2 GOVERNING ENERGY TRANSITIONS 2

3 GOVERNING ENERGY TRANSITIONS FOR TOMORROW Switzerland is planning an ambitious energy transition with far-reaching social, technological and economic consequences. As a result of this transition, industry leaders are faced with significant challenges to redesign their infrastructure, strategically reposition vis-à-vis new market entrants, realize political goals and adapt their business models to disruptive innovations. In this program participants develop a thorough understanding of governing the social and technical dimensions of the energy transition, as well as the competencies required to apply this knowledge at the local level. Specific attention is paid to the facilitating role of utility companies, disruptive innovations, governance structures and regulatory frameworks. Understanding these topics from a broader socio-technical perspective enables managers to align their strategies and business models accordingly. The aim of the modules is to facilitate a dialogue between an international group of industry experts, government officials and academics from domains such as energy, transportation and ICT. Specifically, we leverage the strengths of our partner organizations to equip industry leaders with the knowledge and network to address their professional challenges. Expert input from our industry partners ensures the relevance and local applicability of the lessons learned throughout the modules. While our government and regulatory partners provide invaluable insights regarding the future of network and market regulation. Prof. Dr. Matthias Finger Chair Management of Network Industries Director Institute of Technology & Public Policy École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne «The energy transition can only succeed as a collective effort of all stakeholders involved. Our Executive Training facilitates this process.» Prof. Dr. Matthias Finger 3

4 PROGRAM ORGANIZATION PERSONAL & FLEXIBLE WHO SHOULD ATTEND The program targets managers in the following types of organizations, with the goal of connecting key stakeholders of the Swiss energy transition: 1. Utility companies play a crucial role in facili- tating the energy transition, for example at the urban level through the development of smart grids. Utilities are in a strong position to lev- erage their physical infrastructure and social networks. Swisspower Ltd., the association of the major Swiss utilities, is an active partner in this Executive Training program. 2. Public administrators, municipalities, urban and cantonal energy offices are facing an increasingly polycentric system, as new market players, changing stakeholder roles and technological innovations are challenging existing governance structures and regulatory frameworks. 3. Producers and suppliers of utility companies are directly impacted by policies, support schemes and regulations. Understanding changes to the energy system from a broader perspective enables managers to align their strategies and business models accordingly. 1Get a complete overview of the uncertainties underlying the Swiss Energy Strategy, as well as tools to make better investment decisions under these uncertainties. PARTICIPANT BENEFITS 4
