All cutting is based on 42 WOF. From Fabric A ( BEI1) cut: * (2) 3 ½ x WOF strips; sub-cut into (4) 3 ½ x 6 ½ and (12) 3 ½ x 3 ½. * (1) 3 7/8 x WOF strip; sub-cut into (4) 3 7/8 x 3 7/8. * (2) 5 3/8 x WOF strips; sub-cut into (14) 5 3/8 x 5 3/8. Cut (4) squares in half diagonally into (8) triangles. * (8) 2 ½ x WOF strips. * (2) 6 ½ x WOF strips; sub-cut into (8) 6 ½ squares. * (7) 1 ½ x WOF strips. From Fabric B ( DKBLU1) cut: * (2) 3 ½ x WOF strips; sub-cut into (4) 3 ½ x 6 ½ and (8) 3 ½ x 3 ½. * (5) 2 7/8 x WOF strips; sub-cut into (64) 2 7/8 x 2 7/8. From Fabric C ( RED1) cut: * (1) 3 7/8 x WOF strip; sub-cut into (4) 3 7/8 x 3 7/8. * (4) 2 ½ x WOF strips; sub-cut into (64) 2 ½ x 2 ½. From Fabric D ( BLU1) cut: * (1) 3 ½ x WOF strip; sub-cut into (4) 3 ½ x 3 ½. * (2) 3 3/8 x WOF strips. Sub-cut into (14) 3 3/8 x 3 3/8. Quilt Size: 72 x 72 Level: Intermediate 1 * (5) 2 7/8 x WOF strips; sub-cut into (64) 2 7/8 x 2 7/8. From Fabric E ( BEIBLU1) cut: * (2) 9 7/8 x 9 7/8 squares. Cut each once diagonally into (4) triangles. * (1) 6 ½ x 6 ½ square. From Fabric F ( DKBLU1) cut: * (2) 8 3/8 x 8 3/8 squares; cut both once diagonally into (4) triangles. * (2) 3 3/8 x WOF strips; sub-cut into (18) 3 3/8 x 3 3/8. Cut (4) of the squares in half diagonally into (8) triangles. From Fabric G ( RED1) cut: * (2) 5 3/8 x WOF strips; sub-cut into (10) 5 3/8 x 5 3/8. From Fabric H ( RED1) cut: * (4) 2 ½ x WOF strips. * (8) 2 ¼ x WOF strips for the binding. From Fabric I ( BRO1) cut: * (6) 2 ½ x WOF strips; sub-cut into (96) 2 ½ x 2 ½. From Fabric J ( DKBLU1) cut: * (4) 5 ½ x 78 ½ along the length of fabric from the larger border stripe. General piecing instructions for Half-Square Triangle Units (HST) and Flying Geese Units (FGU). Half Square Triangle Units 1. Draw a diagonal line on the backs of all of the lighter squares indicated in the instructions. 2. Place the second square, right sides together. Sew ¼ on each side of the diagonal line. Cut apart on the drawn line to create (2) HSTs. Press to the darker fabric. Square should equal the measurement indicated. Trim if necessary. Sew 1/4 on each side of line Cut on diagonal line Press to darker fabric

3 General instructions for construction of the Flying Geese units (FGU). 3. Draw a diagonal line on the backs of the small squares indicated. Place a square, right sides together on one end of the rectangle. Sew along diagonal line. Trim seam to 1/4. Press to small triangle. Repeat on other end of the rectangle with another small square. 8. Make (4) Unit 2 with the FGU A and FGU B. Press in the direction of the arrow. Make 4 Unit 2 9. Following the illustration, sew the (4) Unit 1, (4) Unit 2 and a 6 ½ Fabric E square. Press in the direction of the arrows to complete the Center block. Block should equal 18 1/2 square. Trim Sew on line. Center Block 4. Following the HST general piecing directions, make (8) HST with the (4) 3 7/8 Fabric A and (4) 3 7/8 Fabric C squares. HST should equal 3 ½ square. Make 4 A 6. Make (4) FGU B units with the 3 ½ x 6 ½ Fabric B rectangles and 3 ½ Fabric A squares. FGU should equal 3 ½ x 6 ½. Make 4 Unit 1 Make 8 5. Following the FGU general piecing directions, make (4) FGU A units with the 3 ½ x 6 ½ Fabric A rectangles and 3 ½ Fabric B squares. FGUs should equal 3 ½ x 6 ½. Make 4 B 7. Make (4) Unit 1 with (2) HSTs, (1) 3 ½ Fabric A square and (1) 3 ½ Fabric D square. Press in the direction of the arrows. Corner Unit Following the instructions for creating HSTs, make (28) HSTs with the (14) 3 3/8 Fabric D and Fabric F squares. Press to Fabric F. HSTs should equal 3 square. 11. Sew (3) HSTs together following the illustration. Make (4) D/F right units. Sew a 3 3/8 Fabric F triangle to the right side. Make 4 D/F Right Units 12. Sew (4) HSTs together following the illustration. Make (4) D/F left units. Sew a 3 3/8 Fabric F triangle to the left side. 2 Make 4 D/F Left Units

4 12. Sew a D/F Right unit to the right side of an 8 3/8 Fabric F triangle. Press to large triangle. 13. Sew a D/F Left unit to the left side of an 8 3/8 Fabric F triangle. Press to large triangle. Make (4) Corner Unit Matching centers, sew a Corner unit 1 to each side of the center block. Press to corner unit. Unit should equal 25½ square. Make 4 Corner Unit Sew an A/G Right unit to the right side of a 9 7/8 Fabric E triangle. Press to large triangle. 19. Sew an A/G Left unit to the left side. Press to large triangle. Make 4 Corner Unit 2s. 20. Matching centers, sew a Corner unit 2 to each side of the center block. Press to corner unit. Quilt center should equal 36 ½ square. Corner Unit Following the instructions for creating HSTs make (20) HSTs with the (10) 5 3/8 Fabric A and Fabric G squares. Press to Fabric G. HSTs should equal 5 square. 16. Sew (2) HSTs together following the illustration. Make four A/G right units. Sew a 5 3/8 Fabric A triangle to the right side. Make 4 A/G Right Units Border Construction Border Unit Trim the (8) Fabric A and (4) Fabric H 2 ½ strips to 2 ½ x 36 ½. 22. Sew (2) 2 ½ Fabric A strips to each side of (1) 2 ½ Fabric H strip. Press to Fabric H. Make (4) border 1 units. 17. Sew (3) HSTs together following the illustration. Make four A/G left units. Sew a 5 3/8 Fabric A triangle to the left side. Make 4 A/G Left Units Sew a Border 1 section to opposite sides of the quilt center. Press to borders. (Illustration for step 22 is on the following page.)

5 24. Sew a 6 ½ Fabric A square to each short end of the remaining (2) Border 1 units. Press to border strips. Matching centers and ends, sew to the top and bottom of the quilt center. Press to borders. Use the quilt layout illustration on the following page for the remainder of the directions. 28. Sew a pieced border to opposite sides of the quilt. Press to inner border. 29. Sew a 6½ Fabric A square to each short end of the remaining (2) pieced borders. Press to square. Matching centers and ends, sew these to the top and bottom of the quilt. Borders 3 and 4 Mitered borders 30. Sew the (7) 1 ½ Fabric A strips short ends together with diagonal seams. Press seams open. Trim the long strip to (4) 1 ½ x 64 ½. 31. Matching centers, sew the (4) 1 ½ x 64 ½ Fabric A strips to the (4) 5 ½ x 78 ½ Fabric J strips. Border Unit 2 (Pieced blocks) 25. Following the instructions for creating HSTs, make (128) HSTs with the (64) 2 7/8 Fabric B and Fabric D squares. Press to Fabric D. HSTs should equal 2 ½ square. 26. Sew (4) HSTs, (2) 2 ½ Fabric C squares, and (3) 2 ½ Fabric I squares, following the illustration, to make (32) pieced block border units. Press in the direction of the arrows. Units should equal 6 ½ square. Make 32 Block Border Units 27. Sew (8) pieced blocks together rotating the blocks as illustrated. Press seams in one direction. Make (4) Border Unit 2. Border should equal 48 ½ in length. 32. Measure the quilt top from top to bottom through the center and divide this measurement in half. Then, measuring from center out, mark this length on each end of the border strips with a pin on the Fabric A side. 33. Right sides together, pin the border strip to the top of the quilt, matching centers and the ends of quilt top to the pins on ends of the border strip. Stitch the border to the quilt top, starting and stopping stitching ¼ from each corner of the quilt top. Back stitch at each end to lock stitches. Repeat with the other three borders, first the bottom then the two sides. Press seams toward the borders. 34. To miter the borders, fold the quilt in half diagonally so that adjacent border strips are directly on top of one another and the seams nest together. Place your rotary ruler on the fold of the quilt so that the long edge is against the fold and the 45 degree line is on the border seam. Draw a line from the corner of the quilt top to the outside edge of the border. Pin the borders together. Sew along the drawn line, back stitching at the corner intersections. Trim seam to ¼ and press open. Repeat to miter each corner. 4

6 Quilt Layout Finishing 35. Prepare an 80 x 80 backing piece. Layer top, batting, and pieced backing and quilt as desired. 36. Sew the (8) 2 ¼ Fabric H strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Fold and press the resulting long strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Stitch to the quilt front, matching raw edges and mitering the corners. 37. Fold the binding to the quilt underside and hand-stitch the folded edge to the quilt back.
