Over the years, many strong friendships have developed through meetings at these federation confabs. 2 EFMLS Officers Barbara Ringhiser 1ST VICE PRESIDENT David Nock 2ND VICE PRESIDENT Ellery Borow 2ND VICE PRESIDENT Bev Eisenacher SECRETARY Gary Bergtholdt TREASURER President s Message by Barbara Ringhiser, President When I took the office of second vicepresident, I was wondering--what am I supposed to do? What are my duties? And, lo and behold, I found out there was something called the Procedures Manual that spells out what the duties are for all officers and committee chairs and members. However, the last time there was a revision, at least for the copy I have, was April So, I decided when I became president, that maybe another revision is due after a span of 17 years. I realize this will take quite a bit of time and certainly won t be completed during my term of office, but at least we can start the process. I will be calling a meeting of all the officers before the convention to lay out a plan of attack and, maybe we can have a meeting during the convention. Suggestions for the revision can be sent to me at bar5678@ aol.com. After all, there are a lot of ex-officers and committee chairs and members out there. I feel that a starting point may be to review the list of all the committees to determine if some of them can be eliminated. Many of them don t have committee chairs. Are they truly necessary? Walter Priest ASSISTANT TREASURER <wetlanddesign@gmail.com> Carolyn Weinberger EDITOR PO Box 302 Glyndon, MD <cscrystals2@ gmail.com> Deadline is the first of each month prior to publication date (i.e. Feb. 1 for March issue). No issue is normally published during July or August. Non-commercial reprint permission granted unless otherwise reserved. Ain t it funny how time slips away? by Betsy Oberheim, EOTO Chair Sometimes its funny. Others its scary...like when you just realized you were to be somewhere today or forgot to do something important! For example; the convention is only 2 months away and you haven t sent your entry to EOTO for that wonderful person, or couple who do so much for your club. They are the teachers who bring in new members because they make it possible for others to learn about lapidary and minerals. They do this in so many ways, and people will say thank you. But because you make it clear to me, they can be recognized for their contributions and they will inspire many others to share our love of our hobby! Please don t let any more time slip away or we will be at the convention and you will realize you didn t get around to writing that little paragraph that will mean so much to a special person! 2 EFMLS News -- February, 2018 Communication and Involvement Are the Keys to Our Success!

3 Wildacres is on the Horizon by Steve Weinberger, Wildacres Chair Our Eastern Federation offers several wonderful opportunities for its members during the year in addition to our annual convention and associated club sponsored show. One, actually two of these, are the EFMLS Workshops at the fabulous Wildacres Retreat in Little Switzerland, NC. In spring our speaker will be Helen Serras-Herman, the world renowned glyptographer (gemstone carver) and jewelry designer. Helen will give six wonderful talks during the week and you ll have a chance to spend time with her and her lovely husband Andy. The dates for this session are May and the cost (including room and board) is $ per person. We re currently still working on our speaker for the fall session - the person we re expecting is currently rearringing his schedule so that he can attend. We re sure that you ll be delighted when you learn who it is. And like Helen and Andy, you ll get to spend the week at Wildacres getting to know him and learning from his six talks. Like spring, registration is $425 per person. A full list of classes being offered for both sessions can be found elsewhere in this issue. Do register as early as possible giving us your 4 preferred classes since space in all is limited and the earlier you register, the better your chance at obtaining your 1st choice. Junior Activities Rocks4Kids by Betsy Oberheim, Chair Four years ago our club started an event called Rocks4Kids. It took place on a Saturday in May and the attendance was 80 children. Now we have moved it to March 10 and expect about 200!! We advertise, but word-of-mouth brings even more. It is especially great for cyber or home schooled children. Many return and the parent s response is fantastic. They walk around with their kids and have just as much fun! We set up about 8-10 stations and give each child a passport to get stamped at each one. Some examples of the stations are; Fluorescents (the finale is turning out the lights and you can hear the gasps way down the hall), Amber, sharks teeth, volcanos, play dough rock formation and mine mines (take home pyrite, agates, fossils, etc in a bag of sand) etc. Last year we added a free grab bag with about 15 stones and had a table set up where the could match up, identify and label their contents. We try of offer new stations each year, sell rocks at very low prices and have a touch and feel table. Also plenty of (free) donated food. Our program runs from 10 to 3, and we encourage, along with the $5 registration fee, a request for certain times they plan to attend, to control the flow. It is not a money-making activity; but a great fun time for us and many kids!!!! Not to mention the new members it brings in. I look forward to seeing you on the mountain in either spring or fall. Renewals are due no later than March 1 Communication and Involvement Are the Keys to Our Success! EFMLS News --February,

7 Time Travel Time travel is a hot topic in my household. Time: lack thereof, slow passage thereof, quick passage thereof -- always fodder for a great conversation. The topic this time is about the beginning of another trip around the sun. Did the above give you a feeling of deja vu? Well it should as the earth is now beginning a new trip around the sun and it s time to be thinking about a new AFMS Club Rockhound of the Year (ACROY) honoree. This it not a case of out with the old and in with the new. Instead it is an opportunity to add a new name to your club s esteemed roll of ACROY honorees. What is this ACROY program and what is it all about? Glad you asked! Each year, each club in the EFMLS is offered the opportunity to select its ACROY honoree. The honoree will be a member of your club, one who exemplifies the good, great or outstanding effort with support of your club. Your honoree selection might be the best field trip leader in your club, the one who does a great job each meeting with greeting the new or perspective members, the one who puts together the most club meeting programs, the one who makes a fabulous effort with organizing a youth group, or indeed, whatever criteria you choose for a member whose effort illustrates a great club member - you be the judge. The selection may be made by your ACROY selection committee, or the club s board of directors, or a general selection by vote of all the members, or a single individual member may make a selection on behalf of the club. by Ellery Borow, ACROY Coordinator Once your selection is made, note the honoree s name as well as a simple write-up of the reasons why the honoree was selected. Please keep a word limit of 70 to 100 words. Then send the information to me. Also please include your name as the submitter, and the name of the club. My contact information is under ACROY chair at the back of this newsletter. I will them formalize the wording and submit the honoree s name and accomplishments to the editors of the EFMLS and AFMS newsletters as well as the AFMS ACROY chair. Your honorees name and accomplishments will then appear in the pages of the AFMS and EFMLS newsletters. As with just about everything there are rules. In this instance for ACROY honoree a club is limited to just one honoree or, in the case of a couple, 2 persons, as well as one junior member per year. That was easy for rules. We are looking forward to hearing of your club s new ACROY honoree for 2018! The year is already a month on so please send your selections to me as soon as you are able so your honoree may enjoy the full year s worth of time as your ACROY honoree for your club! Hope you enjoy your ride around the sun knowing your honoree will enjoy the title for a full year! Wildacres North Lodge Communication and Involvement Are the Keys to Our Success! 8 Safety Matters by Ellery Borow, EFMLS Safety Chair Time travel is a hot topic in my household. Time: lack thereof, slow passage thereof, quick passage thereof -- always fodder for a great conversation. The topic this time is about the beginning of another trip around the sun. As new officers begin their administration of their clubs for the year ahead there is the usually a swearing in, pledging, passing of the ceremonial gavel and otherwise commencing the new term. As part of the process the outgoing editor passes to the new editor all of the salient documents related to the position. New treasurer gains check signing responsibilities and copies of all financial documents. New show chair receives all the show history files and so on. Now, what about your new safety chair? Safety chairpersons should also receive all pertinent files from the outgoing chair. Your club does have a safety chairperson does it not? In this litigious and safety conscious society sure would suggest having one in your club. Anyway, safety files maintained by a safety person might include a club s safety history, general and specific safety guide books, an area s specific mine, quarry, pit, or dig safety information and requirements. There are numerous general safety guides in print. Specific rockhound safety guides are often available through your regional rock and mineral federation. The club s own safety history is often a vital part of the overall safety picture. Local safety information might include information about specific local weather conditions (anomalies), local mine and quarry rules and regulations, specific safety guides for your show and meeting hall or venue. Other local items to consider are regional poisonous plants, critters, and insects. Safety concerns might also include local area flooding concerns. Lastly, a club s safety or first aid kit should be passed on to the new chair or the designated medical safety person, who may or may not be the safety chair. The Kit should then be checked for outdated meds and supplies... but that will be the topic of another Safety Matters Articles. Seriously, keeping track of a clubs own safety files is a very important task. One might even say safety files are the more important of the time travel items... as in time to travel on to the next chair. We wish you all a good and safe collecting season with this trip around the sun. Please remember that your Safety Matters at all times! Convention Lodging Although at this time we do not have information about the room rate negotiated for our group at the upcoming EFMLS/AFMS Convention, we can tell you that the host hotel for the convention is The Embassy Suites by Hilton, Raleigh Crabtree 4700 Creedmoor Rd, Raleigh, NC Phone: (919) the January EFMLS Newsletter, page 3 which can easily be downloaded from the EFMLS website ( efmls).
