mean by in-depth investigation? In relation to your IW the meaning behind in-depth is to explore ideas and your focus in great detail. I will often use the terms like comprehensive, thorough and breadth. The expectation is that your entire research show a comprehensive investigation of all important aspects of creating artwork. (Purpose, history, artist, media, technique and culture to name a few). It is required you use a wide range of resources to research your FOCUS. It is also expected you develop and synthesis ideas leading towards art work which will demonstrate your investigation. Therefore, a clear relationship between your investigation and studio work must be evident. In whole your artwork must have a focus and your investigation pertinent to your artwork. You MUST include evidence where you make connections between your study and your approach.

Reflects on culture and compares to other cultures/art. Finds artwork to annotate. What is the artists style? Annotates, critiques and investigates artists styles and techniques. Studies (critique, annotation, reading and research) to learn about artists process. Practices the process of other artists relevant to focus.
