May June 2012 Tzouhalem Spinners and Weavers Guild Newsletter Hello Spinners and Weavers, Did you hear a heavy thud on the doorstep of your inbox? Here is your wrap-up newsletter for the past two months. If the springs are sagging on your computer, it s because we have been a very busy guild! I have to apologize for the presumption of wrapping May into June. I ve been fighting the buttercup wars. Much the worse for wear I have raised a white flag and retreated from the battlefield. Next year I will expand my fiber usage in the garden. My garlic bed has been nestled under discarded alpaca leg fibre all winter. Look! no buttercups! May all your fiber adventures flourish this well! 1
May 22 -Textile Day with Jane Stafford In January of 2011 Jane Stafford travelled to India for one month with the Maiwa Foundation and had the great privilege of observing some of India s finest Sari weavers and block printers. During her trip she took over 3000 pictures trying to capture as much information as she could about these wonderful people and their work. On May 22nd she shared a few of those slides and stories giving us a glimpse at some of the most amazing craftspeople on the planet. Accompanying this slide show and talk was a trunk show of pieces from the Maiwa store on Granville Island that were for sale.. It was a tremendously powerful show, delivered with Jane s usual intelligence and passion. It was even more illuminating to have a lot of the actual textiles and leatherwork there to further grasp the craftsmanship of the people. The proceeds of the sale came to $4400, 100% of the proceeds from this event will go to the Maiwa Foundation. The Maiwa Foundation was established in 1997 by Maiwa Handprints Ltd. as a private trust to help fund practicing and re-emerging artisans in the craft sector. The fund is to support work that develops higher level skills or to sustain existing skills and has carried out numerous charitable activities for the benefit of artisans and craftspeople in developing nations. Many thanks to Barbara Dowd for organizing this event! 2

June Show and Tell Jan is now officially a weaver! and basket-maker too. This is her scarf which she wove on a group warp with the Sooke weavers. Weft is her beautiful handspun. And look at this beautiful willow basket. Cynthia went home after Alison s Bands with Hands Inkle workshop and got serious. She rewarped with 90 threads this time and wove these beautiful bookmarks. 5
Toni s 3/1 twill blanket which she wove from the huge stash of her handspinning. Also, some spinning from Andrea Lawrence fiber. Cynara s various spinnings from sheep of different cloaks. 6
Spindles! Toni s Spindolyn, Melody s brass version of a supported spindle with nice bushings. Toni s Tibetan spindle and finished yarn. Sandi R s spindle which she bought while caught spindleless in Vancouver. The blue roving purchased on inspiration of Pelle s New Suit children s story. Cynara s spindles made by Rob. The golden wood is Smoke Bush- also a dye-wood - Fustic. 7
Barbara Birke s lace-making pieces for entry into the Sooke Art Show. First, a piece built around Kumihimo braids which will become an art piece of a vest - but maybe next year, as thousands of hours are needed. Then the current piece for the SAS - Trellis, in the making, and a detail of the finished work. Finally her lace piece which was previously entered in a Catalogued Lace Art exhibition in Germany. 8
Anne Marie s fabulous rug which as woven by her Father - she told a lovely story of how her father came from Scandinavia to Canada and resumed his weaving once settled. How wonderful to grow up in a household so rooted in the textile arts. Toni s plaid and pinwheel Towels Evid s one skein, thousand bead beaded scarflet. This is where knitting becomes jewelry. Gudrun s beautiful rispmatta runner. 9
For those interested in the bead lace scarf patter, Evid has shared the pattern: Uses one ball of yarn for a nice length. [ The yarn I was using this time has 125 Metres for the 50 Gm ball and it's about 45 inches long. If you want a longer one I believe that the best way to add a new ball is to tie the slippery little dickenses on at the beginning of the row. ] I've used several of the fancy nylon-type yarns and I think it's about yards/metres of yarn. I believe it uses about 4 vials of #6 glass beads. And yes, one must pre-string all the beads before knitting. But just think of all the pretty colours!! And it's all shiny too. A definite bonus. ;>) I was using 21 stitches but I think that the original 19 would have been a bit better. And Cut fringe lengths before you begin knitting so that you can just knit till there's nothing left. Remember to cut enough for Both Ends. First row, Knit all stitches. Next row : * Purl 2 together, yarn over with a bead on the yarn over, and repeat till the final stitch and then Purl 1 Third row : * Purl 2 together, yarn over ( NO BEADS) and repeat till the last stitch, Purl 1 Repeat these 2 rows until you run out of yarn but leave yourself enough yarn to knit one final row and to cast off. Using a crochet hook, loop the fringe into the ends of the scarf stitches ( I believe it would be into each of the cast on and cast off stitches) and knot well. Dampen the scarf and then lightly and gently press with a warm and not hot iron and using towels to protect the texture. Have a lot of fun playing with colours and DO take the yarn with you to the bead store. Trust me, you cannot remember the colours of your yarns. Never. 10
Sandi D brought her hand hooked rug which has been in the making for 20? years. Originally a baby present, now to be a graduation present for the same young lady. Sandi R brought the apron and Shawl from a Sheep to shawl Event she was part of in Nanaimo a few years ago.the shawl is a crammed and dented lace weave. 11
May Show and Tell From inkle weaving to placemats, May was a beautiful month. Here s Joanne s Noro scarf and shuttle pin which came from a friend. Sandi D s pink wrapped neck piece is very dressy fun. Then there s Karen s inkle weaving from Alison s Inkle 201 workshop, Bands with Hands and Gudrun s linen placemats, with the finished hemstitch lace detailing. 12
Old handwork revisited: Joanne brought a handwoven scarf too beautiful to be languishing in a thrift shop, and offered it up in a draw which Lori won. Alison brought two runners woven to match cups in a Tzouhalem Guild weaver s teacup exchange in Karen brought this lovely sock mending mushroom for socks whose heels may need to be revisited 13
Alison shared the drafts of some of those Teacup Runners. The blue and white double weave is her s. She also showed us her framed Prize winning Digital Art piece from the CVArt Show. 14
Michele s boucle towels and clasped weft placemats. Cynara and Terry s summer and winter runners from a common warp, linen/ rayon pattern, but varying the ground tabby. Karen s cotton and boucle got your sunglasses on? towels with the great extra boucle hit of colour and texture. 15
June Textile Day Annelise wearing her barking fascination headpiece made from strips of maple bark. She s been busy knitting too.. Her vest is in the final stages. Tanis is working on her beautiful handspun vest come jacket. Just looking for the perfect button closure. Sandi has usurped Annelises s bark headpiece and appears to be making plans for a Midsummer Night s Eve of fiber debauchery. I have had a dream, past the wit of man 16
Lori brought the Community woven shawl from Leola s studio. It is a triangle, woven on a wide loom. Successive warp threads are cut from the back and woven across. Random warp contributions came from random visiting weavers. Sandi D s beautiful Nuno piece from the felting workshop. Jan s Merino and silk spinnings for a jacket. Val s knitting fairisle from oddments. 17
Sandi R took the Fingerweaving Workshop, and learned this very old art. Cathy J has mastered knitting in the round. No more 2D hats and socks. Barbara D has been mastering the art of Brioche. Earflap hat in progress. Annelise is building a vest based on the Baby Surprise Jacket 18
Michele s needles eat her handspun yarn. Sandi is modeling Michele s handspun jacket - a Nora Gaughan pattern. Michele s grey sweater is machine knit on the back and handknit on the front. Annelise in her nearly finished cotton blend vest. Joanne s weaving sampler on her table loom. Michele s little shrug, modeled by Sandi. 19
Diane Lee s recent trip to England and Marakech. Diane has some great pictures to share of her recent trip. She visited the Tartan Weaving Mill and Exhibition in Edinburgh, The Victoria and Albert Museum, where she saw the Golden Orb Spider Cape. And then she went to Marakesh. I m surprised that she didn t sail home on a Magic Carpet after a trip like that! 20

Carol James Fingerweaving Workshop Alison shared pictures from last Monday's Fingerweaving workshop with Carol James. She is a very enthusiastic instructor and all went home inspired by her sashes and her presentation! First photo - Carol is demonstrating the 'pinch' move used to bring the lower warp thread up to the top of the woven band. The 'scissor' move takes an upper warp thread down to the bottom layer. Second photo - Carol models one of her sashes. The sashes were originally worn by the voyageurs, some of whom might have kept their journals tucked into a 'pocket' created by the folds of the sash. Third photo - Carol is just as keen about Sprang! Here she models a vest trimmed with tablet-woven bands. Go to her blog at to see this project as a work-in-progress. In addition to members of the Tzouhalem Guild, participants in the workshop were from Parksville, Victoria, Salt Spring Island, and Cowichan Bay. Anyone interested in Carol's books (one on Fingerweaving, another on Sprang) can go to her website: 23
Sheep to Shawl 2012 David and Jan McKinnon-Loop are organizing a competition Sheep to Shawl this year for the Cowichan Fall Fair. This is the draft of the proposal that Dave and Jan brought to the February Guild meeting. Our guild has mustered up an enthusiastic team, with Tanis as Captain. 24
Requests for Guild Demonstrators Bamberton Historical Society Centenary Celebrations. Michele is looking to have 4 people at a time at the event, to demonstrate our crafts. We will be covering from 11:00 to 5:00. The first group should be there by 10:00 am for the set up. She will make sure we have the banner hung and chairs are available. Please let Michele know what hours you can volunteer for and she will work out a schedule. This will be a great day to catch up on some of your unfinished projects and just some time to chat with each other and of course educate the visitors on our heritage crafts. 25
Arts on the Avenue in Ladysmith - Sunday August 26. Alison is coordinating our Guild representation there. A tent and 2 tables and chairs will be provided for spinners and weavers. Cowichan Station Hub This request for demo-ing on July 7th, comes via Evid, from some very nice people in a very small community-oriented group. The Hub ( which is the name given to Cowichan Station by the late Jack Fleetwood " ie The Hub of the Universe ) is the old Cowichan Station School. It should be a very nice time and not as glitzy as the Big Time Folks at Bamberton ( a little giggle here as one of the main people at Bamberton is Maureen Alexander who was a parttime teacher and part-time librarian at Cowichan Station School :) ) Please me to tell me that you're interested in coming for a while. ( I'm even planning to help at Bamberton the very next day if that might guilt some of you, ever-so gently. ) Thanks a lot everyone for your help Evid

Anita Mayer Workshops Alison has invited weaver Anita Luvera Mayer of Anacortes, Washington, to come to the Cowichan Valley in October 2013 (yes, that year is correct) to present one of her workshops. She is an extraordinary textile artist; many of her unique garments are created from narrow handwoven panels embellished with embroidery, beads and other textiles. Anita has written several books and contributed articles to magazines such as 'Handwoven' and 'Threads'. Several years ago she taught a workshop for the Victoria Handweavers & Spinners Guild and then spoke about her 'Stages of Women' Mantles during a public lecture. It's time Anita returned to the Island to inspire more of us! For those of you who are not familiar with her work, please check out the images on the following websites: To give her some idea of which class/lecture Alison should ask Anita to present, she s looking for feedback from those of you who might be interested in attending either or both sessions. Please read through the list of Anita's lectures and workshops on the attached PDF, then let Alison know what your first choice would be for a lecture (choose from A to E) and for a workshop (choose from 1 to 7). 30
