Time to start and cast on!

1 I hope you love knitting and wearing gloves as much as I do. Mittens are great, but I need to feel the grip of the fingers, so here they are, my Tin(y) gloves: easy to knit and easy to wear no real left or right issue with this thumb. As the name suggests, they are related with a Tin, the Cornish tin 4 ply yarn by Blacker yarn, but you can play with whatever similar yarn you fancy. 1

2 Stay struck to the gauge as much as you can for gloves that fit an average 8,5 size women or men alike. A needle size more or less will give you slightly bigger or smaller gloves, what does really matter is the length of your fingers. Try the glove as you knit and make the adjustments as you go. A finer yarn will also make the difference in sizing. Playing with yarn is allowed and welcome, I know you can do magic! Time to start and cast on! You will need: DPNS or circular needles in size to obtain gauge: 27 sts x 25 rows = 10 cm in 2,25 /US 1 50 grams of 4 ply Cornish Tin yarn in colour A aka MC 50 grams of the same yarn in colour B aka CC I used Wheal Rose Red and Levant grey for the gloves and Dolcoath Turquoise for the fingerless sample Using this yarn, that comes in 100 grams skeins per 350 mt, you can knit two pair of gloves providing that you reverse the colour ratio for the second pair. 2 stitch markers (you can do without) Darning needle 2

3 Attention, please! If you use another yarn, one that you have never used and still have a bright/dark colour combination, then I recommend you to wash the yarn before knitting and eventually fix bleeding colours with some vinegar. CUFF Cast on 48 sts in CC and join in the round without twisting. I suggest the Old Norwegian or Twisted German cast on you can find dozens of tutorials on the net. Making a cluster is easy: with the yarn on the back, slip two sts from the left needle to the right, wrap the sts with the contrast yarn, flip the same sts back on the left needle and repeat. Do not work the wrapped stitches, just leave them wrapped on the right needle and go on. You will work them in pattern on the next row. With the cuff done, knit 2 rows in MC. In the next row increase from 48 to 60 sts : * k4,yo*, rep to the end. Knit 1 row in MC, knitting all the yo through the back loop. 3

4 CENTRAL PATTERN Time to start knitting the pattern from the charts, adding the increasing for the thumb. To avoid fuss, the thumb construction has a central spine of two sts in MC, next to them the increases will be added every third row, changing colours. First st of needle 1 and last st of needle 4 are the centre of the thumb. Increase with yarn over/knit to back loop for a neat colour definition. With the central thumb your gloves virtually have no right or left wearing, but be aware that the charts are different for right and left hand. PATTERN A PATTERN B 4

5 R1: k1 MC, yo MC, PM, k2 MC, knit 25 sts in pattern A, k4 MC, knit 25 sts in pattern B, k2 MC, PM, yo in MC, k1 MC. R2: k1 MC, k1tbl MC, SM, k2 MC, knit 25 sts in pattern A, k4 MC, knit 25 sts in pattern B, k2 MC, SM, k1 tbl MC, k1 MC Continue following the charts and the thumb increasing every third row until you'll have 16 sts between the markers and you will be about to start Row 21. (The chart below is an example, the grey columns signal the thumb zone.) R 21: k 8 sts in MC, SM, continue in pattern, RM, put 8 sts (yo will count as one) on a string of waste yarn. CO 2 sts in MC, interweaving CC. R 22: slip 8 sts on the waste yarn, RM, knit in pattern. You will have 60 sts in total. After pattern row 25, knit 1 row in MC, break CC yarn. FINGERS ARE KNITTED IN MC LITTLE FINGER Knit to last 7 sts on cable needle 1 or DNPS 2, leaving the remaining46 on the cable needle or on a string of waste yarn. Pick up and knit first 7 sts on cable needle 2 or DPNS 3 (14 sts in tot.). Knit in the round with 3 shorter DPNS or another cable needle for 22 rows, or till the length reaches half of your little finger s nail. Decrease row 1: ssk to the end (7 sts remains). Decrease row 2: ssk, k2, ssk, k1 (5 sts). Thread the working yarn through all stitches removing the needles and pull tight. BETWEEN LITTLE FINGER AND RING FINGER Resume knitting on the 46 sts, picking up two sts on the side of the little finger 48 sts in total. Knit two rows. (This will allow a better fitting) 5

6 RING FINGER Knit 8 sts, put the other 32 sts aside, being on waste yarn or a cable, knit the last 8 sts. Knit the 16 sts in the round for 27 rows or to the desired length. Decrease row1: ssk to the end, (8 sts ). Decrease row 2: ssk, k1, ssk, k1, ssk (5 sts). Thread the yarn through all stitches and pull tight. MIDDLE FINGER Transfer on knitting needles next first 8 sts from the front and last 8 sts from the back, leaving the remaining 16 sts on the cable or waste yarn. Knit 16 sts in the round then pick up two stitches from the ring finger. Knit the 18 sts in the round for 30 rows or to the desired length. Decrease row 1: ssk to the end (9sts). Decrease row 2: ssk, k1, ssk, k1, ssk, k1 (6sts). Thread the yarn through all stitches and pull tight. FIRST FINGER You have 16 sts left. Pick them up, pick two sts from the Middle finger and knit the 18 sts in the round for 25 rows or to the desired length. Decrease row1: ssk to the end (9 sts). Decrease row 2: ssk, k1, ssk, k1, ssk, k1 (6sts). Thread the yarn through all stitches and pull tight. THUMB Transfer on knitting needles the stitches from the waste yarn. (16 sts). Pick up and knit the 2 stst from the provisional cast on - 18 sts in total. Knit in the round for about 20 rows. If needed you can add 2 sts on both sides of the provisional cast on. (20 sts in total) Do try it the thumb to adjust the fit and again before decreasing! Decrease row1: ssk to the end (10 or 9 sts remaining). Decrease row 2: ssk, to the end if working on 10 sts (5 sts in total), the same as for Middle and First finger if working on 9 sts (6 sts ). Thread the yarn through all stitches and pull tight. 6

7 Repeat for the second hand. Play with the patterns, if you will. Weave in all the loose ends, paying attention to every notable gap where stitches were picked up. You still have time to fix them with your darning needle. Do not cut the remaining yarn too close to the weaving. Wash and dry the gloves, wear them and then trim the bits. 8 Knitting fingers is too boring or too demanding? Fingerless will do! After the charted section knit 2 rows in MC, change to smaller needles and knit to the desired length in k2, p2 rib. Cast Off.
