In a work of art the repetition of such patterns provides a sense of unity Roman Mars- Producer, the 99% Invisible podcast. Pattern can create a sense of unity by repeatedly using a similar shape, value, or color.

Rhythm Works have an implicit rhythm but most works of art have shapes colors values lines and other elements, the intervals between them provide points of reference for more complex rhythms. Pieter Bruegel, Hunters in the Snow, Rhythm in this work is moving our eyes around the image, but mico rhythms are present within zones, creating vast complexity.

Simple Repetitive Rhythm Artists create repetition by using the same shape color, size value line or texture over and over again. Prayer Hall, The Great Mosque, Cordoba Spain, 784

Progressive Rhythm Repetition that regularly increases or decreases in frequency creates progressive rhythm as the eye moves faster or slower across the surface of the work. Edward Weston Artichoke Halved. 1930

Progressive Rhythm Repetition that regularly increases or decreases in frequency creates progressive rhythm as the eye moves faster or slower across the surface of the work. Edward Weston Mushroom 1930

Alternating Rhythm Artists can intertwine multiple rhythms until they become complex the addition and alternation or rhythms can add unpredictability and visual excitement Romanesque era Stonework, Jamb portal and Tympanum, Shelby Abby, Yorkshire.

Rhythmic Design Structure/Grids Rhythmic structure helps us understand how artist divide visual space into different kinds of sections to achieve different effects. Rosa bonheur, Plowing in the Nivernais, 1849
