5 P2 Walter Whall Battiss (South Africa, ) Round House Car Park silkscreen, 65 x 95 cm R7,000 - R10,000 This rare work is an unsigned proof, and is of excellent provenance having come out of the collection of Giles Battiss, son of Walter Battiss, who inherited the artist s private collection on the artist s death in The work has been stored in archival conditions ever since and comes to auction now for the first time. The work is reflective of the interest in both Op-art and Pop-art movements which were prevalent in youth culture of the late 1960s

6 P3 Walter Whall Battiss (South Africa, ) Tinguely and His Machine silkscreen, 95 x 71 cm R7,000 - R10,000 This rare unsigned work is from the collection of Giles Battiss and documented in Walter Battiss: I Invented Myself on page 94 wherein Warren Siebrits describes this work as one of Battiss s most radical and inventive. The work is a tribute to Jean Tinguely ( ), a Swiss Sculptor who had visited South Africa earlier in the year this work was produced. Due to South Africa s strict censorship laws the work was not produced in South Africa, and it was never exhibited here either, having been produced, most likely in London. The pornographic images were acquired by the artist in Greece, whilst the other photographs used in this composition were taken by the artist himself at the Pretoria Technikon where Tinguely had been invited to give a workshop on the production of his machine sculptures. For obvious reasons, this edition had to be made in London, and a few proof copies then smuggled back into South Africa. 1 Reference: 1. Siebrits, W. Represented are machine like symbols suspended in a silent field, no longer able to sustain a straight lines as they erode. The optical effect of the wool dust gives the free hand drawn lines a velvety mould-like fuzziness that jars with the subject of steel machines and measuring implements, giving the work a post-apocalyptic feeling. The artist first used the dust medium in 2004 for her exhibition, Promised Land, which dealt with our perceptions of our relationship with death. The artist incorporated ash into some of the sculptural works on the show and also found a way to reference dust. She has continued to use the (wool) dust in her work as a way to speak about the transience and fragility of all things - a thread that runs through her practice. These particular images began as fragments and working drawings for a series of much larger works for the Promised Land exhibition which toured SA in P57 Kim Berman (South Africa, ) Two works: Dislocated Landscape I and III colour plate engraving, signed, 2009, numbered E.V. 6/6 and Artist Proof both 29.5 x 89 cm R5,000 - R8,

In his works dealing with the massacre of the Herero people of Namibia by the Germans during their occupation of South West Africa the artist developed the image of a rhino wearing a dog collar and eating from a dog bowl with the name Fido ladled on it. This allegorical image of a wild and powerful creature tamed and domesticated finds a sympathetic echo in the work here presented where a pair of garden shears dominate a landscape with monumental and sardonic humour. Garden shears are a tool for trimming and taming the garden

69 P128 (This image cannot be displayed due to licence/royalty constraints) Peter Clarke (South Africa, ) Two Men pastel on paper, signed, 1955, 26.5 x 37 cm R35,000 - R50,000 Peter Clarke is perhaps best known for his oil paintings and his printmaking, but having a practice essentially based on observation and drawing, it is unsurprising that the artist also experimented with pastel drawing. Presented here is a beautifully attentive and sinuous study of the attire of two male subjects. Rather than being a portrait, the figures are rendered anonymous by the cropping of the heads above the mouth. Evident is the enjoyment in the capturing of curve and form and probably represents an example of the artist s body of work produced for the sheer enjoyment of drawing and of observing the world around him. This work was produced at a seminal time in artists life because it was not long after the production of this image that Peter Clarke made the life changing decision to become a fulltime artist after many years of drudgery spent as a dock worker. The nature of life under apartheid made it extremely difficult for any person, other than a white person, to pursue a career in the arts; yet against the odds, Peter Clarke went on to become one of the most important documenters of the South African condition in the post-apartheid era

70 P129 (This image cannot be displayed due to licence/royalty constraints) Peter Clarke (South Africa, ) Sinister Moonlight woodcut, signed, October 80, numbered 4/29 10 x 13.5 cm R5,000 - R8,000 Peter Clarke s style of composing his with iconographic simplicity, paring down his use of line according to a geometricizing logic, and arriving at an instantly recognisable stylisation of form, earned him the critique that he was perhaps foremost a graphic designer and not really an artist. Whilst this view can not be sustained at all given the breadth and depth of the artists prolific output which was wide ranging and sometimes political in nature, we can see from the beautifully composed image here presented that Clarke was an aesthete with a powerful guiding sensibility, which could have been dismissed, ignorantly, as mere design. In Sinister Moonlight we see a sapling acorn tree gleaming in a surreal sap-green, caught by the light of the moon on a calm flat horizon line. Tranquillity, the image suggests, is just an illusion however, the flat horizon line is broken by the rapidly zig-zagging lines of long grass reminiscent of a heart rate monitor picking up a sudden spike in the adrenaline of a patient in hospital. There is a snake slithering in the grass don t get too comfortable. Whilst not overtly political this image betrays the paranoia of life in South Africa in 1986, at a time when the apartheid state apparatus was at its most invasive. This period of South Africa s history was characterised by frequent states of emergency, entailing the restriction of movement of civilians and curfews. Clarke s Sinister Moonlight, was commissioned as a cover design for Contrast 56, December 1983 Volume 14 No 4, a biannual publication published buy South Africa s left wing intellectuals and include Notes on Nadine Gordimer and Ingrid Jonker, contemporary poetry and book reviews of the time. A copy of Contrast 56 accompanies an original limited edition woodcut print upon which the cover is based in this lot

72 P132 David Hockney (United Kingdom, ) Peter Schlesinger lithograph, signed, 76, numbered 35/90 40 x 30 cm R16,000 - R20,000 Recently at an important sale of Modern and Contemporary Art at Christies, Portrait of an Artist: Pool with Two Figures sold for $90,3 Million, making it the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction attributed to a living artist. This also follows a recent major retrospective by the artist at the Tate Modern in London in 2017 which was publicly acclaimed. The work here presented entitled Peter Schlesinger, is a portrait of the model and artist with whom Hockney had a famous romance and equally famous breakup, documented in the 1974 film A Bigger Splash. Peter Schlesinger features as a model in a number of Hockney s most famous paintings centred on swimming pools in Los Angeles. Portraiture has been central to the artist s practice since his teenage years, and as the artist has noted about his own practice: Depicting people has also been a way of finding solutions to other artistic problems I tend to do that at times when I feel a little lost, searching around. This work documents the artists ongoing relationship with Schlesinger around two years after the fact of the breakup, and appears to capture the closed nature of the relationship. Schlesinger s expression is both hard and searching, his jaw locked in in a silent reticence. The subject is also cropped out of the image from the shoulders down, juxtaposing an area of the work that is naturalistic from a space that is more abstract and conceptual. The work has an elegiac quality in its blanked out white abstract segment, there are two notable drip marks where the drawing medium has been dissolved and painted onto the stone lithograph and then allowed to run down, suggesting tears or wounds

107 P213 Walter Whall Battiss (South Africa, ) Garden, Men and Birds incised wood block, signed, 13.5 x 19.5 cm R20,000 - R30,000 The work here presented is a woodblock incised in the production of a woodcut print. An enlarged reproduction of the image is featured on page four of Walter Battiss: I Invented Myself. Here we see a meditation on an Edenic space, exhibiting two powerfully built male figures with aquiline faces referencing classical Greek conventions of male beauty. The use of line also clearly displays the simplifying logic of Picasso s style of engraving as exemplified in the Vollard suite (represented on this auction at Lot P86: Le Repos du sculpteur devant le jeune cavalier). Picasso s work had had a powerful impact on the artist ever since their first encounters in The work here presented was produced at a time when Battiss began to actively explore the use of erotica as a political statement against censorship in art, and although Battiss nudes are erotic and playful they are also acts of healthy subversion in the face of an oppressive state legislature in South Africa, in addition to the voluntary and oppressive social mores of white middle class protestant South Africa, which tended to reinforce these notions by acts of social policing as well. Depicting an Edenic world inhabited by Adam and Steve, would have been construed as a kind of treasonous homosexual propaganda and qualified for censorship. Battiss went on to focus a lot of his political erotica on the genital region in more pointedly naked works, but Garden, Men and Birds is decidedly more restrained, which emphasizes the psychological relationship between the two male figures. In a productive sense I think this work can be seen as a kind of ode on Greek Love, as the Victorians used to call it
