1 Drawing on Florence will inspire students to enhance their creative thinking and intimate awareness of the visible world. Drawing on the continuing influence of Renaissance culture on contemporary design, student will learn and practice new ways of drawing, seeing, and expressing their experience of place. This three-week journey includes day trips, guided tours, remarkable cultural sites and time to explore! August 22-September 12, INDES credit, 3-week studio-based learning experience. About the Program Drawing on Location. If you ve spent any time sketching on location, you know what a powerful experience it can be. If you ve never done so, there are few activities so well suited to exploring new cultures and locations. Things you might never have noticed become familiar. Details of form, structure, surface, and scale are revealed. Relationships of context, scale and orientation are better understood. The quality of light, movement of people, and even the sounds you hear become a lasting memory of seeing and being present to what s around you. Time stands still. And when you return to your sketchbook, even years later, you ll remember so much more than what the lines and colors describe. Because the act of drawing involves your time and attention, you become more aware, more engaged, and more informed. Sketching in situ can also deepen your immersion in another culture, reveal the intersection of contemporary life with historic architecture, promote lifelong drawing practice, and ultimately lead to more fluent self-expression. A drawing is yours in a way photographs can never be: a narrative record of your experience while engaged in a creative act of looking. Drawing on Florence. As the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence is an ideal location for studying the relationship of culture and social change on art and architecture, and the continuing influence Renaissance thinking has on contemporary society. In fact, drawing in Florence is a pilgrimage to the origin of contemporary perspective drawing methods; attributed to Brunelleschi, the architect of Florence s Duomo. During your time in Florence, you ll learn and practice design drawing techniques, conduct visual case studies, and record your experiences of global culture and design through drawing and journaling. Throughout the journey, you will have guided drawing practice, some of it in the classroom, but with a majority of time engaging in culture- and site-specific drawing activities, including day trips, guided tours, and visits to significant cultural sites. Students will also develop and evaluate design methodologies that hone their observational and analytical abilities, while actively engaging with the specifics of place, culture, design, climate, materials, and people.

2 To better understand cultural-historic influences on contemporary practice, students will study the integration of contemporary interiors within historic buildings. Whle the contrast of old and new is more pronounced in cities like Florence, such intersections are occurring in our own neighborhoods. For instance, the recent development in Seattle s Capitol Hill and South Lake Union neighborhoods provide lessons about managed development within historic neighborhoods, and the value of keeping the very features that originally drew people to these neighborhoods. The case study research students conduct in Florence will benefit their future practice in the Seattle area and beyond. Pre-Trip Activities Pre-trip workshops in spring and summer will give students a head-start with drawing techniques and practices. Pre-trip lectures will promote the trip and introduce key concepts related to Florentine culture and history, particularly Renaissance art and architecture. Study Abroad Activities Overview. The first week in Florence will give you time to be a tourist, get to know the major sites, and get acclimated to the culture and surroundings. We ll have a welcome dinner, a guided tour of the citry and cultural sites, and ease into your design drawing activities. After that, you ll begin to experience Florence more like the locals, study the locations and culture in greater depth, and get into a routine of drawing practice and project-based design research. Lodging. While in Florence, students will live in self-catering apartments shared by 4-6 students with 2-per bedroom. While there will be plenty of places to eat out, sharing a kitchen, shopping for local ingredients and cooking meals together can reduce expenses, build relationships, and make you feel more at home. Classroom and Tours. The AIFS Study Center near Santa Croce will be our classroom during the week, and you ll have some weekend and evening time to follow your own itinerary but not on your own! Guided walking tours and visits will include: the Laurentian Library, Gucci and Feragamo museums, Museo Novocentro, Palazzo Davanzati, and the Duomo complex. Self-guided class trips will explore other less-frequented cultural sites and authentic locales for research and individual sketch study. Day Trips. We ll also take two 1-day bus excursions focusing on small-town Tuscan culture and architecture, including Etruscan influences: 1) Siena and 2) San Gimignano-Volterra. While Siena and San Gimignano are heavily visited, Volterra Rick Steves favorite Italian hill town is less so, and all three will take us into the Tuscan countryside for a more intimate experience of rural Italian culture.

3 Learning Experiences. Classroom activities will introduce new design drawing techniques and visual research methodologies almost daily, with ongoing work presented for review and critique with instructors and peers. Project-based learning, using selected sites as case studies, will investigate design topics through visual research methods. A final presentation will demonstrate your ability to apply the drawing techniques and visual research methods to communicate your design research. There will also be learning games to promote exploration and experimentation, build a supportive peerlearning community, and encourage interaction with local residents. Throughout your visit, you will work independently on a sketch-journal; a pictorial narrative of your experience and impressions on any subject you wish to explore. Embracing the Urban Sketchers manifesto students will: draw on location, indoors and out, capturing what they see from direct observation tell the story of their surroundings and the places they travel create a record of time and place be truthful to the scenes they witness use a variety of media and cherish their individual styles support each other and draw together share their drawings online show the world, one drawing at a time Students will present selected content from their journal before leaving Florence. Assessing Student Achievement Students will be evaluated on the development of their drawing skills, their ability to apply visual methods in investigating and communicating design research, and the depth of their assigned research and personal investigation of the culture-location. In addition, they will be evaluated on four fundamental measures of creativity, relating to divergent productivity 1 : fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. Further, student progress will be rated on a continuum from imitation (lowest skill) to original creation (achieving novel expression), representing the developmental stages 2 of achieving intention in their work, not simply mimicing the work of others. Post-Trip Activities Program Assessment. On return to Bellevue College, student evaluations of the trip, curriculum, and instructors will provide suggestions for improving future trips. Design Studio Follow-Up. For those students interested in doing more with what they learned in Florence, including all the amazing drawings you bring back, a fall quarter studio course is being developed. Details are sketchy right now, but two options or a combination are being considered. One studio option would give students a chance to apply their case study research and drawing skills to a commercial design project possibly a building-occupant profile from Florence. Another option would explore a portfolio-based curriculum, taking drawings and narrative from the Florence sketchbooks through an editing process to create a digital portfolio of the design research and/or personal journals. This curriculum would also focus on the expressive-evocative qualities of your drawings, applying artistic enhancement by traditional and computer-based techniques. The document/portfolio could be published online or in printed form, creating a unique narrative expression of your journey.

4 Why Draw? Study abroad programs offer a memorable way of learning about other cultures, and curricula typically focus on history, language, and cross-cultural learning. You will certainly learn about the historical and sociological context of Florence, though our method of learning uses drawing as a vehicle. But as interior designers, architects, artists, and others interested in the built environment, drawing practice offers many benefits beyond the drawings themselves. Here are just a couple. Career Success. The ability to draw with confidence and fluidity is something every designer should possess if they want to be more effective communicators. To understand a client, business, or setting, interior designers use a variety of visual tools to record and analyze the project components, identifying the relevant factors involved in creating an appropriate response. Drawing has long been a tool in this process from ideation, to analysis, presentation, and construction documentation. While computerbased design tools are very effective, those designers with the ability to quickly sketch and communicate their ideas visually have the potential to guide this process more effectively. Better communicators are better leaders, and being able to quickly sketch an idea or a detail makes you a valuable addition to the meetings where design decisions are made. Creative Thinking. Research has shown 3 that drawing can increase students' ability to consider divergent ideas, identify patterns, model prototypical concepts, organize processes, and use imagery to visualize and present ideas. With practice, students learn to think more creatively, as drawing can actually reorganize prefontal white matter in the area of the brain associated with complex planning, personal expression, and decision-making. 1 Creative Abilities in the Arts Guilford, J. 5 Faculty Bios Dan Beert Dan has devoted over 20 years to helping interior design students achieve their potential and goals. He holds a BFA in Interior Design and a Master of Arts in Interior Design & Facilities Management, and has enjoyed teaching courses throughout the curriculum at Bellevue College (2002-Present) and at the University of Kentucky ( ). His 10 years of practice in Chicago included retail, office, and financial services design. With experience in freelance architectural illustration and early adoption of digital design tools, Dan has developed and taught design drawing, illustration, CAD, and visual communication courses throughout his career, and continues his drawing practice in a variety of settings and media. This combination of interests as well as a lifelong curiosity about human cultures and the experience of place plays a big part in planning this sketch-study experience in Florence. John Passmore John is full-time tenure-track instructor at Bellevue College, where he s been teaching courses throughout the program since His BFA studies included painting, drawing and photography, with a particular interest in the urban landscape, which led to greater appreciation of the built environment. A Master of Architecture degree from UW furthered that interest and led to another M-Arch from Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in Los Angeles, where he pursued the Metropolitan Research + Design studio emphasis in digital design. After five years practicing in LA, including three years in the office of Frank Gehry, John returned to Seattle, where he continued to practice design and began his teaching career. During his student years, John spent extended time touring Italy and Florence, and his background in drawing and painting, art history, and architecture give him a unique perspective and skill set for this study abroad experience.
