4 NEXT GENERATION LASER CUTTING FIBER LASER The brightness and smaller focus diameter created by a fiber laser provides higher energy density and longer focal length which makes the cuttg process more stable. As a result, fiber laser beams can process a wider range of material types, cludg highly reflective sheets such as alumum, copper, brass, and specialty steels. Cuttg with nitrogen provides a smooth edge without oxidation at all laser power levels. Fiber laser technology provides creased cuttg speeds, the ability to cut a wide-variety of material types and reduced operational costs. Reliability and energy savgs of the fiber laser source result from its simple design. The small number of solid-state components reduces the risk of failure to an absolute mimum. The result is low operatg costs and mimized matenance requirements when compared to CO 2 designs. The laser source is designed for at least 100,000 workg hours and tested for 2,000 hours prior to fal assembly. Durg this period, neither matenance nor replacement of laser operatg elements should be necessary. SIMPLIFIED BEAM GUIDANCE The laser beam is guided by a fiber optic cable which delivers energy from the laser source to the cuttg head without any terference and power loss. The fiber optic cable elimates mirrors that are required for beam guidance with CO 2 laser technology. 5 CUTTING TABLE ACCESS Front and side slidg enclosure doors provide convenient access to the process area for cuttg head service, loadg small sheets and unloadg cut parts. * OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT SHOWN ADVANCED CUTTING HEADS Whitney laser cuttg maches are available with several optional cuttg heads which clude manual and automatic focus along with a fully automated focal length and beam diameter. 6 FEATURES The alumum alloy cantilever gantry is cast for reduced weight while providg excellent rigidity. The cuttg table is dependent of the mache base which elimates the potential for accuracy based on the cuttg process. Zoned dust collection is standard on all models. 7 FIBER LASER CUTTING OF HEAVY PLATE In the 1990s, Whitney pioneered the development of heavy plate cuttg with CO 2 lasers. Whitney now leads the way developg fiber laser cuttg of heavy plate. We have developed production cuttg parameters for cuttg thick carbon steel with cuttg speeds and edge quality that rival CO 2 laser cuttg. Our advanced, heavy plate cuttg capability and our unique Rapid-Pierce Technology make Whitney laser cuttg maches superior to all others for cuttg plate steel. WHITNEY S RAPID-PIERCE TECHNOLOGY Whitney has adapted its unique Rapid-Pierce technology to our fiber laser cuttg systems. This unique combation of optics and parameter control durg the piercg cycle generates extremely fast pierce times heavy material with small pierce holes and low heat put to the work piece. The benefits to the end customer are: Fast Cycle Times Many laser cuttg mache manufacturers still use slow pulse pierce technology. Whitney s Rapid-Pierce technology pierces 1 (25) thick mild steel less than one second, while pulse piercg may take 15 seconds or more. This translates to savgs of mutes (not seconds) per part when parts have multiple ternal holes and cutouts. Better Cut Quality By keepg heat put low, small holes can be successively pierced and cut cleanly. Other piercg technologies such as blast piercg or pulse piercg transmit more heat to the work piece, creatg dross and stuck slugs. With Rapid- Pierce, operators no longer need to haer out small cutouts thick steel. Easier Prograg When usg other piercg technologies (blast or pulse piercg), customers often resort to prograg all of the pierces a nest of parts first before cuttg the features. This allows each localized pierce area to cool before returng to that same area to cut the feature. This process creases the nest cycle time. The Rapid-Pierce process imparts mimal energy to the work piece so it can be cut iediately after piercg without cut quality degradation.
