W: barcouncil.org.uk The Kazakhstan Bar Association The Chamber of Legal Advisors of the Kazakhstan Bar Association (the Kazakhstan Bar Association or the Chamber) is a self-regulating organisation based on compulsory membership. They regulate legal assistance and control the activities of their members in terms of compliance requirements of the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan on advocacy and legal assistance, rules and standards of the Chamber and the code of Professional Ethics. 5 Speaker biographies Yuri Botiuk Partner, CANDEY, London Yuri has over 20 years of experience in acting in disputes for clients from emerging markets (across the Former Soviet Union, Africa and the Middle East) owners, offshore entities, state corporations to private individuals. His recent cases include LCIA and ICAC proceedings regarding the disputed ownership of a bank (1 billion USD), and LCIA proceedings regarding a coal mine (1.85 billion USD). CANDEY is recognised by The Lawyer, Legal Business, Chambers and the Legal 500 as a leading litigation law firm in corporate and commercial litigation and international arbitration. Christopher Campbell-Holt Registrar and Chief Executive, AIFC Court and International Arbitration Centre, Nur-Sultan Christopher has many years of legal experience gained while living and working in the UK, the US, the Middle East, and Eurasia. He was the Registrar at the international financial centre commercial court and alternative dispute resolution centre in Qatar under the Presidency of Lord Woolf. He also worked at international and regional law firms and practised broad international commercial law and dispute resolution. He is an Honourary Professor at the M. Narikbayev KAZGUU University, a leading Kazakhstan law school. He is a member of the AIFC Legal Advisory Council and the AIFC Academic Council. He is a member of the Bar of New York State and is a CEDR accredited mediator. Simon Davis Vice-President of the Law Society of England and Wales Simon is vice president of the Law Society of England and Wales and a senior litigator at the London office of Clifford Chance after qualifying in He joined the firm in 1982 and made partner in He was the firm s recruitment partner between 1995 and 2000 and spent a year as President of the London Solicitors Litigation Association. He won the 2017 presidential election and will be the first magic circle solicitor to take office since John Wotton, a consultant at Allen & Overy, who served in

6 Speakers biographies continued Laura Devine Managing Partner, Laura Devine Solicitors, London Laura is the Managing Partner of Laura Devine Immigration Law, a prestigious boutique award winning immigration firm with offices in London and New York providing UK and US immigration advice which has been described as a transatlantic powerhouse. Laura and her firm of 60 staff are rated by all legal directories in the top tier of immigration firms as are the other partners of the firm. The wide client base spans all sectors from finance to fashion and corporates and individuals. Laura is an English solicitor and a US attorney and before launching her own law firm she established the immigration practices at Coopers & Lybrand (now PwC) and Eversheds (now Eversheds Sutherland). Artem Doudko Partner and Head of Russia and CIS disputes, Osborne Clarke, London Artem is a partner in the International Arbitration Group at OC. He heads up the Russia and CIS Disputes practice. Artem is an English qualified Solicitor Advocate who has a strong reputation and profile in his field. A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Artem has extensive experience of cases under all the major arbitral rules, including both commercial arbitration and investment arbitration. He regularly advises on significant and complex international cases, covering a wide range of issues including strategic, substantive, jurisdictional and conflict of laws issues. Artem has acted for major corporate groups, ultra-high net worth individuals, states and state-owned entities. Michael Fenn Partner, Pinsent Masons, London Michael is a Partner in the Pinsent Masons Litigation and International Arbitration Team in London. Michael trained and qualified at Nabarro Nathanson before joining the boutique law firm Reid Minty LLP as a partner. Michael subsequently joined McGrigors LLP (which merged with Pinsent Masons LP in 2012) as a partner in Michael has a wide experience of litigation and disputes. These range from multi-million-dollar multi-jurisdictional fraud claims through to banking disputes, shareholders disputes, wrongful trading actions, actions for and against directors, shipping claims, defamation, breach of contract, tort, insolvency and shipping claims. 4

7 Aigoul Kenjebayeva Managing partner, Dentons, Almaty Aigoul is the Managing Partner of Dentons Kazakhstan practice, and is also in charge of the Central Asian region. Aigoul has extensive experience dealing with the legal aspects and tax implications of investing in Kazakhstan. Her particular areas of focus have been acquired from more than 35 years as a practicing lawyer and include energy and natural resources, corporate and M&A, PPP and infrastructure projects, IP, competition law and dispute resolution. Aigoul has authored numerous chapters on Kazakhstan in reputed international guides and local publications. In 2017 Aigoul became the first Kazakhstan lawyer appointed as a member of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce. John Litton QC Barrister, Landmark Chambers, London John Litton QC is admitted to and practises at the Bars of England and Wales. He is also admitted to the Supreme Court of the Eastern Caribbean (BVI). He regularly appears in the BVI and, on an ad hoc basis, in the Cayman Islands courts. He is a registered lawyer in the DIFC and AIFC Courts. He is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators (HKIArb) and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) with offices in Hong Kong and London He has a multi-jurisdictional practice in the environment, energy, infrastructure, public law and commercial dispute resolution sectors. Steven Thompson QC Chair of the International Committee of the Bar Council of England and Wales Steven has been a barrister practising at XXIV Old Buildings for over 20 years. He has a commercial practice with a particular emphasis on joint venture and business litigation, civil fraud, insolvency and aviation disputes whether being litigated, in arbitration or resolved out of Court. Steven has considerable international and offshore experience; most of his cases have an international element. Steven is the Chair of the International Committee of the Bar Council of England and Wales having sat on the Committee since Sofiya Zhylkaidarova Managing Partner, Signum, Almaty Sofiya graduated with honours from the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, where she went on to gain a Masters degree. She is trained in legal and business skills, and has consulting experience in both local and international law firms as well as in-house and industry experience in an international oil and gas company. Sofiya obtained an EMBA degree at INSEAD in She is an arbitrator of the Kazakhstan International Arbitration and International Commercial Arbitration Court of the Eurasian Mediation Center. She is an active arbitrator of ICC (Paris) and member of Managing Council of KazBar and Kazakhstan Petroleum Lawyers Association (KPLA). Sofiya is a native speaker of Kazakh and Russian and fluent in English. 5
