The competition categories coincide with the Jewelers of America competition held in January each year during the JANY-Winter Show. Best of Show & People s Choice winners will receive an engraved plaque; all other winners will receive a certificate. Will Doland President Iowa Jewelers Association We in the Iowa Jewelers Association have been extremely fortunate over the past years, to have had the wonderful A&N Convention Services as our Executive Director. Lynda and Cindi have worked tirelessly for our great organization, and they will be dearly missed at all our future events. We could not have done it without them. That being said, we are incredibly excited to have Suzanne Hull as our new Executive Director. She did a fantastic job at our Annual Conference and will help breathe some new energy into the organization. I look forward to working with her. With the 2017 Annual Conference officially in the books, I wanted to recap all that occurred. Friday s golf outing was a great success, as we had 19 golfers participate. St. Andrew s Golf Course was again a great host to our event, and I personally enjoyed the earlier tee off times. Thank you to all of our hole sponsors and those who donated prizes. Thanks especially to Past President Noel Fiscus for making sure that everyone participating received a door prize before golf even began. We had some great conference speakers this year as well. Topics ranged from lab created diamonds, to investing in key employees, and social media marketing. I wanted to specifically mention Jean-Noel Soni of Top Notch Faceting who flew from San Francisco on his own dime to present for us. His lively and engaging presentation about how he travels the world, purchasing the rough gemstones that he then cuts, was fantastic. Personally, it was one of my favorite presentations in recent memory. We had four entries in the jewelry design contest this year. Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you for participating year after year. The Saturday evening banquet was great, as always. We had 46 people in attendance this year. I have found this event to be a great way to catch up with fellow retailers and friends from across the state. Past President Noel Fiscus had the pleasure of presenting Willie McGivern with the President s Award. Willie has been a wonderful member of this organization. His kindness and dedication to all of us is greatly admired and appreciated. As this is my first newsletter since taking over as President of this great organization, I want to say how excited I am to finally take the helm. My goals are to grow our participation and update the look of the Association. I know change is not always easy to handle, but we need to continue to grow and evolve in order to stay relevant to all of our members. The Iowa Jewelers Association has been around for over 100 years. How we maintain that legacy for 100 more is just as important. I appreciate the opportunity that I have been given to lead the Iowa Jewelers Association as President. Have a fantastic and safe remainder of the summer, and keep on selling! 3 Summer 2017 IJA JEWELER PAGE 3 The 2017 IJA Annual Golf Outing and Conference was held on June at the Cedar Rapids Marriott hotel. The group gathered Friday for the annual Golf Outing held at the St. Andrews Golf Course in Cedar Rapids, where several golfers enjoyed a Team Scramble. Some golfed well, some shagged balls, but nonetheless, a great time was had by all. The day wrapped up with the Traveler s Social and team awards. Annual Conference Highlights! The 2017 award was presented to Rich and Nedra Perry, former owners of Geis Perry Jewelry in Atlantic pictured with outgoing President Noel Fiscus (L). Team members from L to R: Howard Wilshire, Craig Doerhoff, Laura Herbst, Noel Fiscus, Menny Bezalel Saturday it was back to business as the Board convened for a morning meeting and jewelers spent the afternoon attending presentations from Jacquelyn Dewdney of Advanced Jewelry Appraisals, LLC on the status of the synthetic diamond industry, Grant Uding & Zach Witte of Federated Insurance on investing in key employees and Jean-Noel Soni of Top Notch Faceting on from the mine to the market. The IJA Presidential Award was next on the agenda and is considered the highest honor of distinction given by the Association. This honoree was instrumental in Noel s success in the jewelry industry. With that, he presented the award to Willie McGivern pictured below with his family and store team members. The Annual Banquet featured the Traveler s Display area and President s Social along with the Awards Program. The Jewelry Design Contest was also held and entries were on display for attendees votes. During the Annual Meeting Brett Boyson of Boyson s Jewelers in Cedar Rapids and Craig Doerhoff from Seiko Corporation of America in Ankeny were nominated to a three year term on the Board of Directors. After dinner, outgoing President Noel Fiscus addressed the group and presented the IJA Society of Fellows Award, which was established to honor individuals who have made a significant impact on the jewelry industry in Iowa. Prior to adjourning, Noel thanked everyone for coming and recognized the annual conference sponsors - we could not have done it without you! Watch for details on the 2018 Annual Conference, tentatively scheduled to take place in Des Moines. We ve already started gathering information on possible speakers and will keep you informed as the details unfold in the coming months.
