7 Olson Sees big benefits in NDIDA membership Les Olson knows how to get things done. After all, he and his partner, Roger Gjellstad, began Frontier Equipment in Williston, N.D., from scratch. But he also knows there are many people involved in running a successful business and a successful organization. Olson and Gjellstad opened the doors of Frontier Equipment nine years ago. We started the dealership from scratch, Les said. There hadn t been a dealer there for eight years. Les knew he wanted to run his own dealership after working at Twedt Equipment in Jamestown, N.D., along with his dad and others. He purchased that dealership with his father Chris, along with Doug Etter and David Krebsbach in 1998, the same year he first became a member of NDIDA. Twedt Equipment was sold to Titan in 2000 and that s when Les and Roger began exploring the idea to form a partnership and open their business in Williston. They surrounded themselves with good people and enjoyed a successful start with their business, selling Case IH and New Holland equipment. Things were so successful, in fact, that they soon began looking into purchasing additional dealerships. Two years after opening in Williston they purchased Glasgow Implement, a Case IH dealership, in northeastern Montana in They then expanded even further, buying West Plains Implement in 2008 with its locations in Beach, Bowman, Hettinger and Dickinson, all in southwest North Dakota, and all with Case IH/New Holland equipment. With the addition of West Plains, they also added more partners who remain employees of the company as well as having some ownership, including David Anfinson, Ryan Moe, Ryan Gjellstad (Roger s son), Jeff Fjelstad, David Colbenson and Pete Peterson. Les position with the company is that of overall general manager of the various stores. He oversees the entire financial aspect of the business, making sure it all works. I work with all the general managers of each store, dealing with all the financials, the inventories, and the personnel and so on, he said. In the relatively short time they ve been in business together, they ve obviously been very busy, but they ve also made a point to keep their businesses up to date. They ve put up a new store in Williston and also did an extensive addition and remodel of the Glasgow facility. And Stanley Equipment in Stanley, N.D., which is owned by Roger and Ryan Gjellstad, has also added a new building. Even though things are going well for Les now, that doesn t mean it will always be that way and that s why it s so important to have an organization like the North Dakota Implement Dealers Association fighting for them on their behalf, he said. A couple of the major issues facing dealers are managing used inventory and the escalating cost of new equipment, Les said. We re in awfully good times right now, but one of the biggest things we face is preparing for a downturn, being positioned to handle that. Many dealers go broke after a good cycle. With the NDIDA, one of the key things they do is keep us informed, he continued. They work with the government and Congressional delegation to help protect us against certain things that are out of our control, and to educate the dealers in maintaining a good profitable business so we re prepared for a downturn when it does come. Another big issue facing dealerships in western North Dakota is getting and retaining good employees. With the development of the Bakken oil formation, Olson said it s difficult to compete for technicians and truck drivers. Olson sees membership in Les Olson the NDIDA as a must for dealerships. We re extremely lucky to have a progressive, active organization that keeps us informed of what s going on in the industry in the state and also outside of North Dakota, he said. It s important just for the information they can get, just keeping us informed so we don t get blindsided. Our organization does a wonderful job for us. We re really fortunate. One of major things facing dealerships is keeping up with health care issues and Olson said the NDIDA does an exceptional job of getting information out to the dealers. If we tried to do that on our own we wouldn t stand a chance, he said. (NDIDA) tries to keep us informed of what may happen... which is up in the air right now. One of the major benefits to joining is getting accurate information about health care and government policies and changes in tax law, he continued. That alone will save money and more than pay for membership dues every year. Members will get lots of good, useful information on a variety of topics at this year s annual convention, according to Les, information they can take home and implement in their businesses. The seminars alone are worth coming to the convention for. They give us a different perspective and get us thinking and energized again, he said. It s about defining differentiation in the marketplace and is geared more toward what you can do to make yourself more relevant and answer the question why would they want to buy from you? Les gives high praise to the NDIDA staff, not only for what they do throughout the year, but also for putting together a top notch convention every year which includes not only pertinent seminars, but also lots of fun and camaraderie. We re really fortunate we have a staff that s second to none. They re so efficient. Being chairman has been a cakewalk because they do so much for us and do it so well. We re lucky to have every one of them. Les, his wife and NDIDA s First Lady, Dawn, live in Dickinson. They have a son, Len, 25, and two daughters, Cassandra, 22, and Lily, 13. 11 National Chairman Roger Gjellstad to Address NDIDA Convention Attendees NDIDA is pleased and very proud to welcome to our convention the Chairman of the North American Equipment Dealers Association (and one of our own!), Roger Gjellstad, Stanley, ND. Roger will update dealers on issues at the national industry level during our association s Annual Business Meeting on Monday, November 14. He was elected chairman of the board of directors of the North American Equipment Dealers Association (NAEDA), effective March 1, Based in Fenton, Missouri, NAEDA provides educational, financial, industry relations, legal, and legislative services to 5,000 dealers in the United States and Canada. Roger is president of six Case IH dealerships serving western North Dakota and one in Montana. He became a member of the NAEDA board in He represents the North Dakota Implement Dealers Association (NDIDA), and served as our Chairman in NDIDA is one of 17 North American dealer associations affiliated with NAEDA. Since joining the NAEDA board, Roger has served as second vice chair, first vice chair, and on the member services, manufacturing relations, and executive committees. Locally, Roger is a member of the American Lutheran Church. He has served on numerous civic organizations and boards and is a 25 year member of the Stanley Volunteer Fire Department. Roger grew up on a farm and ranch near Velva, N.D. Roger Gjellstad He graduated from Velva High School and then from North Dakota State University in 1972 with a BS degree in Agriculture. He was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity. He has been active in the equipment industry since college graduation when he worked in sales for International Harvester. He began working for Stanley Equipment in 1974, and purchased the company two years later. 17 Supersonic Survivor At nearly 800 M.P.H., Brian Udell holds the record for surviving the highest speed ejection from a U.S. fighter aircraft. During our Inspirational Breakfast on Tuesday, November 15, he will share his incredible story of survival in the Atlantic Ocean. Brian began flying at the age of nine. He took his first cross-country flight at the age of ten. Since then he has accumulated over 9,000 hours in a variety of both civil and military aircraft. He was one of only sixty candidates across the United States selected to attend the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training program. Brian graduated number one in his class and was awarded the Air Training Command - Commanders Cup Trophy. He was one of the first Lieutenants selected to fly the F-15E Strike Eagle, and went on to his operational unit where he became an Instructor, Mission Commander, and Air to Ground Top Gun winner. Brian has flown over 100 combat missions in Southwest Asia and logged nearly 2000 hours in the Strike Eagle. He received four Air Medals and three Aerial Achievement Medals for combat missions over the skies of Iraq. Brian s military career spanned ten years. 19 The Performance Puzzle When asked if they are happy with their hiring and performance review processes, most dealers and managers answer with a strong NO! Not surprising, given the facts of the matter: only 20% of employees are in a job that fits; 50% of all managers fail; 75% of all employees are looking for a new opportunity; and it costs 3 to 24 times a person s annual pay to replace them. John Spader s session on Tuesday morning, November 15, gets to the root causes of why this is so, as well as solutions for changing and improving. 22 CNH Capital President to Address NDIDA Convention Attendees NDIDA is honored to have on its convention program the President of CNH Capital, Steven Bierman. Mr. Bierman will share his perspective on various industry issues during our annual VIP Luncheon on Tuesday, November 15 at 12:00 Noon. Steven Bierman is responsible for the global activities of CNH Capital, the financial services affiliate of CNH Global, N.V. He joined the company in 2005 as Vice President, Commercial Finance and was later appointed President. Prior to joining CNH Capital, Mr. Bierman was Chief Information Officer for Fremont Investment & Loan, a $10-billion thrift with residential and commercial real estate lending operations throughout the U.S. He joined Fremont General Corporation in 1998 as General Manager for the firm s Syndicated Lending Group, and was later promoted to Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Bierman s experience also includes ten years with General Electric (GE) Capital, where he contributed to several key growth initiatives, including the firm s $2.5-billion acquisition of Gelco Corporation and the joint venture with Penske Truck Leasing. He later transitioned into commercial lending for GE Capital, where he served as a coleader for risk management in the western United States. Steven Bierman Mr. Bierman holds a bachelor s degree in accounting from Texas A&M University and is a Certified Public Accountant. During the VIP Luncheon it will also be our pleasure to introduce and recognize each of our fine convention sponsors. NDIDA is grateful to have so much support from our many industry friends.
