3 Speakers Profile Essam Al Tamimi Essam Al Tamimi has over 24 years experience in litigation and dispute resolution in the UAE and other GCC countries and is one of the region s most respected litigators. Essam assumes personal responsibility for directing the actions of the firm s arbitration clients across the United Arab Emirates, and is a strong advocate of the use of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution processes as a means of rapidly furthering client s business interests. He has acted within the GCC and internationally as an arbitrator in trial proceedings mainly involving foreign arbitration and is an authority in the UAE Chamber of Commerce arbitration process, as well as UAE arbitration proceedings at the UNCITRAL and International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). Essam has also been a Council member in the production of the ICC and London Court of Arbitration (LCIA) rules. His practice focuses primarily on local and international clients in shipping, banking, intellectual property and commercial litigation, assisting in both defending and pursuing arbitration proceedings locally and internationally. Dr. Michael Bühler Michael Bühler, co head of the Firm's International Litigation & Arbitration Practice, focuses on international dispute resolution in complex arbitrations. He has represented major corporations and state owned entities in more than 100 arbitrations. Michael acts as chairman, sole arbitrator, and party appointed arbitrator in arbitrations worldwide. Michael started his career as counsel at the ICC International Court of Arbitration, of which he was the German member ( ). He is co chair of the Task Force of the ICC Commission on Arbitration on the Revision of the ICC Arbitration Rules (2008 ), a member of the ICC Commission on International Arbitration, the IBA, and of various arbitration institutions. Michael is coauthor of the Handbook of ICC Arbitration (2nd edition, 2008, Thomson, Sweet & Maxwell).

4 José Ricardo Feris José Ricardo Feris is the Deputy Secretary General of the ICC International Court of Arbitration in Paris, France. He also acts as Secretary of the ICC Latin American Arbitration Group. Before being appointed Deputy Secretary General he held the positions of Deputy Counsel, Counsel in charge of Latin America and the Iberian Region, and Managing Counsel. He received his law degree magna cum laude from the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in the Dominican Republic and his LL.M. in International Legal Studies from New York University, where he was Graduate Editor of the Journal of International Law and Politics. He is admitted to practice in the Dominican Republic. His experience in international dispute resolution includes being a law clerk to Judges Rezek and Kooijmans at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. He also worked for the Legal Advisor to the President of the Dominican Republic and represented the Dominican Republic before the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas negotiation rounds. In 2006 he was recognized by Junior Chamber International as Outstanding Young Dominican. He has also been identified by Latin Lawyer as one of the most noteworthy careers of the Latin American diaspora. In addition to Spanish, his native language, he speaks English, French and Portuguese. Sami Houerbi Mr Sami Houerbi is the Director of the ICC Eastern Mediterranean, Middle-East and Africa ICC Dispute Resolution Services, where he is in charge of raising awareness about Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms throughout the region and promoting ICC Arbitration and ADR Rules. Prior to that, he was member of the Secretariat of the International Court of Arbitration in Paris, where he was directly involved in the administration and managing ICC arbitration proceedings. Mr Houerbi is a registered lawyer of the Tunis Bar Association and the Head of the Arbitration Department at Boussayène Knani Houerbi Law firm, which areas of practice include mainly: Corporate Law, Arbitration and Litigation. He holds a post-graduate degree in international law from the University of Paris II and an LL.M in German Law from the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich. His working languages are Arabic, English, French and German.
