5 APWA Involvement Karen Kase joined the American Public Works Association in January From the beginning, Karen became involved with the Fox Valley Branch. At her very first meeting, she not only expressed interest in becoming involved with a committee, she was the presenter as well. Starting in 2013, Karen became an integral part of the Fox Valley Branch by becoming the Scholarship Committee Co-Chair. She embraced the APWA mission to promote professional excellence; understanding of and competency and credibility in public works. Starting in January, the chairs meet and publish the Scholarship Application for the year. In a typical year, twenty to thirty applications are received and must be reviewed by the chairs for validity. Then, the applications are delivered to the committee members for evaluations. Unique to the Fox Valley Branch, the committee selects the top candidates to interview in May and scholarship awards are made at the luncheon in June. Karen's enthusiasm for introducing students to the public works community was demonstrated at her first scholarship award luncheon. She prepared table tents for the students with their names, schools, and areas of interest. She has always focused on assisting the students with their educational and career paths. During the summer, Karen has mentored scholarship recipients as interns at Hampton, Lenzini, and Renwick. Karen's Technical Presentations Natural Area Management Illinois Association of Parks Departments and Illinois Parks and Recreation Association Annual Conference, January 2012 HLR Client Seminars, February 2012 IAFSM Annual Conference, March 2012 FVB presentation, April 2012 APWA presentation, October 2012 ACEC Environmental Committee, December 2012 Erosion Control BMPs APWA presentation October 2012 Green Infrastructure Maintenance APWA presentation May 2013 After her first presentation to the Fox Valley Branch in April of 2012, Karen has continued to present at other events. She continually strives to inform the public works and general community about our environment. Her presentations are informative and educational. Her passion for preserving wetlands naturally and effectively are noted as she speaks. Her knowledge on local fauna is outstanding and very beneficial for APWA members. 6 Professional Career Karen is a 2005 graduate with a Bachelor's of Science in Ecology and Environmental Biology from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. She started her career with Down to Earth Environmental, Inc. upon graduation as a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC). Her training at Down to Earth included Environmental Inspector Certification, Wetland Delineation Certification, wetland plant identification and Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP). In 2011, Karen joined Hampton, Lenzini, and Renwick, Inc. She is skilled in environmental inspection to ensure compliance with Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) and County soil erosion and sediment control requirements. She has completed Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs) on many projects, and evaluated various sites for stormwater concerns, including special considerations for watershed quality. In 2013, Karen received her Master of Science in Natural Resources and Environmental Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign. Karen has experience with conducting wetland delineations, soil sampling, floristic quality assessments, and compilation of wetland data sheets and delineation reports. She has assisted with wetland permitting on a local, state, and federal level and has been involved with wetland mitigation bank design and planning. Karen has evaluated and inventoried potential natural resources for several sites including the presence of threatened and endangered species. She has designed, installed, and monitored compensatory mitigation sites. Karen is knowledgeable with identifying invasive species and the maintenance techniques most efficient for eradication including mowing, cutting, herbiciding, and controlled burning practices. Karen has varied experience with environmental assessments, including Phase I and Phase II soil sampling and analysis. She is also familiar with the IEPA Clean Construction and Demolition Debris (CCDD) regulations and permitting. Personal Life Karen's love of the environment translates directly to her personal life. She can regularly be found spending her free time outdoors. She enjoys boating along the Fox River, camping, and listening to some great music. Her favorite vacations are those spent with family at her family cabin in Canada where she enjoys fishing and relaxing outdoors.

Vice President - Engineering Wills Burke Kelsey Associates,Ltd. 116 West Main Street, Suite 201 St. Charles, Illinois RE: Ms. Karen Kase Nomination for the Young Leader Award Dear Sirs/Madams: It is my pleasure to recommend the nomination of Karen Kase for your consideration as recipient of the young leader award. Karen is a co-chairperson of the Fox Valley Branch's scholarship committee. This last APWA Chapter Expo, I was fortunate enough to co-present an education session with Karen about a project we worked together on in Elgin. She was very engaging with the audience, knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with. Karen's ability and eagerness to act at the branch level by serving on a committee and willingness to contribute toward the Chapter Expo has shown she has great potential for future growth within the association. It is my opinion through working with Karen on a professional level and throughout APWA events, that she personifies the purpose of the young leader award. Karen will continue to flourish in her career and as an APWA member. I look forward to continuing to work with Karen as she lives up to her potential. Sincerely, Michael L.
