Special Notes on Painting doll with Acrylic Paints and chalk... TYou may have happened on the floor of repainted Barbies - either on ebay - or specialty Barbie Magazines. Many use acrylics and chalks - my personal choice of paint since After painting doll face, simply wrap plastic baggie around face to protect while dressing. **HINTS** 1. When painting doll eyes with light colors (i.e. green or blue or grey or violet)... its important to outline the iris in a darker color to avoid the *ghost* look.

The easiest way to do this... a) Take and put a base circle of black - let dry. b) Put another drop of color (say green) on top of black. c) put a smaller drop of color mixed with white on top while *B* is still wet to lightly blend d) now put a tiny dot with a stick pin on for pupil. e) lastly add a tiny stick pin dot of white for a glow The advantages of painting the dots one on top of each other is getting a slightly *ROUNDED* eyeball which looks VERY real when photographed! 2. After eye is painted... take a tiny drop of fingernail polish and add to eyeball and lips for a spot of color. 3. Another hint... add a tiny line of pink under eyeball and on top of bottom lid liner. This softens look. 4. Use chalks to lightly give a bit of definition to the face lines. When satisfied with the way doll looks - seal with matt acrylic spray sealer and let dry,. Construction of Doll Body This doll was made with the possibility of being a tree top angel. VERY versatile and easy to do! Simply go to your local thrift store - and purchase a tree top angel with a plastic cone already in place. Then gently tear off original angel and save the cone. Use this as a base for your treetop angel. You can also make this a free standing doll with a fimo *cone* base or add to a wooden base for an extra spection *Art Doll*. Creating the Dress Material To create an extra fancy doll - subtle but with tons of detail, why not embroider the hem of this material? 1.

Next grab that special foot for your sewing machine - pick out a gorgeous stitch and run the length of your material. I used a glossy thread for added impact. You can also embroider a stitch on.

Add the exact seam allowance you are comfortable sewing with. For example - if using a machine add 1/4" seam allowance to patterns, sew, and then trim off excess material to make seams lay flat.

3 Creating the Dress Material To create an extra fancy doll - subtle but with tons of detail, why not embroider the hem of this material? 1. Find a very very thin piece of batiste, lightly turn over edge and sew. (The reason we sew is because of the heavy amount of fabric stiffner used and this tends to unravel the glue seams). 2. Next grab that special foot for your sewing machine - pick out a gorgeous stitch and run the length of your material. I used a glossy thread for added impact. You can also embroider a stitch on. The choice is up to you! Now you are ready to cut out pattern. Basic Sewing Directions... cut out material from thin batiste. Sew pieces - right sides together. Patterns shown are to size. Add the exact seam allowance you are comfortable sewing with. For example - if using a machine add 1/4" seam allowance to patterns, sew, and then trim off excess material to make seams lay flat. Lets Make our Angel!! 1. Cut 4 dress gores. If you embroidered the hem - you are set with hem. If not, turn very bottom edge under to wrong side and glue. Next, sew gores together and turn piece right side out. (The reason we used gores was to create draping room at the bottom of dress... but less material at bodice for the nice flat fit). 2. Gather top slide on doll, pull gathers tightly and glue across top of her chest to back. Let thoroughly dry. Now comes the fun part! Draping the hem. (*NOTE* now is the time to put her on a macrame board to drape easier... sticking the pins right through the hem into the cork).

Then glue this over doll s head and on top of raw edges of skirt. 5. Now cut out two sleeve patterns, and turn right sides together. Sew from cuff to shoulder. Turn right side out and gather shoulder. 6. Glue snipet of lace around bottom of dolls arm so you can t see inside sleeve to bare pipecleaner. Insert arms into torso and glue. 7. Slide sleeve up each arm, gather tightly and pull tight. Pin folds into place, spray with fabric stiffner to set and let dry naturally. *REMEMBER* the sleeves are representing *wings*... so let them drape low in front.

Make SURE to give her a bit of shape by her waist - or she will look like a weight watchers doll. Do this is the fabric spray step. 3. When you are done with her.

5 Different Views of the completed dress... Alright! Whew that wasn t so bad was it? Here are some additional notes and tips. 1. Do NOT over drape! This is an angel - <G> not a perfectly perfect Victorian Lady. She should imply movement and gentle folds and drapes. 2. Make SURE to give her a bit of shape by her waist - or she will look like a weight watchers doll. Do this is the fabric spray step. 3. When you are done with her... cover her with a plastic bag - so her hair from wigging won t get all over the dress. If it DOES get all over - simply take a clean sponge (dry) and wipe away the stray hairs. 4. If you have a digital camera - take a few shots now of your doll to get a different creating perspective. Find an angle that looks good on your doll - so you know the right way to wig her.

6 w Hairing her... WITHOUT wigging out! Here is your bonus for the first tutorial! I have wigged her 3 different ways... so you can select which one works for you. When satisfied with amount of hair, carefully lift it all up, glue on a realistic hairline and gently fold hair down onto glue and let scalp dry. 3. You can now style hair - flatten down the back so its long and wavy... **NOTE** if your doll doesn t have a top hole, then do basic wigging wigging cross and follow rest of directions.

7 OR take a knitting needle that has been heavily misted and gently indent a *finger wave* to soften face line... **NOTE** to give her more interest, I added a few strands of lighter colored hair for highlights in the basic wigging process. OR or pick a section of hair - mist it - and wrap around knitting needle. Blow it dry and then gently pull out rod to form pretty curls. Gently pick curl apart for waves. Lastly remember, you can always *shag* cut her hair like the old Farah Fawcett style to give it movement, bangs etc. Hope you enjoyed the lst of 6 tutorials for This is the Jan/February issue.
