4 4/8 Wall Painting Conservation Introduction The course offers the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive conservation-restoration program of a late 19 th -century / early 20 th -century tempera wall painting in the loggia of a private house in the village of Brusino Arsizio, situated directly on the Lake of Lugano. It is set up in 4 one-week modules each including theoretical teaching and practical work allowing students to participate in all or just one module. A possibility of acquiring credits is given. The course welcomes students and professionals from the field of conservation-restoration as well as colleagues in related fields. Objective The course is designed to give students the opportunity to partake in an intense program of wall painting conservation which includes the crucial steps of documentation, preliminary analysis and initial conservation interventions; cleaning; consolidation; fills, repairs and retouching. It is an optimal possibility for students and professionals to get an update of methodologies used during the different steps of the program. Program The course is organized in 4 individual but connected modules, each lasting 1 week. For each module there will be 1 day of lecture in which the equipment and materials used for each procedure are presented with all their possibilities and limits. Various case studies will be shown and discussed. During the following 4 days of practical work on site, the course participants will be actively involved in assessing the possible actions, performing them on site and discussing within the team the results obtained. The participants will have the option of acquiring 2 credits for each module. This involves a written and oral exam and the writing of a small report. Module 1 Documentation, preliminary analysis and initial conservation interventions July Lecture on methodological approach in the conservation-restoration of wall paintings considering decay phenomena, investigation techniques and action necessary to stabilize them. 1.2 Work on site: mapping; documentation; non-invasive diagnostic investigation (e.g. technical photography, portable XRF instrumentation, portable spectrocolorimeter); assessing conservation needs and technical possibilities for an intervention; planning and carrying out first actions for the stabilization of the wall paintings, necessary for subsequent treatments.

7 7/8 Fills, repairs and the inpainting / retouching of wall paintings according to the Florentine methodology August 2014 Objective In the 1970 s Umberto Baldini developed the concept of retouching proposing a method in which the added color would not imitate or compete with the original work of art and where it would be possible to obtain the maximum level of safeguard for the artistic and historical authenticity of the artwork. The aim of the course is to familiarize the participants with different concepts and techniques of retouching / inpainting and the preparation (eg.fills and repairs) necessary in order to carry it out. The most appropriate binders and pigments will be discussed, taking into account aspects such as reversibility and the type of exposure of the art work. Program The course will begin with one day of theory on the practical and aesthetical needs for fills, repairs and retouching and will include discussions of case studies. The other four days will be spent doing practical work in the workshop making fills, testing different binders and practicing different inpainting techniques. The participants will receive a certificate of attendance, which corresponds to 1 ECTS. Course fees CHF 700 The price does not include costs for accommodation, food, personal expenses or travel.
