2 Intro The fruit in a bowl, flowers in a vase or table set at a distance depict a form of art known as still life, or Nature Morte in French. Finding its roots in the Greek mosaics of the 16th century, this art genre is still very popular. Still lifes are known to depict a thoughtful composition of everyday objects, however they are often filled with great personal or cultural significance. On the local scene artists like Ronel Human, Hanien Conradie and Oliver Scarlin are well-known names. Each of these artists are unique in the sense that they have different academic backgrounds; Scarlin spending a number of years in Italy, Conradie s alma-mater is the renowned Michaelis School of Fine Arts while Ronel Human spent a number of years working as a graphic designer before embracing the world of artistry. Gabriella Orzechowski, a recent university graduate, found a liking in silk-screen and monotype printmaking during her student days. Her oil paintings, aligned to themes like The Botanical, Human Nature, and Unusual Words were the ones eventually rewarding her with the Muratie Painting Prize. Klara Marie den Heijer, another Stellenbosch graduate, identifies herself as a oil painter, fascinated by landscapes and it s feelings of nostalgia. Having spent many years in the Helderberg area, Klara Marie would rightfully consider herself a local of the area. A name worth mentioning in this company is Goé Beyers. Originally hailing from Oudtshoorn, she met her botanist husband after moving to Pretoria. She was a devoted mother and often skillfully juggled responsibilities to make time for her first love, painting. Goé attended art school in Stellenbosch and some of her earliest paintings such as Still life of fishes, Table Mountain, and Pansies were all done in the 1950s. In later years Goé yearned for more freedom and moved away from the restrictive influence of her earlier years. Paintings from this period include Four Girls, Birds before the sun and nude. Beyers name sits well among the South African art fraternity, especially after exhibiting with Maggie Laubser.

An odd creation for some, these bonsais become avenues of personal expression for others. Together with a collection of still lifes from a host of well-known artists will also be a number of masters from the likes of Tinus de Jongh, Clement Serneels and Freida Lock.
