1 Circles of the Sun backpack by AnetteDK What you need: 15 Sun Circles they are NOT my inventions, but I love making them. You can find the patterns here: they are made by the very talented Lilla Bjorn aka Tatiana. You need 13 or 15 squares for the backpack depending on whether you make the bottom from squares like I did or not. I made this backpack with ordinary 8/4 cotton (170m pr. 50g) and a 3½ hook (E) and my squares are 12 cm/5 inches across. But it does not really matter if your squares are bigger or smaller your bag will be too. I used under 50 g of extra yarn for the top and such. OK here goes. Making the parts of the bag:

2 The front and back are made of 4 squares each. I used the slipstitch method for this. You can find tutorials for this on youtube or various websites. Start in your cornerchains and work your way down. When you are done with the first two just continue in the cornerchains of the next 2 squares without breaking your yarn. Turn your work -start in your cornerchains and work your way down. When you reach the next two squares work over the seam already there. Put together thesides and bottom the same way but they only have one seam each.

3 Then you have this 2 pieces of 4 squares and 4 pieces of 2 squares. If you want lining this is the time. The way I do it is very easy and can probably be done much more advanced. But this is how I did: Grap your fabric and put your pieces on top of if. Cut pieces of fabric for front and back, bottom and sides. Allow1 cm for sewing together on all edges 2 cm for the top seam. Cut pockets about ½ the length of the frontpiece. OK now for sewing...fold the top of you pocket and stitch it. Put it on top of the frontpiece and pin it. Stitch each of the sides to the front. Stitch the back to the sides.

4 Stitch the bottom in place. Now leave the lining for a bit and take your frontpiece and one side. Stitch them together using SC (DC if you are English) instead of slipstitches to give the bag more defined corners. Repeat, stiching the other side to the front. Stitch the back to the other side of the sides. (Now that s a strange sentence. Hope you get what I mean.) You now have a bottomless bag. So stitch on the bottom like before. IF you want an alternative for the bottom: Starting on the right side of the bottom make sc across the side piece. Turn, sc back. Continue untill the lenght of your sc-bottom fits the sides. Put your lining inside the bag, fold the top of the lining and stitch it to the bag in the second-last round of your crochett pieces. Get your top-colour yarn. Start in corner of the right front, working your way over the right side. Rnd. 1 : SC around making one SC in each of your square-stiches. Rnd 2: 1 sc in each sc. Rnd 3: 3 sc 1 dec. - stop 5 stiches before your next corner, 1 dec. 3 sc. Crochet your way over the back with 1 sc in each sc. When you reach the left side corner: 3 sc 1 dec. - stop 5 stiches before your next corner, 1 dec. 3 sc. Rnd 4-6: Repeat Rnd 3. Well, we can t keep having all these stitches...now for some BIG decreasing: Rnd 7: Fold your side to the middle of itself secure with a pin if you need to. It looks like this:

5 Perhaps this drawing seen from the top will help you: The red dotted line shows you where to insert your hook. As you can see it needes to go through the front sc, through the corner and out on the wrong side. Yarn over, pulle through making an ordinary SC. Continue going through the tree layers untill you have secured the fold with stiches all the way.

6 The fold seen from inside the bag. Round 8-12: 1 st in each sc. Rnd. 13: Making holes Chain 3 (=dc), 2 dc ch 1 *5 dc ch 1* repeat in the round making 2 dc in the last repeat. Rnd 14: 1 st in each sc. Now...I have no clue regarding what these next parts are called in English. So I ll just make it up as I go. Please excuse me if it s a bit strange wording! The straps: Make sure you have a looooong piece of yarn for stiching these straps to the bag. Chain 10. Skip the first ch and crochet 9 sc, turn and here we go again! After about 10 turns take your hook out of the loop leaving it there. Put one side of the strap in the left bottom corner and stitch it on using the ss method. Put the loop back on the hook and keep making th strap. BUT now you can just pin the other end of the strap to the top of the bag and try the lenght of it out!

7 Make another strap like before. Now the topthingy...lets name it Flap! Now take you last, lonely square. Make a round of sc starting in a corner. When you have done one round, turn and sc back, leaving the lase half of the square with ony one round of sc.turn and sc back to the beginning. The back half of the flap has 3 rows of sc, the front 1. Lay the bag out flat and make sure it s folded in the sides. Take your pins out. Pin the back of the square (that has 3 rows of sc( the the middle of the back about 1½ cm down the squarepart. Pin the corners of the square to the top just below your row of holes. Put your straps between the to layers as in the photo and sew it all together. Put your needle through the little spaces in the single crochet. Make a sc chain to go through the holes. Sew on a button use the hole in the square as a buttonhole. And we are done! :-) If you make this bag please post a picture. I d so love to see it! Happy crocheting -Anette
