The OCS Advisory Board donated funds to OEC for its renovation campaign. Presenting the check to Dave Welch, OEC Chairman, right is E. J. Louviere, Vice President, Land for Stone Energy. Vision 2016 Campaign supports five major initiatives Offshore Energy Center s Vision 2016 campaign was initiated in 2006 to raise funds for five major initiatives: renovation and maintenance of the Ocean Star; the launch of the Mobile Offshore Learning Unit (MOLU); expansion of the Knowledge Box program (Grades 6-12); introduction of the Playing with Petroleum Kit (Grades K-5); and the expansion of the PE 3 : Expanding Energy Education teacher guide and workshop program for K-12. As we begin 2009, these projects are well under way but the need for education programs about the offshore energy industry has never been greater. Vision 2016 offers an outstanding array of integrated educational outreach programming to answer the need. If you are interested in helping with any of these endeavors, please contact Peggy Cole at or oecdevelopment@aol.com. Mobile Offshore Learning Unit (MOLU) sponsorships are available at $200,000 each, payable in five annual installments of $40,000. The MOLU Traveling Exhibit consists of six self-contained components with 24 curriculum-based, hands-on learning activities about offshore energy topics. The content of each component is aligned to state (TEKS) and national education standards. The six exhibits are easily transported via a truck and trailer to schools for exhibition in the school s gymnasium or common area. PLEASE NOTE: Sponsorships of only $1,500 will allow the MOLU to visit one school in the Houston area for a day-long program. Each visit accommodates up to 192 students. Knowledge Box sponsorships are $100,000 each, payable in five annual installments of $20,000. 3 OEC, Foundation for Energy Education form partnership OEC and the Foundation for Energy Education, an affiliate of Texas Alliance of Energy Producers, recently formed a partnership to expand energy education for Texas students. The partnership initially will focus on expanding OEC s Mobile Offshore Learning Unit (MOLU) across Texas and increase participation of elementary and secondary school teachers in OEC s Project E 3 : Expanding Energy Education workshops. We are pleased to be working with the Offshore Energy Center on this vital effort, said Pat French, the Foundation s president. Given the growing importance of energy in people s daily lives, we believe it is critical to provide today s children with this essential knowledge in a fun and easy-tounderstand manner. These initiatives are an important complement to the Foundation s other educational activities. The Foundation for Energy Education is a non-profit affiliate of the Texas Alliance of Energy Producers, the nation s largest statewide association of independent oil and gas producers. The Foundation was established to inform and educate the public and policymakers on a wide range of energy issues in addition to its mission of bringing energy education to classrooms across Texas in partnership with OEC. The Foundation is mounting a long-term public education media campaign, which includes radio and newspaper advertising. The media campaign is a major effort to build public awareness of the oil and gas industry s role in the state economy and in the citizen s daily lives. The education campaigns will also measure changing public perceptions of the industry. About 1,200 students have been through the MOLU so far during the 2008/2009 school year. Teachers have commented on how well organized the program is as students fill their MOLU Pass, said Amber Meuth, Program Manager, MOLU. The teachers also comment on the fact that the students are totally engaged the entire time they are involved with the project. One student told me that the MOLU was the best thing that has ever come to his school, Amber said. For information on reserving the MOLU, please contact Amber Meuth, Program Manager, MOLU, at or oecmolu@aol.com, or OEC Education Director Doris Tomas at or oeceducation@aol.com. Vision 2016 Campaign, continued from page2 classroom exhibit showcasing fossil fuels, earth science and engineering through interactive technology, hands-on activities, posters, and multimedia presentations. Curriculum in the Knowledge Box is correlated to state science standards. Playing with Petroleum sponsorships are also $100,000 each, payable in five annual installments of $20,000. Designed for students in grades K-5, the Playing with Petroleum Kit is a free traveling classroom exhibit containing books, hands-on activities, models, and interactive technology showcasing fossil fuels and earth science. Curriculum in the Kit is correlated to state science standards. Due to the tremendous success of our teacher workshop programs, the need is greatest for the Playing with Petroleum Kits. We currently have a waiting list of teachers who would like to use the program in their classrooms. Project E 3 Educators Guide sponsorships are $25,000 each. Project E 3 : Expanding Energy Education is an interdisciplinary, K-12 grades energy education program. With initial funding for development from the American Association of Drilling Engineers, this curriculum offers exciting new teaching ideas about hydrocarbon-based energy for use in science, math, social studies, language arts, art, physical education, and music classes. The addition of 26 activities is currently under development. $3,043,950 has been pledged for the renovation of the Ocean Star Museum. Refurbishment and updating of the exhibits will be included, funding permitting. Playing With Petroleum Kit THE STAR, First Quarter

8 Ocean Star News Ocean Star now operating, repairs and renovation progressing As reported in the last newsletter, power was finally restored to the Ocean Star in January. Since then a safety audit was performed by Shell and Hess employees, Rowan Companies began Phase I of the renovation work on the pipe deck as part of its in-kind donation, and a temporary gift shop, donated by Porta-Kamp International, shop was erected in early March with a permanent gift shop expected to be installed on the pier in May or June. Following several false starts restoring power to the rig, there are still problems with the telephone service. New telecommunications equipment was installed on the rig during the repair process following the hurricane, however, in early March telephone service had not been restored due to issues possibly related to water damage of underground cables and wiring belonging to the telephone company in Galveston. A safety audit of the rig and museum was conducted by Mando Cantu and Mike Walker, Wells HSE Supervisors for Shell E&P, and Greg Moyer, EHS Technician for Hess Corp. The primary focus of the safety audit was to identify and assess any safety issues as they relate to public access and safety. The report indicated that the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig Museum was observed being maintained and operating in a safe manner with primary focus on public access and safety. A temporary gift shop building was installed in early March adjacent to the older gift shop, which was demolished and removed by Pride International. Bob Warren, vice president industry relations with Pride International was instrumental in securing Pride s role in the demolition of the gift shop on behalf of the OEC. A new gift shop, being built by Porta- Kamp International, is under construction and is expected to be delivered to the site in May or June. Pride International assisted in negotiating the Continued on page 9 Out with the old. Workers from Pride International demolished and removed the old gift shop that was destroyed by Hurricane Ike. 8

9 Ocean Star News Porta-Kamp, which is building the new gift shop, supplied the Ocean Star with a temporary building until the new one can be delivered and installed. Rowan Companies began removing and welding in new steel in several areas of the Ocean Star's Texas deck. Rowan also will stabilize the rig's substructure. Operating, repair & renovation, continued from page8 purchase of the gift shop building and will assist in erecting it when it is delivered. There were seven Pride International employees who successfully disassembled the damaged Ocean Star Museum Welcome Center in Galveston March 6-8 without incident or injury. They did an exceptional job while emphasizing safety, teamwork, and took great care not to lose any debris over the side into the bay. Bob Warren was on site during the demolition and stated, It was a massive job and represented a giant step forward for the museum which all of our companies support. Thanks go to Pride employees Ronnie Vickers, Howard Griffith, Bill Reardon, Steve Masone, Richard Dunn, Austin Hale, and David Stringfellow. The aquarium at the entrance to the Ocean Star has been cleaned and refilled with new salt water, and several fish have been added. More fish will be added as the new fish become acclimated to the aquarium environment. Rowan Companies began their part of the renovation in March, including removing and replacing handrails on the pipe deck as well as removing and welding in new steel in several areas of the Texas deck. Rowan will also stabilize the derrick s substructure and replace and refurbish steel around the base of the derrick. Assisting with Phase I of the renovation were Northwinds Abatement, Inc., M & M Industrial Services, Inc., and Brand Scaffold Services, LLC. Other companies are also upgrading equipment and exhibits, including Schlumberger and ConocoPhillips. See the Fourth Quarter 2008 The Star (p7) for more details on the renovation. Ocean Star and OEC is happy to welcome back the normal complement of Ocean Star employees, including Gift Shop Manager Margi Petersen, Assistant Gift Shop Manager Bessie Ramirez, Site Manager Ed Henkel, Programs Manager Trina Claire and, of course, Lisa Lisinicchia, Ocean Star Operations Director. These employees were scattered far and wide following Hurricane Ike, from Port Arthur to Boerne to Fairfield, and we are THE STAR, First Quarter
