The premise is actuay based on a reguar coumn in our onine magazine caed the Design Chaenge, in which a design pane is given a bock ayout, fabric swatch, or coor paette as inspiration and asked to design a quit bock. In this book, we ve turned our focus to shapes and how to use them as inspiration in sewing and quiting projects. The Shape Workshop presents six common quiting shapes used in dynamic and exciting ways: squares and rectanges, trianges, circes, poygons, diamonds, and stars. For each shape, you find 10 different quit bocks from traditiona to modern designs (each sized to a finished 12 inches [30.5 cm]) foowed by a quited project and a fusize quit, perfect for trying a particuar shape out on a arger-scae project. ong your journey you earn appiqué, machine piecing, hand piecing, and how to utiize shapes in your projects as we as mastering curved seams with cear instructions, diagrams, tempates, and beautifu photographs. What can you create with squares and rectanges? 1 From assorted print fabrics of dark and ight coors, cut 24 squares measuring 1½ inches (3.8 cm). 2 From white soid fabric, cut the foowing strips for the outer border: 2 strips measuring 3½ x 8½ inches (8.9 x 21.6 cm) 2 strips measuring 2½ x 12½ inches (6.4 x 31.8 cm) 3 From red soid fabric, cut the foowing strips for the inner border: 2 strips measuring 1½ x 4½ inches (3.8 x 11.4 cm) 2 strips measuring 1½ x 6½ inches (3.8 x 16.5 cm) 4 Stitch the 1½-inch (3.8 cm) squares into four rows of six squares, aternating dark and ight squares (figure 1). Press seams to the dark fabric. 5 Stitch the two onger red border strips to the top and bottom of the bock. Press seams towards the border. Stitch the remaining red inner border strips to the sides of the bock. 6 Stitch the two shorter white border strips to the top and bottom of the bock. Press seams towards the inner border. Stitch the remaining white border strips to the sides of the bock. figure 1 I have been wanting to make a postage stamp quit for the ongest time, but the thought of making a whoe quit using just 1-inch [2.5 cm] squares is daunting. Trace them onto tempate pastic and cut them out. Labe each tempate on the wrong side. 4 Trace the tempates on the wrong side of the green background fabrics as isted and cut them out: Tempate on the 6½-inch (16.5 cm) squares. Tempate B on the 13/4 x 8-inch (4.4 x 20.3 cm) rectanges. Tempate C on two of the 33/4 x 7-inch (9.5 x 17.8 cm) rectanges; fip the tempate over and trace it on the remaining green rectanges to form mirror images. 5 Lay out the tempate pieces (figure 17), and stitch them together: Start by stitching each of the tempate pieces to either a tempate B or C piece. Press the seams open to reduce buk. Stitch three sections together for the eft-hand side, then the remaining three sections for the right-hand side. Stitch the two haves together and press seams open. 2 With a fabrics right side up, stack two matching raspberry print squares atop the two brown squares, aigning a of the corners. Seect two circe tempates of your choosing, one sighty arger than the other. Make two curved cuts through the stack of squares, as seen in the finished bock. tip: Circuar items ike CDs, pates, and mug rims make great tempates. The size is not important, as ong as you use the same two tempates for a cuts. 3 Take one inner (quarter-circe) piece from the raspberry fabric and join it with a brown midde piece. Pin and stitch together aong the curve. Press we. Join this piece with an outer cut of the raspberry background fabric. Trim the bock to 6½ inches (16.5 cm) square. Repeat to make a second identica bock. For this circe bock, I decided to not incude a circe at a! Rather, my design bows the circe apart and rearranges its four quadrants. The power of this design comes in its repeat: imagine a quit featuring this bock in a tied design. John C B C 6 Trace the peta tempate eight times on the paper side of the fusibe web and cut out the shapes outside the drawn ines. Press these to the wrong side of the peta fabric, foowing the manufacturer s instructions. Cut out the shapes aong the drawn ines. 4 Repeat steps 2 and 3, using the remaining two raspberry squares and the two yeow squares. note: You wi have eftover pieces to make contrasting bocks to use in your quit, or in another project. C figure 17 B C 7 Use the diagram as a guide to ayout the petas on the bock, covering a seams (figure 18). Pee off the paper side of the web and press the peta shapes in pace. Orange Soda is a modern pay on the traditiona bocks named Orange Pee and Robbing Peter to Pay Pau. The background is constructed using the simpest of patchwork, and the fused appiqué peta shapes give the iusion of circes. materias Tota of 5 yards (4.6 m) of fabric for background squares, from at east 15 different fabrics (the greater the variety, the more vibrant your quit wi be) 4 yards (3.7 m) of a contrasting soid or pin dot fabric for appiquéd peta shapes and binding 5½ yards (5m) of fabric for backing 1 piece of batting, 75 x 90 inches (190.5 x 228.6cm) 9 yards (8.2 m) of 12-inch-wide (30.5 cm) fusibe web, or 36 of the 8 x 12-inch (20.3 x 30.5 cm) sheets Tempate pastic Large peta tempate (page 139) circes 47

Trace it onto tempate pastic and cut it out. 2 Trace around the tempate on the wrong side of 11 different bue soid fabric scraps. Cut out the shapes. 3 From background fabric, cut two rectanges measuring 51/2 x 13 inches (14 x 33 cm). poygons poy-wht?! The definition of a poygon is a many-sided fat shape with at east three straight sides (but typicay five or more). We've incuded quirky shapes that don t seem to fit into a chapter of their own. Here they are: hexagons, pentagons, wedges, and other uncommon shapes that can add interest to your quits. The idea of piecing many different anges can be intimidating. To ease you into feeing more comfortabe with poygons, we have incuded a variety of poygon bocks. Some are made from pure poygon shapes, and some are simper shapes that together create a poygon shape. Many true poygon shapes (for exampe the hexagon or pentagon) are popuar in Engish paper piecing (see page 133). This method is an idea way to earn how to work with poygons. Engish paper piecing is aso a great on-the-go project that can be taken on car journeys (when you re a passenger) or even sewn up whie sitting in the doctor s office. Some of the bocks and both of the quits are made using this method. For more compicated and muti-faceted poygon sewing, try using different poygon shapes together to form a singe arger shape. Geometry was never this much fun! Join us for a refresher course on hexagons, pentagons, and other muti-sided shapes. 4 Starting with a wedge that is narrow-end-up, arrange the wedges in a row, rotating the ends each time as seen in the bock. Move the wedges around to find an arrangement that you ike. 5 Stitch the wedges in order, right sides together, matching the corners as shown (figure 1). Press the finished strip. Draw a ine down the center of the wedges at both ends and trim them to make a rectanguar strip. 6 Stitch the background strips to the top and bottom edges of the center strip. Press and square up as needed. The basic tumber or wedge shape is incrediby versatie. This exact same wedge shape is the basis of the Dresden Pate bock on page 96, but it coudn t ook more different when it s in this modern setting Katy figure 1 poygons 91

8 u chapter four eyes by Tacha Bruecher 1 From each of two gray prints and two orange prints, cut eight squares measuring 11/2 inches (3.8 cm), for a tota of 36 squares. 2 From both a bue print and an orange print, cut: 2 squares measuring 11/2 inches (3.8 cm), for eye centers 4 strips measuring 1 x 51/2 inches (2.5 x 14 cm) for borders 4 strips measuring 1 x 61/2 inches (2.5 x 16.5 cm) for borders 3 From white soid fabric, cut: 16 strips measuring 11/2 x 21/2 inches (3.8 x 6.4 cm) 16 strips measuring 11/2 x 2 inches (3.8 x 5.1 cm) 8 squares measuring 11/2 inches (3.8 cm) diamonds In geometry, a diamond is more commony known as a rhombus, meaning it s a quadriatera shape (with four sides of equa ength). For quiters, a diamond in its simpest form is simpy a square set on point. Just turn bocks on point, and you can achieve a competey different effect! Of course, this is ony one way to incorporate diamonds into your quiting repertoire. Diamonds can aso pay a starring roe within a square quit bock. dditionay, diamonds can be stretched in a different ways to make them as ta and thin or as short and squat as you ike. nd diamonds can be thought of as paraeograms with opposite sides that are parae to one another. In this section, we ve pued together severa ideas for quit bocks and projects that feature diamond shapes and patterns for quiters of a ski eves. Have fun, be inspired, and chaenge yoursef tit your head and consider diamonds instead of squares for your next quiting project! It s said that diamonds are a gir s best friend, but we much prefer ours in quit form (especiay John). 4 ssembe and stitch four eye units as foows (figure 1): Top row: two onger white strips and one coored square from step 1 Second row: two shorter white strips and two matching coor squares Third row: two white squares, two matching coor squares, and one contrasting center square Fourth row: same as second row Fifth row: same as top row 5 Stitch the shorter contrasting borders to the sides of each bock, then stitch the two onger contrasting borders to the top and bottom edges. 6 Use the photograph as a guide for arranging the diamond units into a four-patch bock.
