3 "I fell in love with the bold graphics and rich, vibrant, yet warm colors in Malka Dubrawsky s Simple Marks collection. I also love to applique. The Spheres pattern provided the perfect opportunity to combine my two loves. I selected the circular cheater cloth fabric from the collection as my inspiration. It was fun playing with all of the wonderful Bella Solids to achieve the look which had originally drawn me to the inspiration fabric. I chose four colors of Primitive Muslin for the background. It added the texture and depth I was seeking for this quilt. I chose to back the quilt with the circular cheater cloth and bind it with one of the rich reds." Since my first choice in making a quilt is always applique or some pattern that lends itself to applique or embroidery, this was quite different for me. I looked at the pattern choices and immediately picked the one with the circles. (You did notice that I did not totally go out of my comfort zone the pattern does have appliqued circles!) Working with all solids was at first very difficult for me (I do love a good print). Needless to say, I stressed over which ones to pick -were they going to look good together, did I pick the right ones, all those type questions were running through my mind. Once I decided on the 4 white/ off white background pieces, I really had fun picking the grays and lighter shades for the circles. For the vertical lines I again was in a dilemma. Which color to pick? So, when in doubt, just use all the ones you like! To me this made the quilt special. 5 The quilting is unbelievable! The concentric circles on the appliqued circles using variegated thread with the smaller blending circles using cream thread on the background are outstanding! I have to say that I am so excited about this quilt. It has a different look from any other quilt I have made. This was a great learning experience for me---i can move out of my little comfy spot and venture out to new ideas! You can see that I really, really, loved this challenge! So much so that I made 2 of the quilts. But, the second one is with a black background and really bright colored circles. Again, this is so very different for me. I love the brightness of the circles against the black background. And, I had fun changing the pattern a little bit. Basically the same pattern with just a slight twist! What a fun class the stores can have using all of the 12 pack patterns or just a few. Students can broaden their horizons by trying new techniques and colors. All the participants could be challenged to be creative with this choices of pattern and fabric colors. I can just see all the quilts being displayed in the store inviting other customers to want to join the next class!" 8 "I think this was a great exercise for a beginner like myself. It got me thinking about color and was a good cutting exercise. I love to play with color and without a coordinated line I was left wide open with all 208 possibilities! ; ) 12 colors is A LOT of choices. I did not have any specific piece for inspiration although I think choosing a favorite print or photo is a good starting point. I knew I wanted my colors to be warm but still saturated in feeling and multi-colored. It s a slightly dusty, jewel toned rainbow!" 9 "I almost never work with solids, this was a first quilt I have ever made without a print in it, very out of my comfort zone. I am totally a Reproduction follower except for the baby quilts or kids quilts I make. The color combination came from my oldest granddaughter, Olivia, who is 9. She picked these colors from a color card I brought home for her to pick fabric for a quilt she and I are sewing together. I would have never picked this color combination. I had a childhood incident about a blue and green outfit for Easter, very long story. I learned I do like clean modern, easy designs and simple can be elegant. I make a lot of quilts with 2 sided bindings, I love reversible quilts that are very different on both sides." For my stacked quilt I went with a scrappy feel by using all reds and naturals. I picked a fun floral to go on the back and decided to bind the quilt in an unexpected color, green. This type of color range will give you the opportunity to mix and match existing fabrics from your shelves and extend the shelf life of your sample." 12 This quilt was so different for me. I do not usually sew with solids. When they said I could do anything I wanted I thought I would try the glow in the dark fabric for my background. I chose to line up my solids like a rainbow so all the colors flowed throughout the quilt. The quilter used a variegated thread which added pop! Yes my quilt does glow in the dark. I love it! 13 Have you worked with all solids or all basics before? No What were your challenges in picking all solids? Trying to make them all look good together What did you use as your inspiration for color? A floral from Cuzco What did you learn from your project? It s okay to step outside my comfort zone Did you do anything different to make your project unique? I bound the quilt in a color I never would have if I hadn t been doing this exercise This was a fun reason for me to use a multi color print on the back. I like the surprise when you flip the quilt over. I choose grey thread becasue the grey background. Once my quilt is washed I think it will add so much texture and dimension to the quilt. This project challenged my color palette by working with solids that had no texture or blenders. I needed something to help my color comfort zone. I picked a fabric that I loved all the colors in, laid that bolt on the table, picked solids to go with it, then pulled the print away. I knew if I liked all the colors in the one print that all the solids would look nice together also. 15 This was my first all solids quilt. Deciding which colors to pick was the difficult part. So many choices I think at one point I had close to 20 picks. I really like the bright, vibrant colors. V & Co.'s line Simply Color was my starting point, grabbing colors that jumped out at me along that same style. To finish my quilt, I'm planning on a little embroidery. I don t like to label my quilts, instead I like to embroider my initials and the year somewhere. My grandmother used to do that on her needlepoint projects, and I like to think it's keeping that tradition going. I chose a Puzzle Pieces grey for my quilt back. I wanted the front to really be the focus, and left the binding and back pretty simple to let the quilting shine. I loved what the quilter came up with! I really didn t know what to suggest as far as quilting, and pretty much left it up to her. The back is almost prettier than the front! This project wasn't a challenge for my personal palette, but was more a chance to let it run wild. I picked colors I liked and hoped for the best as far as how they would play together. I was pleasantly surprised how nice it worked out. Only one or two colors didn t make the final cut. This is a wonderful idea for shops. It will get that creativity going. I like the idea that no two are exactly alike. It gives quilters a chance to break the mold, and make something totally unique. It s a chance to play with colors you like and see what happens. I had a blast with it and know others will too! 16 Have you worked with all solids or all basics before? Yes What were your challenges in picking all solids? Narrowing them down to just 12!! What did you use as your inspiration for color? Paint chips. I sort through paint chips and layout color combinations that I like and pin them to my bulletin board to use for future projects just like this one. Did you do anything different to make your project unique? I changed the background fabric from one color to the same colors I used in the melons. It gives the quilt a whole different look. 18 "I thought I should show everyone that I could play by the rules and pick all Bellas. I could see themes in the blueprint shapes and was inspired by colors according to the theme. For example the Spheres quilt could be Christmas ornaments or beach balls. The Stacks quilt would be great in school colors. For my second quilt, I chose the Peaks quilt. These simple shapes could be mountains or candy corn. I choose a range of happy colors to give the feel of candy corn but didn't scream Fall. I think these colors took on a modern feel and would fit nicely in some of today s homes." 21 "I've never worked with just our basics and when this project came up I immediately thought of the Citrus Marbles fat quarter bundle. I love their brightness. Bright colors always make me happy. My biggest challenge with this project was the background fabric and keeping all the colors together in the same block. I originally picked a light grey marble, but then all the brightness faded, so I settled on black. All the same color in the block didn't appeal to me so I mixed them all up. My daughter saw the quilt on my design wall and said "That is really cool mom, who is it for?" I am going to give it to her so she will have a "woobie" like her boys to watch TV. I think this will be great for our shop owners, what a wonderful way to inspire customers to try new colors." 22 "I do like working with solids or basic tonal fabrics, the design of the blocks pop out more when you don t have the busyness of prints. I choose marbles and wish I had chosen colors that were not so similar in value. I love red white and blue, true American, I originally wanted to create a flag with the design but it didn t look like a flag, so I just went with stripes of red and blue with the light background. The quilter used variegated red/cream/blue thread which turned out wonderful, pulling the quilt altogether. I love the quilt and have made another quilt using the same colors for a Christmas gift. Solids and basics are great for guy or young adult quilts and can turn a old quilt pattern into a more contemporary quilt. Stores can benefit by stitching a sample and knowing the fabric will still be available for kitting and can use the sample to inspire others to go basic or modern in their quilt making." 24 Quilts Blueprint Which colors will you choose? 6patterns with endless possibilites! Recently some of the staff of Moda fabrics took part in a 12 pack quilt challenge. Each person chose 1 of the 6 blueprint patterns. The next challenge was to choose 12 Bella solids to create their own version of the pattern. A mix of staff participated from sales team to the marketing department to customer service which resulted in a wide range of styles and colors. This program was designed to do the following: Offer blueprint patterns that can be used and reused. Use 12 prints and a background The 12 prints are fat quarters making each quilt easy to kit. Quilts are designed for all moda fabrics Bella Solids, Moda Marbles, Basics, Prints, Themed and Holiday. The piecing and cutting are easy, making these projects perfect for all sewing levels. To show color options for each quilt to inspire shops with the variety of options. The Rules were loose on this challenge. What started out to be mainly Bella solids quickly turned into a variety of basic fabrics. We encouraged everyone to work outside of their comfort zone and to shared their experience with us. Many of the stitchers had not worked with all solids prior to this challenge, so this took on a life of its own with things like I have over 200 colors to choose from, where do I start? TIps for Picking Fabrics: Start by picking your favorite fabric in the store. Choose one with lots of colors. Lay the bolt on the cutting table and start to choose fabrics that match the multi colored print. Once the color selection is complete, take away the multi colored bolt and you will have a nice group of fabrics that work together. If they loved the print that will give them the confidence they need to match other fabrics. Who knows they may want to use the multi colored print to be used as the backing. I encourage you to do this same exercise/challenge with your staff. In turn they will do it with your customers. This lesson can benefit everyone and create confidence in picking fabrics for any projects. We have included hangtags as a printable pdf to tie and bundle your fat quarters. Make it a challenge and let some of your staff pick the fabrics and add their name to the bundle. For example, Susan s Picks!, etc. Each of the patterns and sheets of hangtags are available on Moda's Customer Workstation. Type in the links below to print as many copies as you like. Patterns are free to shops to use for handouts, classes, kits and other promotions. Please feel free to charge for the patterns. We have a suggested retail price on each. It is our hope that your staff and customers have as much fun with this challenge as we did! Spheres Stacks Patches Criss Cross Melons Lissa Alexander Director of Marketing Stay Connected Peaks
