1 ActionLine...Your Board Meeting Update July 16, 2014 Staff assignments approved Aldine ISD Trustees approved a number of staff assignments during their July 15 meeting, and several new staff members were introduced who were approved at the June 10 meeting and a special called meeting on June 17. Dr. Brandon Carroll was named principal of Rayford Road Intermediate School after serving as an assistant principal at that same school. Dr. Carroll received his bachelor s degree in elementary education from Ball State University in 1999 and his master s degree in 2007 from Texas Southern University. In 2012, he earned his doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Houston. Dr. Carroll is certified as a principal. He began his teaching career in Aldine ISD as a second-grade teacher at Carter Academy. He moved to Cy-Fair ISD in 2002 to teach fifth-grade and a year later, he transferred to Spring Branch ISD to teach second grade. He returned to Aldine ISD in 2004 to teach at Carter Academy and later became the skills specialist at Carter in Dr. Carroll was promoted to his present position as an assistant principal at Rayford Road Intermediate School in Dr. Carroll has 13 years of experience in the field of education and he has spent 11 of those years with Aldine ISD. Anthony Watkins was named principal of Hall Center for Education after serving as an assistant principal at Eisenhower High School. Watkins received his bachelor s degree in physical education in 1991 from McMurry University and in 2008 he received his master s degree in administration from Prairie View A&M University. He is certified as a principal. He began his educational career as a high school English teacher at Brownfield ISD in A year later, he moved to Abilene ISD to assume the role of physical education teacher and coach. In 1994, he transferred to Abilene Cooper High School where he served as a health and physical education teacher, coach and department chair. He joined Aldine ISD in 2002 as a health teacher and head girls basketball coach at Eisenhower High School. He moved into his current position as an assistant principal at Eisenhower High School in Watkins has 23 years of experience in the field of education and he has spent 12 of those years with Aldine ISD. Antonio Toliver was named an assistant principal at MacArthur High School after serving as a networking instructor at that same school. Toliver received his bachelor s degree in business management in 2008 from the University of Phoenix. He earned his master s degree in curriculum and instruction in 2014 from Strayer University. Toliver meets all district requirements for this position. He began his career with Aldine ISD in 2009 as a trade and industrial teacher at MacArthur High School. In 2012, he transferred to Stovall Middle School and returned to MacArthur High School in 2013 to serve as a

2 trade and industrial teacher. Toliver has spent all four of his years in education with Aldine ISD. Patricia King was named program director of special education after serving as an assessment specialist at Goodman Elementary School, Jones Elementary School and MacArthur Ninth Grade School. King received her bachelor s degree in home economics in 1973 from Texas Tech University. In 1990, she earned her master s degree in educational psychology from the University of Houston. She also earned a master s degree in educational leadership from Sam Houston State University in She is certified as a principal and as an educational diagnostician. King began her educational career as a life skills teacher at Hargrave High School in 1989 in Huffman ISD. In 1992, she moved to Humble ISD as a life skills teacher at Humble High School. She was promoted to a diagnostician position in 1996 in Humble ISD. In 2005, she was named an assessment specialist with Aldine ISD. King has 25 years of experience in the field of education and she has spent nine of those years with Aldine ISD. Tracy Bailey was named program director of special education after serving as an assessment specialist at MacArthur High School. Bailey received her bachelor s degree in psychology in 1993 from Prairie View A&M University and her master s degree in special education in 2004 from that same university. Bailey is certified as a principal and educational diagnostician. She began her career as a special education teacher in 1997 with Aldine ISD. In 2005, she moved to her current position as an educational diagnostician at MacArthur High School. Bailey has spent all 17 of her years in education with Aldine ISD. Robert Thomas was named program director of career and business partnerships after serving as an aviation technology teacher at Eisenhower High School. Thomas received his bachelor s degree in industrial education in 1984 from Prairie View A&M University and his master s degree in 1990 in physical education from that same university. He is certified for this position. He began his educational career in 1991 as a technology education teacher at MacArthur High School. In 1998, he was named program director for business and education partnerships. He transferred to his current position as an aviation technology teacher at Eisenhower High School in Thomas has spent all 23 years of his career in education with Aldine ISD. Catalina Lugo was named multilingual program specialist after serving as a fourthgrade teacher at Carroll Elementary School. Lugo received her bachelor s degree in English as a Foreign Language in Mexico in 1984 and her master s degree in English as a Foreign Language in 1990 in Mexico. In 1998, she earned a master s degree in teaching English to speakers of other languages at Florida International University. She is certified for this position. She began her career in education in the United States in 2002 in Aldine ISD as a pre-kindergarten teacher at Vines EC/Pre-K Center. She transferred to Goodman Elementary School in 2006 to teacher fourth-grade. In 2008, she transferred to Calvert Elementary School where she also taught fourth-grade. She returned to Goodman Elementary in 2009 to teach fourth-grade and in 2010 she was named the bilingual skills specialist at Odom Elementary School. In 2013, she moved to her current position as a fourth-grade teacher at Carroll Elementary. Lugo has spent all 12 of her years in education with Aldine ISD. Shanaya Anderson was named coordinator for on-line learning-virtual schools after serving as a virtual school teacher at Nimitz Ninth Grade School. Anderson received her

3 bachelor s degree in accounting in 2004 from the University of Houston-Downtown. In 2008, she earned her master s degree in business administration from the University of Houston-Victoria. She also received a master s degree in educational leadership from Lamar University in She is certified for this position. She began her career in education in 2006 as a fifth-grade teacher at Reed Academy. In 2012, she moved into her current position as a virtual school teacher at Nimitz Ninth Grade School. Anderson has spent all eight of her years in education with Aldine ISD. Shirley Seals was named principal of Shotwell Middle School after serving as an assistant principal at Wilson Intermediate School. Seals received her bachelor s degree in education in 1975 from Prairie View A&M University and her master s degree in reading in 1980 from that same university. She is certified as a principal. She began her career in education in 1975 as a sixth-grade social studies teacher with Jasper ISD. In 1977, she moved to Bellville ISD to teach reading at O Bryant Elementary School. She joined Aldine ISD in 1980 to teach language arts and social studies at Drew Academy. She moved into her current position as an assistant principal at Wilson Intermediate School in Seals has 39 years of experience in the field of education and she has spent 34 of those years with Aldine ISD. Michelle Burke was named principal at Keeble EC/Pre-K Center after serving as an assistant principal at Garcia-Leza EC/Pre-K Center. Burke received her bachelor s degree in interdisciplinary studies with a minor in psychology in 2002 from the University of Houston-Downtown. She earned her master s degree in instructional leadership from Sam Houston State University in She is certified as a principal. She began her career in education with Aldine ISD in 2002 as a pre-kindergarten Montessori teacher at Keeble EC/Pre-K Center. She was named director of operations at Cathedral House Montessori School in 2008 and returned to Aldine ISD a year later. She was promoted to her current position as an assistant principal at Garcia-Leza EC/Pre-K Center in Burke has 12 years of experience in the field of education and she has spent 11 of those years with Aldine ISD. Dr. Scott Crawford was named assistant principal at Eisenhower High School after serving as athletic programs administrator with Houston ISD. Dr. Crawford received his bachelor s degree in health and human performance in 1995 from Texas Southern University. In 1998, he earned his master s degree in counseling from Prairie View A&M University. He also earned a master s degree in educational administration in 2011 from Lamar University. He earned his doctorate in counseling in 2007 from Texas Southern University. Dr. Crawford meets all district requirements for this position. He began his educational career as a physical education teacher in 1995 at Aldine Middle School. In 1998, he was named a special education counselor with Aldine ISD. He moved to his current position of athletics program administrator with Houston ISD. Dr. Crawford has 19 years of experience in the field of education and he has spent 13 of those years with Aldine ISD. Julie Porter was named assistant principal at Plummer Middle School after serving as a litigation paralegal at Liskow & Lewis. Porter received her bachelor s degree in 1992 from the Dominican College of San Rafael. In 1999, she earned her master s degree in humanities from California State University at Dominguez Hills. She is certified as a principal. She began her career in education in 2000 as a history teacher at The Canterbury Episcopal School in DeSoto. In 2004, she was named principal and history

4 teacher at Allen Academy in College Station and moved to The Fay School in Houston in She became the principal of Duchesne Academy for grades 5-8 in Since 2012, she has been a litigation paralegal with Liskow & Lewis in Houston. Porter has 12 years of experience in the field of education. Robin Willis was named assistant principal at Stovall Middle School after serving as an assessment and data specialist at that same school. Willis received her bachelor s degree in business administration in 1999 from Jarvis Christian College. In 2003, she earned her master s degree in educational administration from Prairie View A&M University. She is certified as a principal. She began her educational career in 2000 as a classroom teacher at Carroll Elementary School. In 2005, she became the instructional specialist at the same school. In 2007, she assumed the role of academic, assessment and data specialist at Carroll Elementary. Since 2013, she has served in the same capacity at Stovall Middle School. Willis has spent all 14 of her years in education with Aldine ISD.

5 Grants announced Stacey Smith, program director of resource development, announced three grants during the July 15 Board meeting. Kristin Craft, the principal of MacArthur High School, received a $4,426 grant from the East Aldine District to purchase three flat screen TVs that will be placed in key areas of the school where students, parents, and community members gather. A multi-media process will be developed by teachers and students to share stories, highlight academic and extra curricular accomplishments and campus news that impacts MacArthur High School and the MacArthur community. Xang Chareunsab, the assistant cross country coach at MacArthur High School, secured a $15,000 grant from the East Aldine Management District to fund the school s Summer Running and Fitness Program and provide funding for the cross country team to travel to Wisconsin in September to compete in the Midwest Invitational Cross Country Meet. The program offers a positive and healthy opportunity during the summer for students in the Aldine community. Over the past six years, the program has grown to more than 80 students. They begin running at 7 a.m. Monday through Friday. MacArthur students who continue to participate in the school s cross country team will travel to Wisconsin in September to participate in the Midwest Invitational Cross Country Meet. Head cross country coach Kelly Silha and his family sponsor eight students, while the grant helps to cover the cost of transportation, lodging and meals for the remainder of the team. Also on hand during the July 15 Board meeting were MacArthur High principal Dr. Kristin Craft, Joey Silha, who is serving as an intern this summer and assisting with the summer program, and members of the school s cross country team. Debera Thomas, principal of Kujawa Elementary School, secured an $189,522 grant from the Texas Education Agency through a partnership with the Harris County Department of Education to fund the school s 21 st Century Community Learning Community program. The program will provide high-quality extended learning opportunities outside of the regular school day to assist Kujawa students in attaing quality academic instruction and enrichment opportunities.

6 Superintendent s contract extended During the July 15 Board meeting, Trustees unanimously approved extending Superintendent Dr. Wanda Bamberg s contract. Program presented During the July 15 Board meeting, the program was presented by Richard Delgado, the district s director of athletics. Delgado provided a Power Point presentation on his department, highlighting the athletic achievement AISD female and male athletes attained during the school year at the high school and middle school level. He also shared academic data on how well AISD athletes performed on the STAAR test.
