Thames and Hudson, New York ISBN-13: KCTCS General Education Competencies Students should prepare for twenty-first century challenges by gaining: A. Knowledge of human cultures and the physical and natural worlds through study in the sciences and mathematics, social sciences, humanities, histories, languages, and the arts. Group discussions, quizzes and formal written assignments B. Intellectual and practical skills, including inquiry and analysis critical and creative thinking written and oral communication quantitative literacy information literacy teamwork and problem solving Weekly reading assignments, discussions with questions from Bloom s Taxonomy, quizzing students on art works and written work investigating the world of art and cultures. C. Personal and social responsibility, including civic knowledge and engagement (local and global) intercultural knowledge and competence ethical reasoning and action foundations and skills for lifelong learning Students think critically through personal and socially responsible via artists production of art on technical and social levels. D. Integrative and applied learning, including synthesis and advanced accomplishment across general and specialized skills. Students will learn about the processes and insights of the making of artworks and develop creative thinking skills via class discussions and optional art experiments, exhibits etc. Course Specific Competencies (Student Outcomes): Competencies are listed in the course on Blackboard and vary for each learning module. 3 Course Outline: Course outline and schedule are listed at the end of this document. Course Structure: This course will be taught 100% online and students will complete assignments and quizzes via the Blackboard 9.1 website. Assignments are to be completed on a weekly basis. Technology/Media Component: Students will need to understand the basic of using computers, web browsers, MS Office and Blackboard 9.1. Service-Learning: N/A Course Requirements and Evaluation: Students must be online three out of the seven days of the week. Students will complete discussion forums and quizzes online to show comprehension of the materials covered in the course. Rubric for the discussion forum is attached to this syllabus for review. Grading Policy: Students will earn points in two areas of the course, 1) Discussions and 2) Quizzes. The grading scale is as follows: Grading Scale Total Points for Assignments 100% - 92% = A = A 91% - 84% = B = B 83% - 75% = C = C 74% - 66% = D = D 65% - 0 = F = F Attendance Policy: Students must be online for three out of the seven days of the week. Late work is not accepted in the course unless under specific emergencies. The instructor may accept or deny make up work provided documentation is presented in the form of a doctor s note, etc. Missed Exam Policy: Discussions and quizzes are the main forms of assessment in the course. Exams are not required in this Introduction to Art class. Late Assignment Policy: No late assignments will be accepted in this course. Qualifying excuses are discussed in the student handbook and pertain to, for example, illnesses with doctor s note or death in the family. Withdrawal Policy: Please refer to the deadlines established by the registrar for when students can withdrawal from the course without penalties.
