1 Activity Design Principles and Elements Introduction Have you ever noticed how buildings of similar size and shape can have completely different visual effects? Architects, like artists, must understand the elements and principles of design and how they affect the visual impact of the building on a viewer. Whether it is the intent of the architect to create a feeling of strength and stability or to create an unusual form that will elicit a double take from the public, the elements and principles of design can be used to manipulate the intellectual and emotional reactions of the people who see and use the building. Equipment Principles and Elements of Design Applied to Architecture presentation notes Procedure In this activity you will identify design elements and principles as they pertain to images of structures. For each of the following, choose one element of design and one principle of design that you feel is most prominent in the image and then justify your choice. 2 1. Principle of Design Unity, Vertical Balance, Gradated Rhythm Justification: Vertical Balance makes it symmetrical if cut in the middle. There is unity in the same materials and colors used. Gradated rhythm as the arches are different sizes. Texture, Curved Lines _ Justification: This shows rough texture based on the materials used. This shows curved lines that display soothing mood. 2. Principle of Design Vertical Balance, Emphasis, Unity, Justification: This building shows vertical balance because it is symmetrical in the middle. It shows emphasis on the structure on top and unity because the materials and colors used remains the same.

3 Radial Balance, Vertical Lines,2D Shape _ Justification: This structure shows radial balance because design elements radiate outward from the center. Vertical lines are used to stress strength and stability. The 2D shapes used are rectangle and circle on top. 3. Principle of Design Contrast, Emphasis, Proportion and Scale Justification: The contrast present in this building can be seen in the tower next to the main structure. Furthermore there is an emphasis placed on the tower because of its size and proportion compared to the main building. Vertical Lines, 3D Form, Color, Value _ Justification: The vertical lines used in the building give it a sense of strength and stability. We see the 3D form because of the angle the building is at. The color of the building is a dark red

4 representing warmth but the green on the top of the tower provides emphasis. 4. Principle of Design Rhythm, Movement, Unity Justification: This building shows rhythm because each element is repeated. There is movement because as it goes up it slants. However there is unity in the materials and color. Curved Lines, Color, Texture, Value _ City Hall and London Bridge Justification: The curved lines establish and sense of freedom. The blue color is one of the cool and calm colors. The smooth texture and the varying blue color completes the elements of this building.

5 5. Principle of Design Vertical Balance, Random Rhythm, Emphasis, Constrast Justification: The vertical balance make the structure symmetrical in the middle. There is random rhythm in the way the elements and principles varies time to time. There is an emphasis placed on the angel in the middle and her colors create a contrast to the other colors. Curved Lines, Color, Value _ Justification: The curved lines used provide give a sense of freedom when looked at. The wild variety of colors used have a darker tint. 6. Principle of Design rhythm, contrast Justification: Rhythm is by the pattern of each floor is identical. It has a contrast of the shade of the color blue. horizontal lines, cool colors, smooth texture _

6 Justification: It has horizontal lines representing each floor and the roof. Cool colors is how the glass and side of the building have different shades of blue. Smooth texture is how flat the surface of the building looks. 7. Principle of Design asymmetrical balance, unity Justification: Asymmetrical balance as the building is not divided evenly. Unity as there is a consistent use of smooth texture on the house and a same color for the roof and surface. smooth texture, value, diagonal lines _ Justification: Smooth texture as looks bright and has a smooth surface. Value as the building has a pale color. Diagonal lines as the small triangular roofs all are composed of diagonal lines.

7 8. Principle of Design horizontal balance, rhythm, Justification: Horizontal balance as the left and right sides are equal. Rhythm as there is a constant pattern of arches on the top and on the bottom Vertical and curved lines, space, rough texture _ Roman aqueduct Justification: Vertical lines as the columns are standing straight up to carry the water. Curved lines as there are arches. Space as there is emptiness in many parts of the structure. Rough texture as its made of stone

8 9. Principle of Design balance, emphasis Justification: Formal balance as it looks symmetrical when divided from the middle. Emphasis as the background is a different color. Vertical lines, space _ Justification: Vertical lines as the columns are standing up straight. Space as the area is not small and is roomy. 10. Principle of Design Random Rhythm, Contrast, Unity Justification: Random Rhythm as the sizes of the houses vary. Contrast as house has a distinct color. Unity as the house is consistently made of the same material and each house has one solid color for the walls and roof. Horizontal lines, Color, Value _ Justification: Horizontal lines as the area between the roof and the face of the house has a long horizontal beam. Color as each house has its own distinct color. Value as the colors are both shaded and tinted.ex.blue

9 Conclusion 1. In what way do certain elements or principles identify the time period in which a structure was created? During periods of time, you can identify structures by knowing about common elements and principles they used during that time in order to create the structure. 2. What factors might account for an incorrect identification? Factors that might account for an incorrect identification is if the style of a building had common features like many other style and can be mistaken as a similar style. 3. Describe an example of a way that design principles and elements could impact the function of a building. A way that design principles and elements could impact the function of a building is by emphasis and color as it makes people curious and want to explore the building attracting tourism.
