8 Education Outreach PE 3 workshops move into Pennsylvania In early February, two very enthusiastic individuals left the ice and snow in Pennsylvania to come to Houston to receive personalized training on the Offshore Energy Center s Project E 3 : Expanding Energy Education curriculum guide. Bill desrosiers, external affairs coordinator for Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation, and Melissa Turlip, president, Junior Achievement of NEPA, Inc., JA Mericle Family Center for Enterprise Education, spent three days with Doris Tomas, OEC s education director and Joy Sloan, OEC s education programs assistant to learn about the PE 3 workshops. Melissa first learned about the OEC s education programs when she attended Houston s Energy Day in October and met Donna Wheeler, the OEC s MOLU manager. Donna explained the three initiatives of the Offshore Energy Center to Melissa and thus began the relationship. Through the generosity of Cabot Oil and Gas Corporation, Bill and Melissa traveled to Houston to learn as much as possible about the PE 3 workshops and the Mobile Oilfield Learning Unit (MOLU). Their training consisted of hands-on exercises with many of the 50 activities in the PE 3 guide and a visit to the Offshore Drilling Rig Museum. After the three-day intensive study, they headed back to Pennsylvania ready to offer workshops on the OEC s behalf. The OEC has provided them with a Playing with Petroleum Kit and Knowledge Box as well as PE 3 guides for their participants. On Cabot s Bill desrosiers and Junior Achievement s Melissa Turlip left the ice and snow to train with the OEC in order to present the OEC s programs in Northeastern Pennsylvania. March 6, the Bill and Melissa Road Show held their first workshop for 24 teachers in the Susquehanna County region. The teacher participants responded with great reviews of the program and are anxious to have the MOLU in their schools. Melissa and Bill are in the process of arranging visits for 20 schools in seven Pennsylvania counties including: Susquehanna, Wyoming, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wayne, Lycoming, and Dauphin. These visits will potentially impact more than 4,000 students. Both MOLUs continue to roll The success of and demand for the Mobile Oilfield Learning Units (MOLU) continues to grow, not only within Texas but in other states as well. Both units are booked through the end of the school year with very few openings. If you are interested in a MOLU visit, now or next school year, please act quickly as the spaces are limited. Contact Donna Wheeler at or at dwheeler@oceanstaroec.com. Perhaps two young men are discovering the joys of being an engineer. Visits during the spring semester included: CHEVRON: Funded one Cypress Fairbanks ISD school visit CONOCOPHILLIPS: Funded five visits in the Houston area. SCHLUMBERGER: Funded two visits to Harding Elementary and Shirley Lane Elementary Schools in Bakersfield, CA AERA: funded a visit at West Park Center in Ventura, CA CALIFORNIA RESOURCES CORPORATION: Funded a visit to Richland Junior High in Shafter, CA ENERGY PARTNER S FUND: Funded 11 visits in California. 9 Education Outreach OEC participates in Mind Trekkers at San Jacinto College The Offshore Energy Center was invited to participate in the Michigan Technological University s Mind Trekkers Event held March at San Jacinto College s Central campus. OEC s Doris Tomas, Peggy Cole, Trina Claire and Donna Wheeler led literally thousands of students in activities either in making a polymer (better known as slime to the kids) and microfossil rubbings. Thursday evening was open to the public and although activities were available and utilized, there was more time for discussions about the Ocean Star Museum. Approximately 8,000 sixth graders from area schools participated including LaPorte, Deer Park, Channelview, Galena Park, Sheldon and Pasadena. Michigan Technological University s Mind Trekkers is a traveling festival that uses hands-on activities to encourage learning and exploration of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields. Mind Trekkers STEM Road Shows bring the WOW! of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to the hands and minds of K-12 students under the inspirational guidance of the Mind Trekkers team consisting of undergrad and graduate students. In the program, Michigan Tech student volunteers demonstrate scientific principles in an appealing way using hands-on activities. The target audience for the program is middle and high school students. Mind Trekkers events take place in a non-traditional atmosphere similar to a carnival in which all of the activities relate to STEM. The Mind Trekkers team members act as role models and near-peer mentors as they help students define their interests and aptitudes in these high-energy events full of activities lasting between 30 seconds to 3 minutes. Three early arrivals get the jump on the crowds. Galena Park ISD students are very pleased with their slime. OEC s Donna Wheeler and Trina Claire man the booth. Teacher workshop in Baton Rouge Kudos for Teacher workshops The OEC continues to enjoy success with its Project E 3 : Expanding Energy Education workshops. In the first quarter of 2015, 16 workshops have been held including four for gifted and talented. 10 News welcomes senior military officers By Trina Claire, Programs Manager, In January of every year, a group of similarly dressed men and women arrive at the museum, their notable demeanor bringing attention to them from walk-in guests. Although dressed the same, upon closer inspection, one can find hints in the form of ties and lapel pins that demonstrate a pride in who and from where each of the 70 people in the group come. These distinguished men and women are part of National Defense University s (NDU) International Fellowship program in Washington, D.C., whose visit to the is consistently a highlight of their trip to Texas. The group of Fellows arriving at the museum. The Fellows consist of senior military officers representing 64 different countries, speaking 59 different languages, and their main purpose is to learn about various social, political, and economic aspects of the country through visiting businesses, government institutions, universities, and cultural sites. To do this, they must first be invited to participate in the year-long Master s program at NDU, either in the National War College (NWC) or the Eisenhower School (ES), by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. During their year in the United States, the Fellows meet with high level military, government, and private industry leaders, and they visit 24 states as part of an extensive Field Studies portion of their program. Because the Fellows are in the United States for one year, NDU hopes that they gain a broader understanding of the United States outside of Washington, D.C., and visiting Texas exposes them to a unique aspects of American culture, economics, and government. Their trip to Texas is focused mainly on energy issues and security in the U.S., and they visit the (Galveston), Johnson Space Center (Houston), Lockheed Martin (Houston), the Sixth Floor Museum (Dallas), and the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo to meet their educational goals. In Houston, the Fellows meet with executives from various petroleum companies, so a visit to the Museum allows them to gain a basic understanding of the oil and gas industry, and put their meetings with executives into context. In all, NDU, the Fellows, and the countless people involved in making their program on site and in the field a success, mutually learn much from their interactions throughout the year. Multiple opportunities to learn about the Fellows cultures through holiday celebrations, international Museum Docent Jordan Ward describes the use of the Heavy Lift Vessel. lunches, and travel, undoubtedly result in a myriad of stories, moments, and laughter shared by the Fellows, and the is glad and proud to consistently be part of the program s ongoing commitment to learning about the social, political, and economic facets of Texas, and how we contribute to the overall culture in the United States. Rig lights up the night David Russell, OEC s Vice Chairman of Operations, recently held an informal meeting with members of the OEC staff and several companies to have a Life Extension Inspection and Discussion for the.
