3 Speaker Profiles Paul Shenton, Managing Director, Just Costs Solicitors Paul founded Just Costs in He is dual qualified as a Barrister and a Solicitor, completing his pupillage at Hardwicke Building in London before moving to Eversheds in 1992, where he was a partner for 9 years. Whilst at Eversheds, Paul established and developed their national costs team to a turnover of approximately 2 million per annum. In addition to being the Managing Director, Paul also heads up the successful Advocacy Team and has been involved in a number of high profile cases. Tim Walker, Head of Commercial Team, 7 Bedford Row Tim s commercial practice extends to contractual disputes, shareholders disputes, derivative actions, share sale agreements, civil fraud and asset recovery, breach of directors and fiduciary duties and partnership. He has acted in various section 994 petitions involving e.g. a coach operator, a claims handling company, a private airfield, a caravan park operator, a vehicle repair company (complicated by the existence of a lucrative option to purchase the premises for development purposes), a property company and a lap-dancing business. Tim is experienced in freezing orders and other forms of interim relief, providing legal and tactical advice to ensure that Claimants can act swiftly to secure and recover misappropriated assets. Steve Billot, Managing Director Global Restructuring, Duff & Phelps Steve is a managing director in the Global Restructuring Advisory practice based in London and specializes in dealing with Professional Practices. He has over 30 years experience in this sector, having been the Practice Manager and then Joint Managing Partner of a mid-tier accountancy firm. He has particular expertise in the legal sector and understands the impacts the sector faces following the numerous recent regulatory changes. Matthew Williams, Head of AmTrust Law, AmTrust Financial Services Inc Matthew attended Brunel University between 1983 and 1987, obtaining a BSc in Law & Politics. He then went to the College of Law in London and qualified as a solicitor (England & Wales) in Having completed his legal training at the British Coal Corporation, Matthew spent the next four years in private practice. Since then he has worked in the insurance industry for twenty years (the last eleven as an underwriter). He joined GE Capital in 1994 and worked within its payment protection (creditor insurance) division. In 1997 he went to Eastgate which provided specialist services to insurance companies and Lloyd s Syndicates. In 2001 he moved to Brit Insurance and was appointed Class Underwriter for legal expenses insurance. In February 2010 he joined AmTrust Financial Services Inc. as Head of AmTrust Law, underwriting specialty legal expenses insurance business both in the UK and overseas. Matthew is regarded as an innovative leader whose business philosophy is underpinned by a passion for excellence and a commitment to communicate in a timely and no-nonsense manner.

4 Nick McDonnell, Director and Northern Regional Manager, Just Costs Solicitors Nick is a Director, Northern Regional Manager and Costs Lawyer with Just Costs Solicitors. Nick graduated from Cambridge University in 1998 and subsequently went into Civil Litigation with a Solicitors firm in Lancashire where he also took up an interest in costs. Nick proceeded to develop his interest in costs working with some of the key costs firms within the industry before joining Just Costs Solicitors at its inception in January Nick developed within Just Costs where he conducted high value and complex costs matters and became responsible for all technical and practical training throughout the business offices nationwide. Nick is now a Director who continues to handle a high value and complex caseload with an emphasis on Commercial, Intellectual Property, Civil and Catastrophic Injury litigation, including costs management & budgeting, case end detailed assessment proceedings as well as handling appeals up to the Court of Appeal and assessments pursuant to the Solicitors Act Nick also has extensive experience as an advocate at costs hearings and is a qualified mediator. Simon Browne QC, Temple Garden Chambers Simon Browne QC continues to head the field of Costs Litigation and appears regularly in the leading landmark cases. The News of the World and Daily Mirror Phone Hacking Group litigation continues to occupy much of his practice together with big ticket City Commercial costs litigation. He continues his academic commentaries on costs and at the invitation of the Master of the Rolls sits on the Civil Justice Council on costs matters Neil Purslow, Chief Investment Officer, Therium Neil Purslow is Chief Investment Officer and one of the co-founders of Therium. Neil sits of the board of the Association of Litigation Funders, the self-regulatory body for the litigation funding industry in England and Wales, of which Therium is a founding member. Neil speaks regularly at conferences and is often quoted in the media on issues related to litigation funding. Prior to founding Therium, Neil was in-house Litigation Counsel for Marsh & MacLennan Companies, Inc. (MMC) and prior to that, he was in practice in the City of London and with US firm Reed Smith. Neil gained an MA in jurisprudence from the University of Oxford. Master Peter Haworth Peter Haworth was appointed a Master and Cost Judge at the Senior Court Costs Office in July Before that he was a solicitor in private practice in North East Lancashire for 32 years specialising in professional/clinical negligence and Construction disputes. He has been and remains a Deputy District Judge on the Northern Circuit for 24 years and was a Deputy Costs Master for five years. Peter is a former member of the Civil Procedure Rules Committee. He has been Chairman and member of various Tribunals including the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. Over the years has lectured extensively on costs and related subjects to the profession and is a tutor at the Judicial College. When not at the SCCO he spends his time sailing or hot air ballooning.
