24 P47 Skotnes, Cecil Edwin Frans (South African ) Head Carved, incised and painted panel, signed 58,5 x 45,5cm R R Head is executed in Cecil Skotnes signature medium in which he carefully incises a wooden panel, creating a three-dimensional surface onto which he adds a limited colour palette. Skotnes made a series of works similar to this in which he typically meditates on an abstracted portrait. The influence of European Modernism on Skotnes is clear in the starkly delineated forms and the teetering edge of abstraction, giving the head a simultaneous familiarity and strangeness. The thick black outline, which forms the edges of the face, the neck and shoulders as well as a horizontally elongated horn, is also characteristic of Skotnes work, which often emphasises a kind of exoskeleton that carefully ensconces more detailed and vulnerable elements. These works also need to be understood in relation to Skotnes familiarity with African masks, from which he was known to have drawn inspiration. This work in particular evokes masks made by the Punu people from a region in Gabon. These typically represent ideal female ancestors and are characterised by their diamond-shaped white faces set in bold yet ornately carved black hairstyles. In addition, many masks carry a similarly diamond-shaped, criss-cross, scarification on their foreheads, which is somewhat similar to the lines on the top half of the face in Head. S V* Reference: 1. 47 P90 Pemba, George Mnyalaza Milwa (South African ) The dice players Oil on board, signed, x 74cm R R Completed while George Pemba was in his early sixties, this intimate portrait of three men passing the time by playing dice is a typical example of the subject matter that has brought acclaim to an artist who spent much of his youth painting only as a hobby. It was during this time that Pemba began to paint consistently after relinquishing the running of his grocery shop to his family. Increasingly in this period, Pemba depicted the urbanisation of rural and township life, capturing everything from the banal to the political. In The Dice Players three men sit barefoot in the sand. Their child-like bodies and poses are contradicted by the age clearly etched in the lines on their faces. Though Pemba has claimed that his work is not political rather that he painted what he saw around him, which was sometimes inescapably political this subtle contradiction lends itself to a politicised reading of township life at the time, where grown men were reduced to boys by the inequalities of apartheid. The central figure in the work bears a striking resemblance to a young Pemba, which gives the painting a potential reflective quality, a sense of lost or wasted youth. It is plausible that this work would have been included in Pemba s first solo exhibition at the Little Gallery in Port Elizabeth, which ran until at least September of The Eastern Province Herald reported on the show saying that the fifty odd paintings included depicted the urbanisation of the African people with an intimacy of knowledge which few whites could possess. 57 P116 Pemba, George Mnyalaza Milwa (South African ) Stick fi ghting Oil on board, signed, x 49cm R R As painter of social realism, George Pemba s oeuvre captures both a sense of urbanisation, as in The Dice Players, as well as continuing traditions, which is exemplified in Stick Fighting. This meeting of the rural and the urban is accentuated by the western clothing of the two fighters, over which Xhosa beaded adornments are worn. The custom of stick fighting is an Nguni tradition, which has passed into both Zulu and Xhosa contemporary practice, primarily today during wedding ceremonies in which the young men in the bridegroom s family welcome and get to know the young men in the bride s family. Pemba spent most of his life living in the Eastern Cape, but during the 1940s was granted an opportunity to travel around the country to paint its people and plains. During this trip, Pemba was particularly drawn to documenting people in their national or traditional dress in a similar fashion to the practice of artists like Gerard Bhengu and Barbara Tyrell. This work, however, illustrates the two primary ways through which Pemba was to discern himself in his depiction of indigenous people and their practices. Rather than detailing individual portraits with close studies of costumes, Pemba often portrayed groups in carefully balanced compositions. In addition, his focus is not anthropological, but rather an attempt to capture the drama and atmosphere of the occasion. At the age of fifty, the artist had firmly established himself as a leading proponent of the South African art market, and would still have another four decades of artistic practice ahead of him. Known for his impressionistic landscapes, particularly of District Six and the Bo-Kaap, Boonzaier was also a founding member and the first chairman of the New Group in the late 1930s. This closely studied work is one of a series of self-portraits, which the artist executed throughout the course of his artistic career. The works share a sense of elongation in the shape of the head and become progressively loosely composed. Many of them share a similar expression, perhaps carried in the concentration evident in Boonzaier s furrowed brow. Mabasa who is the only female Venda sculptor of her generation, began in her early artistic practice by making matano figures, which are used in Venda initiation schools: Vhusha, Tshikunda and Domba. In these initiation schools young Venda women are instructed in behaviour, customs and cultural symbolism through the use of matano. While clay matano are associated primarily with the first two stages of initiation, wooden matano are usually specifically reserved for the Domba school. Famously, the late Makhuba made a series of wooden matano for Domba, which were acquisitioned by Wits Art Museum in the late 1970s. However it was only in the early 1980s that Mabasa would meet Makhuba and receive training in woodcarving. This sculpture by Mabasa is clearly influenced by the carved wooden matano as well as Makhuba, in the elongated rectangular shape of the figure as well as the modest pose in which she stands, hands clasped together in front of her. This may be an early work for these reasons. Soon after learning the practice of woodcarving, Mabasa went on to make more elaborate and large-scale wooden sculptures and enamelpainted clay sculptures that depicted various characters such as policeman and nurses.
