21 P41 Battiss Walter Whall (South African ) I must remember I am not someone else but who am I Silkscreen, signed, edition 3/10 55 x 55cm R8 000 R One is consistently reminded of the extraordinary variety of Walter Battiss making practice. This print was made after the artist s visit to Germany and London in the late 1960s/ early 1970s during which he met master printer Chris Betambeau who introduced him particularly to photographic processes of screen-printing. Using quite a candid black and white photograph as a base a young man stands casually with his hands coyly placed in his pockets Battiss has overlaid two bold white shapes, which become a kind of addition by erasure. The larger shape evokes a humanoid presence a suggestion of a head and shoulders a cloaked fi gure, a ghost. The other white shape resembles a speech bubble, which, though empty, points to the young man s mouth with a sense of anticipation. This simultaneous evocation of absence and presence in the image is characteristic of much of Battiss work, across media, and seems to be a key strategy in his exploration of image making. The body of sgraffi to oil paintings for instance, which catapulted him into the international limelight, rests on the process of the addition and subsequent deletion of paint. The title of the work, Untitled Artists Silhouette, suggests Battiss own insertion into the image a phantom presence, invoking the aura of the artist despite the mechanical process of the print. A version of this silkscreen was included in the 2008 exhibition of Battiss prints at Gallery AOP in Johannesburg. S V* Reference: 1. VAN RENSBERG, Wilhelm Walter Battiss ( ). [Exhibition Catalogue]. 29 P53 Shilakoe, Cyprian Mpho (South African ) Let s wait until they come Woodcut print, signed, 1970, edition AP 38 x 30,5cm R R Cyprian Shilakoe is well known for being more inclined to making sensitive aquatint etchings during his time at Rorke s Drift, unlike many of his contemporaries who preferred to work in relief printing like woodcut. Interestingly in this sensitive woodcut, Shilakoe evokes the same shimmering and translucent effect that is present in his etchings, by incising delicate stipples into the face and legs of the main fi gure. This effect, as well as the simplifi ed and armless torsos of the fi gures, is what make this work so characteristic of Shilakoe s style. The theme of waiting is also prevalent in the artist s oeuvre, and is probably a reference to the deep connection he reported to have with the spiritual realm. Looking up, the main fi gure seems to be searching the sky for the anticipated they, while the two darker fi gures in the background cast their eyes downward. Their silhouettes are starkly contrasted with the main fi gure s glittering, almost bejeweled, surface reinforcing a sense of the supernatural. One of the editions of this work is part of the Campbell Smith Collection. S V* Reference: 1. DOLBY, Joe Cyprian Shilakoe. Revisions: Expanding the Narrative of South African Art. 43 P75 Pemba, George Mnyalaza Milwa (South African ) In service Watercolour, signed, has a small tear on right edge and a fold mark 35,8 x 28,5cm R R George Pemba was tutored in watercolour in the 1930 s at University College Fort Hare and Rhodes University. Allegedly, sometime in the early 1940 s, Pemba was persuaded to switch to the medium of oil painting by Gerard Sekoto, who drew Pemba s attention to the higher premium paid for the more robust medium and argued its suitability to depicting African subjects. This delicately observed portrait is arguably dated from the period before this shift, c c. 1941, which is claimed by art historian, Hayden Proud, to include Pemba s best works. The fl uidity, tentativeness, and play of light that the medium allows is what makes this particular work so unlike the prevalent style at the time, and certainly give it an alluring quality that causes the eye to linger. The highlights on the hands and chin of the subject, for instance, reveal the extent of Pemba s skill in building up thin layers of paint to evoke volume and form. Additionally, the moments where suspension of disbelief is disrupted in the foundational drawing in pencil and especially in the way the paint bleeds from below the subject s hands gives the image a sense of its own fallibility and in this sense challenges the stereotypical representations of Africans in the early 20th century. 49 P85 Catherine, Norman Clive (South African ) Headgear Oil on canvas, signed 100 x 130cm R R This large oil painting by Norman Catherine displays his characteristic human-animal hybrids, which invariably evoke political traumas and testimonies of South Africa. In this particular work the key fi gure wears headgear in the form of a crocodile, which protrudes in profi le as a kind of mask. Whether intentionally or not, the work references the infamous South African statesman P. W. Botha who passed away in October 2006 around the time of this work s creation. Botha, was often, colloquially, referred to as Die Groot Krokodil (Afrikaans for The Big Crocodile ) for his abrasive nature. The array of fi gures surrounding the central subject are variously characterised with forms of headgear. Some have horns, hats, masks, and additional heads. Two particular fi gures are donned in black suits and hats, one, which holds a knife dripping with blood. It is arguable that the scene references Botha s funeral, which was controversially attended by Thabo Mbeki. The variety of masked fi gures in this sense suggests the complexity of mourning the passing of Botha there are layers of projected complicity, of shame and of guarded positions behind deadpan, masked faces. 50 P86 Shange, Peter Bongani (South African), Head E: Mayibuye series Bronze, Signed, edition 3/5 18,4cm ht R8 000 R Bongani Peter Shange is the nephew of well-known South African artist Sydney Kumalo. Shange comments as a child I could never understand why when everyone was going to work he [Kumalo] would lock himself up in a room and stay home. Following in these footsteps, Shange attended Rorke s Drift and later won a scholarship to spend a year studying in Florence, Italy. From the late 1970s, Shange exhibited regularly in Cape Town, having taken part in the Community Arts Project in Mowbray. The title of this series, Mayibuye, is a Zulu word meaning bringing back what is lost and, in particular, references the cultural traditions and way of life experienced before apartheid or the oppression of colonialism. The heads that make up the series each individual, but all idealized and elongated in this sense, are perhaps evocations of this dislocated past; ancestors that call for a return to paradise lost. A similar series of heads are included in the art collection of the South Africa Reserve Bank. S V* References: 1. 69 P118 Amaler-Raviv, Arlene (South African 1953) Naked Oil on canvas, signed, x 61cm R8 000 R Arlene Amaler-Raviv uses paint as a medium through which to explore recurrent themes in her work: vulnerability, loneliness and the human condition. Many of her more recent works include explorations of paint on more unstable surfaces, like glass and aluminum, allowing the paint to disrupt represented forms in how it runs, drips and congeals. As a precursor to this contemporary practice, Naked suggests the artist s exploration of the limits of naturalism. The image seems to depict what the title clearly stipulates: a study of the human form in the nude. However, the rendering in paint simultaneously constructs and disrupts the representation. The fi gure s skin becomes a kind of canvas in its own right. The more one looks beneath the surface of this image, the less it seems to be a simple depiction of the human fi gure. The pose of the fi gure and the title of the work reinforce this. Naked, rather than nude, sidesteps the invocation of the tradition of fi gure studies and, rather, calls up a sense of vulnerability that is reinforced by the view of the exposed body. This androgynous, faceless, and fragmented fi gure conjures up a sense of ambiguity that is so often present in the work of Amaler-Raviv and enriches the image with a raw potency that is not often associated with fi gure painting. 70 P119 Cohen, Steven (South African ) Bathing beauties Silkscreen on fabric 202 x 129 cm R8 000 R

71 P120 Cohen, Steven (South African ) Bathing beauties Silkscreen fabric on armchair R8 000 R Much like Steven Cohen s other work in these forms, this armchair and silkscreen print use repeated motifs to create an ordered and aesthetically pleasing design that is disrupted upon closer inspection; when the invisibility of the pattern makes way for the individual detail. Having dropped out of the army to study screen-printing at the Ruth Prowse Art School in the late 1980s, Cohen eventually expanded his range of making practices to include installation, by using his hand-printed fabrics to reupholster furniture. Beginning in the early 1990 s, Cohen would style gallery spaces as staged domestic settings with this furniture, and accessorise the room with decadent chandeliers, zebra skin rugs, and other objects associated with wealth and excess. Bathing Beauties features two key motifs, which are repeated across the surface of the fabric. The bathing beauties, referred to in the title, form the primary image, which depicts two 1950s style bathers knee deep in water. Both modestly cast their gaze downwards towards the water s reflective surface, upon which floats bright pink flowers. The smaller image is drawn from a 17th century engraving by Flemish anatomist, Adriaan van de Spiegel, entitled De Formato Foetu Liber Exornatus, and depicts the development of the fetus, blossoming out of a goddess-like figure s abdomen. The juxtaposition of these two visions of the female form is what is veiled in this particular Cohen pattern; he counters the buxom bathers with the grotesque imagined anatomical drawing. The reference to flowers is further emphasized in the armchair, where in the background, overgrown trumpet-shaped blossoms resemble the flayed out womb of van de Spiegel s poor subject.
