3 Your presenters Alastair Govier, Partner, Thrings LLP Alastair is a Commercial Disputes Partner in Thrings Bristol office, with more than 20 years experience as a litigator. Prior to joining Thrings, he spent 12 years with Nabarro LLP in London, where he trained. Alastair has experience of a wide range of cases and tribunals, including the courts, arbitration and the various ombudsmen. His areas of particular specialism are in shareholder, financial services and pensions related disputes. Mark is an Economics graduate with over 15 years experience in business development and training, with a particular focus on legal costs, non-recourse funding and ATE insurance. Annecto Legal was founded 3 years ago by Sally Dunscombe and Mark to help businesses transfer the risks of commercial litigation through funding and insurance. Annecto works with businesses, insolvency practitioners and solicitors to help good cases find a way to progress, especially when clients have limited funds. Lucy Baldwin, Costs Lawyer and Co-Head, Commercial Litigation team Paragon Cost Solutions Lucy began her career in costs in 2008 and quickly developed a reputation for understanding the commercial needs of clients. Lucy is experienced in dealing with all areas of commercial litigation and also specialises in banking and finance litigation; having undertaken work for a number of leading banks. Acting for both paying and receiving parties, Lucy is highly skilled in drafting bills and statements of costs but now focusses the majority of her time on preparing complex costs budgets, undertaking high value paying party work, and providing bespoke advice to clients. She commonly deals with the full detailed assessment process and is a frequent advocate dealing with detailed assessments, applications and costs case management conferences. Lucy s knowledge and experience means she can be relied on to achieve the best possible results and a sound understanding of accounts means that Lucy is able to assess the commercial implications for her clients. Martha Maher, Barrister (Call 1987) St John s Chambers Martha is a senior junior and a member of St John s Chambers in Bristol. She is rated and has for many years been recognised by leading directories for her chancery/commercial expertise and experience and is known as a formidable advocate in corporate, insolvency and contract litigation. She has earned praise for her team driven and engaging approach to her instructions and her attention to detail. She is a CEDR accredited mediator and sits on the disciplinary panel of a leading professional accountancy body.

4 Your presenters Richard Ascroft, Barrister (Call 1995) Guildhall Chambers Richard has over 20 years commercial experience as an advocate and provider of specialist advice. He was called to the bar (Lincoln s Inn) in 1995, having previously been admitted as a barrister and solicitor in New Zealand (1990) where he practised for three years at the leading national commercial firm of Bell Gully. Richard enjoys a substantial reputation as a leading junior in the field of commercial litigation with recent relevant experience including claims in or under franchise agreements, post employment/sale restrictive covenants, misrepresentation, passing off, conversion, set-off, the supply of defective or unsatisfactory goods and services and guarantees. Richard has also developed a significant company law practice with extensive experience of shareholder disputes along with more general internal company management issues The nature of Richard s work is such that he is frequently instructed to pursue or resist urgent applications for interim remedies including freezing and other injunctions. Richard has been on the Attorney General s Panel of Junior Counsel to the Crown since Ben Holt, Commercial Litigation Partner, Veale Wasbrough Vizards LLP As well as acting on more traditional corporate and commercial disputes, Ben leads the firm's reputation management team, advising on issues such as defamation, harassment, privacy, data protection, intellectual property infringements. He has a particular interest in uncovering the identity of online trolls and getting offensive material removed from the internet. He regularly speaks at conferences on issues in this field and has advised on claims involving the likes of the Daily Mail, the FT and the BBC. Ben is on the Council of the Bristol Law Society and a member of the Professional Negligence Solicitors Association. John Redmond, Chartered Arbitrator John s career as a Bristol Solicitor started in 1978 on the opening of Laytons in the city. He became a specialist in construction disputes, moving to Osborne Clarke in 2000 to develop a construction team. He left the firm (except as a Consultant) in 2010 to work exclusively as a Chartered Arbitrator, mediator and construction adjudicator. Since then he has acted as tribunal in construction disputes internationally (Provence, Nigeria, Sudan, Montserrat), he has been adjudicator in some 250 adjudications, arbitrator in a wide variety of commercial disputes and a huge number of consumer disputes (especially travel claims). His mediation practice is equally varied. Ed Crosse, Partner, Simmons & Simmons LLP Ed is a Financial Markets Litigation partner at Simmons & Simmons LLP, specialising in handling financial markets disputes and regulatory investigations for financial institutions. Ed also represents clients on contentious regulatory, corruption and civil fraud related matters. Ed was elected President of the London Solicitors Litigation Association in March 2016, and was one of two lawyer representatives on the Judicial Committee responsible for the Shorter and Flexible Trials Procedures launched as pilot schemes in the Rolls Building Courts in October 2015.
